Archaeology is AWESOME

I believe I read somewhere that you can trade great works with other civs. Might be useful for getting rid of the ones you don't need to make room.

You can trade one of yours for one of theirs, but only the same type.

This is so you can create bonus effects in buildings that take more than one, it's not useful for exchanging writing for art, etc. or can be used to free up space in anyway.

Archaeology is awesome, but there is one thing Firaxs needs to address. I've maxed out my space for great artistic works, now if I dig in a foreign land, the only option I have is to build a monument. This only benefits the civ I built it in, while I get nothing in return. There should be a an additional option, such as gaining one lump sum of culture, or queuing the artifacts found until I have a place to put them. However, does building a monument in a foreign civ earn my any diplomacy points with the host civ? If not, that would be a good consultation for the effort I put in.

I really like archaeology. The first time I completed the tech I was really overwhelmed. I just wish I would stop getting beads from the ancient era. :p

I also try to build maybe one archaeologist in each city and then build a museum immediately after so I don't run out of space.

Exactly, after filling my museums with worthless beads from plundered ruins, I've been finding city ruins, and barbarian battles, and shields from wars between city states, and now have no where to put them!

Why are beads worthless? They are the same as any other art or artifact. +2 cultuer +2 tourism. You can easily get theming bonuses by putting the artifacts of the same age in the same museum, and if you can get other civs you get an additional +2 and if they are all your civs you get +2.

Recently overheard from my citizens:

"Let's take a trip over to the Bead Museum in Moson Kahni. I hear it's nothing like the Bead Museum in our city."

This is probably what screwed me up more than anything. I had so much culture (as Poland) that I didn't bother building a museum anywhere but my capital. Can definitely chalk that up to a lesson learned!

you mean the Museum of Ancient Warfare? :mischief:

Yeah, where they commemorate the battles fought by throwing strings of beads at each other, faithfully recreated in New Orleans each Mardi Gras.

You can swap with other civs, but it's strictly 1 for 1, so you aren't making space.

You can trade one of yours for one of theirs, but only the same type.

Darn, okay. Thanks for clarifying.

Not so much a 'needs fix', but (meaning this in the nicest possible way!) it's a L2P issue. If nothing else, create Landmarks in your own lands and only get Artifacts from Digs outside your own control.

Otherwise, make sure your space expands at a faster rate than your acquisition.

Incidentally, I want to replace Napoleon with Belloch as France's new leader. Brave New World, indeed....

I agree, it seems that we need to exercise restraint. There's no need to consume all the artifacts in the world. You should only pick them up as needed.

Cathedrals now have a slot for a great work of art.

So if you plan on collecting a lot of artifacts it may help to select cathedrals as part of your religion.

Heck, if you're planning to go for a CV, especially if you're going tall-ish, Cathedrals are a great help. Saves you being reliant on wonders for early art slots.

I passed up Cathedrals for Swords into Plowshares, and I didn't really need it. It might be a good pick for hoarding GA, but otherwise, it's not absolutely essential.

I would like a mod where I could grab art off the web, drop it into a Civ data file with a title, and the game would integrate it into the game play.

I really like this aspect of the game, except the artifacts can be a bit boring. I want to suggest, every time a civilization constructs a mint in a city a gold or silver (or both) coin is created with an image of that civilization's leader and the date the mint began production. That artifact is then placed near the city, or near the city's current trading partner. Or Jewelry that can be found near a city with a gem mine (or with a trade route to that city). One could also focus artifacts more on the unique units that appear in particular games: like finding a Roman Legionnaire's sword or helmet where that unit once did battle, not just any old weapon, but only those associated with unique units.

How exactly do you use theming? Whenever I use a GWAM or dig up a great work, it automatically places it in the nearest open slot, without letting me choose a location. Is there a way to choose where it goes afterward? And what exactly counts as "theming" in order to get the bonus?

How are archeological sites spawned? I mean, has anyone noticed a significant impact on the number of wars etc. on the number of sites? Or is it more or less constant from game to game?

Is a spot for an archeological site created for every event such as battle etc.? Half of them? Or is it somehow randomised?

Can't be sure, so don't take my word for it, but it seems that "events" improve chances of dig sites randomly spawning. By events, I mean wars, ether with other civs or barbarians.

I noticed that if barbarians are turn on, some artifacts might be barbarian. If they are disabled, there will be nor barb artifacts, just other civs or CS ones.

and yeah, digs are awesome. It will either boost your culture for culture vic, or it will allow warmongers to defend from tourism if they neglect culture. And once you add hotels\airports and broadcast towers, you don't have to worry about influences anymore. :D

Click on the big button on the upper right of your screen with the musical note on it (between the globe button and the policy button). You can swap them around there.

The theming bonus vary for each wonder (i.e. for written works: great library wants two different works of different era and civilization, so you'll have to swap with another civ or conquer; oxford uni wants 2 different eras/civs that aren't you; and globe theater wants two works of the same era and civilization (likely yours)). If you hover over the theming bonus spot (+0, +1 etc) next to said wonder, it will tell you.

Archaelogical artifacts only go in museums (or two in the louvre) - they should be of the same era, and either both from your civilization or both not from your civilization (if they aren't from your civ, they don't have to be from the same civ, the museum gets called 'world' regardless).

Alright, thanks!
