This line struck me the most from the wikepedia article: "Some gain authority as public intellectuals.[1][2]"

I almost exclusively associate the term "intellectual" now with terms like "pretentious" and "self-absorbed". It makes me roll my eyes if someone self-describes as one and I don't see a point in someone being described as one by others. It's a fairly useless term, in my opinion. This could be because I don't consider myself to be intelligent and am therefore resistant to people not-named-me having their intelligence as a defining trait.

@yung.carl.jung and I bumped heads on this term a while ago. He has a far more forgiving perspective on it, one that I don't necessarily agree with but can at least understand.

I voted no in the poll, if only to not burn any bridges with my fellow forum-goers.

Well, forum intellectuals isn't the same as public intellectuals. I mean... in a forum the trolling (as well as non trolling) dynamics are very different, and we remain anonymous, by and large, let alone being from many different parts of the planet.

I think that the forum has likely an average (or a bit above?) level of intellectuality, but it would have been impossible to see many scholarly threads here. It possibly is relatively near other largish strategy game forums in that aspect, though at least compared to TWC (total war series) the subforums for history or related issues are a lot poorer in Cfc.
Basically this is an entertainment forum, so for that the level is ok, but not that intellectual. And a majority of OT threads are on politics or are serial threads.

Apart from that, I guess some of us are amateur intellectuals. It's a bit like amateur porn. Doesn't attract the big crowds, no widely recognized big names, but there's some really good stuff with no attached BS.

In all seriousness I voted 'yes' on the poll option because

An intellectual is a person who engages in critical thinking, research, and reflection about society and proposes solutions for its normative problems.

we all fit that definition.

I share @Synsensa's suspicion of people who self-identify as intellectuals. Not including myself, obviously, because reasons.

I voted yes. We're acting as intellectuals for the most part because most of what we spend our time discussing on CFC falls into the sphere people usually consider to be "intellectual" pursuits.

Whether we're any good at it is a different question. Obviously we're not public intellectuals, but being one of those means you have to be noticed and promoted by influential people who like your ideas, often for self-interested reasons. Even more obviously, people who loudly claim to be intellectuals usually aren't very good at it.
