Apocalypto

I vote for Academy as well. And settle Fish/Ivory. Not too sure about tech (can't look at the save right now), but sailing shouldn't be delayed too long. Will try to comment more tonight.

I think I'd tech Math right now, to open up the way to both currency and calendar. Putting some turns into alpha/PH would be good as well, but I'd only do that when an AI has alpha available for trade.
Fishing/Sailing can wait until we're 1t from settling the fish/ivory city

I will play tonight but feel free to give more feedback, especially those that have not chimed in yet, particularly from down under. Maths sounds fine. Don't normally self tech it but I can see some value here with this game and opens a calendar or currency patch. I'll put 1 turn of binary into Alpha as we wait or the GS to pop next turn.

However, I don't really see much value in settling the fish city now. We already have the ivory.

Thanks for asking :) ... 'Down under' votes for Ivory-Fish (I still think it's a nice site) and Academy too. Not too fussed on tech' path (personally I'd lean to Alphabet, but Maths is fine).

I like Math for either Currency or Calendar to follow. Build the Academy. For fish we want fishing (duh) and sailing which ties in with Calendar nicely. Plus we get near construction for our UB.

I'll get to this tomorrow.

Academy, Fish/Ivory and I'll shoot for Maths at present. Fishing can still be delayed for a bit as it will be some time before we can actually work it. We'll likely tech Fishing in 1t by that point or maybe even trade for it, who knows.

FR. There are some tools you can use. A little piece of freeware called CCleaner will help remove all hidden temp files, clear browser cache etc. It's pretty handy. Also, MS Sysinternals has a tool called processmonitor. This is also free. Using this tool, you can see exactly what files and registry keys are being denied access when you try and play the game. If you are interested, let me know and I will PM instructions to you.

Spoiler :
I'd appreciate it, thanks, W! I have actually downloaded the CCleaner, but evidently wasn't able to use it effectively.

Ok...10 turns played.

Summary:

1) Finished Maths/Fish/Sailing...running binary on Currency. We have trade routes with Monty

Capac is going Calendar. One reason I did not go Calendar at present is that I realized that we would not be able to improve those resources. Anyway, we can probably trade with Capac later. Currency is good, but we do need happies bad. Also, no one has freakin' alpha yet. Let's keep an eye on Capac to see if he goes Alpha next. We may just have to go for it.

2) Started TGL in Laka. It has hammer OF from Library and Worker, so a little over 1/3 complete. We can stagnate Laka next turn by switching food tiles to 1f2h tiles to speed things up or keep growing and whipping stuff. Maybe a Barracks. Note that with Marble tile it is impossible to setup 2 pops with units.

3) Granary in Mayapan is at 1t. However, I'm holding off on completing it until the food bar hits the half-way mark at 14F. Keep an eye on this as you should be able to manage hitting 14 food by switching a scientist off and on. This should be a good city to whip units and maybe get another GS at some point later. I'm building a wb now for the new city or to scout - plenty of time to get it over there.

4) Settler is started in Uxmal. Grow city 2 more pops or and finish it or 3 and whip it

5) Mutal could whip a barracks next turn into a settler. City will need to stagnate for a bit.

6) We might want to get at least a chariot out as well in case an axe pops his head out or get several out and take those barb cities.

EDIT: That FP north of Mutal should have been cottaged.

Of course, these jokers come asking for help with their little war. I decline. I wouldn't have minded a fake war on Monty's side to boost diplo, but Capac likes SB so I don't want to risk it. We will need to trade with him later.

We could trade away our horses to SB for copper and fur. Above all gives an extra happy, and we could make some axes for the barb cities. Unfortunately rice/gold won't work with Monty.

I'm wondering why the plains at Uxmal are farmed already, why the grass still isn't. I'd also work the wheat in Chicken Itza instead of the farmed plain. Especially with fur available. It can finish library and grow in 4 turns, likely a settler next from here would be good. And maybe we should explore that land north of the fish site. But good progress overall (don't mean to sound negative...).

Oh and why can't we set up 2 pop whip with units in marble city? A holkan is 35 hammers, base prod is 3, so after 1 turn with 32 hammers left to go it'd be a nice 2-pop whip, right?

Plains was farmed before Uxmal popped borders (you can always assume there is a reason I would not go for the higher food option if available). I switched Itza to plains farm from a switching out a cottage to Mutal from the new pop growth there - for the hammer and to to slow growth in Itza. I admit that I did not see the resource trade as the ability to trade them just opened up.

I think the max hammers you put into a unit for a 2 pop has to consider the base hammers. You can try it though, but I doubt it will work.

Copper and Fur would be nice. A couple of Axes would take that 1 barb city easily.

That's precisely why I got like "huh?"... I hadn't realized the borders just popped. And as said, I didn't mean to sound negative. ;)

I think I'm up. I'll have a few hours right now before going away for the weekend, I hope you won't mind I play a couple of turns without posting more of a plan than the few things I mentioned yesterday. I guess the overall idea for now is pretty straightforward anyway. Techwise I won't go further than currency (if I even get that) to not compromise anything.

Okay, played till currency was in.

First made this deal:

Civ4ScreenShot0780.jpg

And founded fish city which started on a monument. Decided to work the jumbos as that way the monument would be built in 8 turns naturally, whereas the whip would take 11 turns. This way we can work the fish 3 turns earlier eventually.

Fiddle with Lakamha to set up 2-pop whips of axes. Do that twice for good overflow to the GLib. As I hand it over we have 3 turns left on GLib working 3 1f2h tiles at size 3 starving slowly. Yet another whip could've been set up, but obviously whip anger is rather high so went for this option for the last hammers on GLib.

The capital also whips an axe for 2 pop, which is used to finish the rax and overflow into worker to let whip anger cool off. The time where we can start mining and chopping approaches. ;)

Mayapan got its granary at 14 food and is nearly finished with the WB it already had queued. I guess it's for fish city? Or for scouting. Fish city itself is also building a WB, either for its fish or to scout the land north of it.

Chicken Pizza finished library and continued settler which is just whipped and is heading NE. Right now in the capital.

Uxmal has grown to 4 and resumed work on settler. Next turn it can be 2-pop whipped.

Both these settlers can settle the wide open in the north east. That has some urgence, as Capac settled there as well.

You might appreciate in the picture the units heading towards Hurrian. It's defended by 3 warriors, with a fourth on guard just next to it. Should be ours next set. A road is nearly built towards the city (worker is next to it guarded by axe).

Finally the tech screen. All 3 AIs got alphabet, HC was the first 3 turns ago. He also had the nerve to demand aesthetics which I had to decline.

Civ4ScreenShot0790.jpg

We can get everything on the table if we throw in currency too. However, we might want to get PH quickly so we can also trade for monarchy that SB and HC both have. We could tech it in 1 turn.

Christianity and taoism where both FIADL during the set.

hmm we probably need to trade for the alpha with how the situation turned out.

I would trade math for the lesser techs with SB - especially the PH and use aesth/curr for IW/monarchy/calendar...everything we basically need ;-)

we could delay the massive trades for IW/monarchy/calendar for few turns (we need them 200 AD), but should closely follow if some AI starts to tech any of them...

how is the war going? :-)

after monarchy big prio is to grow capital into cottages imo.

I'm up, right? I'll post a plan tonight and play tomorrow night.

Well, technically we don't really need alpha at present unless trying to open up a bulb. A couple of turns into Calendar and we may be able to trade Aesths for it and try to hold on to currency monopoly. Might trade Currency to Capac later for MC.

oops I meant to write "we don't need alpha" and instead it turned out something else :-D

The plan:
Set length: Play until 200AD (I'm assuming we can't start chopping until that date?)
Cities:
Mutal: worker > settler (will put a turn into a market/unit to grow when whip anger allows)
Lakamha: TGL > worker (when waiting for whip anger to wear off) / unit/rax for growing
Chichen Itze > Rax > Axe
Uxmal: Settler > finish Rax
Mayapan: WB > LH (or another worker?)
Calakmul: WB > Gran > LH

Get workers into place to connect happies at 200AD
Take Barb city

Tech:
Well, this is the hard part, because a lot depends on what we want to trade for.
Here's what I'd do in a solo game
Trade Math for Mono+Priest with SB, then wait a bunch of turns, putting research into calendar, then try to trade Aest for Monarchy, Calendar and IW.
That'd leave us with a monopoly on Currency, and the AI with Construction and Alpha, which I'd try for in the next round, when MC is on the table as well.

If we go that route, that leaves the question what we'll tech after the first big round. Do we go for the Artist at Music? CoL?

what is rax?

sounds good.

For techs. If SB will trade PH and Mono for Maths and gold, take it. He will get it soon anyway. If he's already teching it, get 1 tech and gold. I don't think Monarchy is that urgent. I'd raise the slider a bit and puta couple of turns into Calendar and try to trade Aesths for it. Try to get IW too.

I'd like to shoot for Music, but we should try to set up a Currency for MC trade with HC when he has it.

what are the WBs for?
