Anyone up for a new Chieftan SG?

I would like to join in - the fifth spot on team B if still available - or put me on the waiting list in case a third team develops.

Thanks!:)

Hi mcdan! Glad to see your name here. It will be good to be on Team B with you.

Actually, for what it is worth, I feel much more comfortable having 5 on a team than 4. There will more team mates to talk things over with, and if you should have to be away sometime and can't take your turn, there will be others who can.

Hey infoman, DON'T download the patch. We can have one team be the team of people that has the patch and the other doesn't. I tried to install the patch and then my Civ 3 wouldn't run anymore so I had to uninstall it and reinstall it again to get it to work. So unless there is a way to play the game once its been saved on a "patched" game, I think we should have one team be non-patched and then the other can use the patch.

T-hawk, I thought it would be nice to play warlord for a change. :) and I really, really love the idea about different groups playing the same game.

No, both games will be using the 1.29f patch. The original version of the game is full of bugs and exploits that have since been removed. If one team is using 1.07f and another using 1.29f, the results will NOT be comparable. You shouldn't have any problems running the patch unless you are using a pirated copy of Civ3 (no sympathy in that case) or have a Macintosh computer, for which the 1.29f patch has not be released yet. If you have a Mac, I'm sorry but we can't include you in this event. Swapping between patches is way too much of a hassel and I'm not going to run an event that uses an outdated version of the game. If you're having problems getting the patch to work, try looking at the technical support info on this site.

On a more positive note, I generated a map and tweaked it a bit in the editor to ensure a better overall game. The conditions are English civ, standard-sized map, Warlord difficulty, 7 other AI civs, continent landmass, climate randomized, and barbarians set to restless. The map has been designed so that peaceful and warmongering games should be equally viable; definitely not like the RBD23 map! So in other words, I've got the game set up and we can start as soon as all players are ready. :D

I agree wholeheartedly!

Sounds good! :D

Glad to have you aboard. At least 3 of our team is from the great state of Georgia. Maybe we could revolt and change the name of our civ the Georgians and change the name of our leader to Oglethorpe. Ha, Ha.

Padma,
I will make sure I download the patch tonight and install it.

Which benevolent teacher is going to advise team #2?

Everything sounds good so far.

"Sire! The peasants are revolting!"

"Yeah, I feel the same way about 'em."

I am sure Sullla and I (and T-Hawk, if he desires) can work it out. ;)

Actually, I'd love it if a couple more people joined so we could make 3 teams. :D

I am from Valdosta. Any farter south and you are in florida for everyone else.

I will be glad when we get started.

I hope our team is ready to raise the jolly roger and pillage.

Thanks for the welcome. Ready to play!

This is incredible: 4 of us in this new game from Georgia!

Shows that Civ3 attracts the best folks!

No one has posted anything in the last 12 hours here, so I thought I would move ahead with this idea before people lose interest and it stall out. Here are the teams:

Team A
D-Tox
ZeekLTK
archer_007
Wetterlind
Zarth
Advisor: Sullla (Me)

Team B
VinCaiden
BoBtheBUILDER
Infoman
stwils
mcdan
Advisor: Padma

Game Specifications
English Civ (Commercial and Expansionist)
Warlord Difficulty
7 AI opponents
Standard-sized Map
70% water Continents landmass
Random Climate
Restless Barbarians
Default Rules, but AI Respawn and Culturally-Linked Starting Positions are Off

Rules
- The first player plays 20 turns, after that all players play 10-turn rounds.
- 24 hours to post an "I got it" message then 48 hours to play the game. If you need to drop from the game or will be away, please let the other people on your team know so they can work around it.
- No worker automations; you will do better without them anyway! :D Exception can be made for pollution cleanup in the end game.
- No long goto orders, since the next player will have no idea where the unit is going.
- No Right of Passage (ROP) abuses, like signing one to attack another civ. That's off the table.
- No signing deals with the intention of not honoring them (example: get 4 techs for 100gpt then declare war to avoid paying it)
- If you sign a peace treaty for 20 turns, it must be honored. No stabbing AI civs in the back.
- "Winning" is based losely on score; this isn't the kind of competition where one group really wins or loses, but we will determine it by score nonetheless. No "sandbagging" on a victory though just to get more points; this is not a competition to see who can milk score better. No keeping one AI city alive to delay conquest victory, intentionally not launching the spaceship, etc.
- No reading the other team(s)'s thread! Period. General announcements go in THIS thread that everyone can read. When the game is finished, the advisor will post a "game complete" message in this thread.

If that seems like a lot of rules, don't worry because with luck most of them will never come up. :) These are just some baseline conditions to prevent abuses where the AI is not programmed to deal with certain situations. Padma and I will be advising the teams, offering light criticism of player actions ("Your cities are too spaced out", "More military might be a good idea", "Try trading your excess luxuries to the AI civs"). We are NOT playing the game ourselves though, so critiques that offer detailed advice ("You can micromanage London to get an extra shield without decreasing food", "That settler should go in X spot on the map to get maximum benefit", "Trade Pottery to the Spanish for Ceremonial Burial and then trade that to the Ottomans for Masonry") are not going to take place. After all, it's not me versus Padma; you guys are going to be playing!

I'll create the game threads tomorrow morning and we'll begin as soon as the first players in the rotation are ready. Signups will be closing TONIGHT at midnight EST; anyone out there can still sign up until that time. If we get 2 more people, I will reshuffle the lineup and create 3 teams of 4, with the third team likely being advised by T-Hawk, who expressed interest in the idea. (Still up for it T-Hawk? ;)) I was thinking of calling this game SUL5 since I don't think Padma has a numbered series of succession games, but if someone has a better name I'm open to suggestions. For tonight though, I'll leave you will this image of the starting position:
