April 10th: Almost died.

Man, full recovery after something like this?
That warrants to be called a God-given miracle.

Glad you made it and best wishes.

Glad you're doing okay, John!

I guess the closest I've been to a fatal head on car crash was riding with my friend's mom, and having another car switch over into her lane coming right at us. He woke up and veered back into his own lane at the last second, though.

Last summer I had an SUV clip the back of my bike as I was coming home from work. I went flying, but the only injuries I ended up getting was a dislocated shoulder from landing on my elbows (which were covering my head), a really sore pelvis, and lots of scrapes and bruises.

A friend of mine got t-boned by a semi-truck going about 40 mph (he didn't see it coming, so went through a stop sign), his car flew about 30 feet forward, rolled a few times, split in half, and looked even worse than your wreck (from the photos he showed me), but he got up and walked away from the crash with just minor bruises. It's amazing what a well engineered car can do.

Been in the hospital with a friend when she died, that's about it for that experience.

As to the second half of classical's question. I've never been "near death" as far as I know.

I got hit by a car on my bike & went flying up in the air since I had stupidly wrapped my bike chain around my right handlebar (impairing the force by with I could squeeze the brake to the front wheel. I hit the hood of the car hard, rolled off & landed with a thud onto the concrete. I managed to pick myself & get out of the street where I lay on the sidewalk & gaukers asked me stupid questions. My whole back was a one big clethed muscle, I was worried it was broken. I turned out ok though, with just a few slipped discs (which may cause me much pain in old age :scared: ) and 8 or 10 stitches on my side where I hit the concrete.

Somewhat ironically perhaps I was on my way to a job interview (applicable in hand... er pocket) for the now defunct company kozmo.com.

Have any of you been in a similar near death-type situation?

No, fortunately!

Have any of you been present when somebody died and did it bother you, at all?

Not violent deaths, and I imagine that it would.

EDIT: For the record, the doctors expect me to make a full recovery. No disabilities.[/QUOTE]

Glad to hear that. Some of my friends suffered nasty accidents, but they too escaped permanent damage. You'll still need lots of patience still for a few months, though!
As for accidents, they're just that, accidents. Live must go on afterwards. It can happen to anyone, and you couldn't help about the other driver. It's a good thing, and to your credit, that you didn't came out of it angry at her.

Glad to hear you're ok. I've never had a near death experience where I was injured, but I did walk away from a near death experience a little over a year ago. It has made me appreciate each day since then far more than I would have.

I forgot to answer the questions - such a risky thing never happened for me, and also, I haven't witnessed anyone dying, fortunately. Also, nobody in the part of my family that I know died while I was alive (with the exception of a distant aunt whom I met once and my great-grandmother when I was 5), and no friends of mine died either (but then again I'm young so thankfully that's not very common...).

The closest I got to a life and death situation were the following events:
- my hostel room, while I was in Belgrade, Serbia, caught fire in the middle of the night, and I was the only person inside. Luckily I made it with out only 2 light burns on my hands. Could have died both from the fire, as it was the bed in which I used to sleep that burned (I miraculously decided to sleep in a different one that night, as my roommates left and they freed up) and from the heavy smoke inside (I felt very sick for a few hours because of the smoke, but luckily nothing serious happened to me).
- was in a bus accident a few years ago - a guy with a fairly large truck couldn't brake, thanks to some mechanical malfunction, and thus he crashed into a smaller car in front of him, which in turn crashed into the next one, etc. They were all lined up at a traffic light, so in the end it was an accident involving 4 cars and the bus I was in. A man in the bus was seriously injured, as he was sitting in the back, where one of the cars crashed, but everyone else was fine.
- while I was on a trip in the Danube Delta, I fell "into" the Danube from quite far above (I now estimate there were at least 20 meters). I rolled down on some rocks though, so it was not a free fall (or else I wouldn't be telling the story) and ended up only a few centimeters away from the river. I could have died while rolling on the sharp rocks, by drowning as I couldn't swim at the time (had I actually fallen into the river as opposed to right next to it), or similarly from hypothermia as the water was ice cold.

So I was pretty lucky, but never had something of the magnitude of what you described happen to me. :D

Good to see you back. One thing about the internet is that when someone does unexpectedly die, it's unlikely anyone will be informed. Someone I knew on another forum died after being hit by a car going to the end of year ball - he was only in his teens.

April 10th isn't exactly my favourite day of the day, after my dad passed away 7 years ago out of the blue. It's such a cliche and you probably feel the same way, but you just never expect it to happen to you, and especially on a day that seems totally normal. Having been in a minor car accident before, it's easy to think how things could be so much different - if you just hadn't gone out, if you'd set off 30 seconds earlier etc.

So a few events shook up my idea of life, but I'm always grateful for what I have because I know things could be far, far worse. Life is pretty scary at times. Glad to see you're on the mend.

As for near death experiences, I went down some rapids backwards in a kayak. We'd been told that 2 children had died in a nearby cave. In hindsight, although it was scary (I was 10), it was only a near death experience in the sense that I thought it was at the time. Since then I don't like going on water, and I'm not a good swimmer either (can't stay afloat or barely move).

Deus Meus!

You, my fried, just lost one of your nine lives. Possibly two or three.
:eek::eek::eek: Cannibalism is BAD!!!

I had a near death experience when I was young, a Uhaul truck hit another car which hit me(while I was on a bike), knocking me down and shattering both arms and my legs too, and the doctors told my parents it would have been fatal, if i hadn't worn my helmet... I also made a good recovery, only 2 months...(remember my arms and legs got shattered, I also had a major concussion)

Wow, John, that is a horror story with as Hollywood an ending for you as is possible outside California! I'm glad you made it, and especially that there will not be any lasting damage. Best wishes!

may I ask what car type you and her were driving? Can you estimate the speed difference?

Oh dear, I've never experienced something so terrible. Good to hear you're making a great recovery, and I hope you're back on your feet soon. :)

"Mother of Mercy" - Bill from L4D

You must have been a cat in your previous life, glad to have ya back.

Good God, that looks like a terrible crash. It's good to know that you're recovering and that you did not sustain permanent physical damage. My best wishes are with you. :)

On a somewhat more morbid note, this thread got me thinking, that if something fatal were to happen to a CFCer, we never would know, would we?

1. You are lucky indeed. You could've ended up paralyzed for life, or lost a limb, and yet it seems you emerged unscathed in the long term.

2. Can you tell us what car were you driving (year and make), and what was the other driver's vehicle?

It's a Lumina unless I'm mistaken.

howdja figure that out augurey?

Wow, gripping stuff.

Hope you make it back to 100% post haste.

Damn! Get well soon, bud!

Holy hell. That's amazing for you to survive something like that...me personally I've never even been so much as rear-ended, let alone in a wreck of that caliber.

Glad to hear that you will make a full recovery however...I also like how you're taking away many positive things from an otherwise terrible experience. :)
