Here's a definition...
prepper
Someone who focuses on preparedness, generally for various worst-case scenarios like peak oil or armageddon. Sometimes used to avoid the more loaded term survivalist.

I have a few extra cans of spam in the cabinet and a 9mm which I'd have for defending my family anyway.

Not much really if Yellowstone blows up or some virus goes for the gold.

Thought about it though. I'd like to have a shady spot if the bullets start to fly. An underground bunker with a year's worth of munchies, a laptop with Civ IV on it run off a solar panel... Games for the family and whatever to keep them entertained.

That sort of thing interest you? When I was in the army we had a unit emblem with "Toujours Pret" written on it. It mean always ready, but I'm not really ready.

Are you ready?

I would like to be, one day. Nothing extravagant, just a hole in the ground that's more secure than a house and is stocked with non-perishables, manuals, and self-sustainable methods of sanitation, energy, etc.

Such a thing would likely be useless in an immediate crisis. Not only would I likely die before I reach it, but the interior likely wouldn't be safe from radiation, bacteria, or some other boogeyman killer. The contents of it would be mostly for those who come across it at a later date as looters or explorers. Might be useful for them, especially in an apocalyptic setting.

You must have posted before the poll was up Synsensa, I didn't know that was possible.

Seemingly so, guess I pounced on this one a bit premature. ;)

I selected "Yes, I am, but I haven't done much to prepare." out of the options listed.

I have the usual stuff any sensible Prairie-dwelling Canadian would have on hand to get through a blizzard/extended power outage - candles, non-perishable food, bottled water, extra batteries, plus extra cat food and litter.

I don't do guns.

Doomsday preppers are silly.
Keeping some things on hand for realistic emergencies is always a good idea though.

Well I have a place that has all the outlined stuff above but it is more or less 550 km away, so its usefulness is kind of low.

From my extensive experience in watching post-apocalyptic B-movies, clearly joining one of those roving gangs of violent bandits is the way to go. They get to shoot off their guns and grab all the hot chicks without any guilt or sense of remorse...:goodjob:

I'm base my preparations on the likelihood of something occurring. The zombie apocalypse or an American invasion are very low on my list. Things like that barely register, so I don't need to do anything to prepare.

Things I prepare for are things like personal financial problems, which can always happen. You never know, right? I have money saved for that just in case scenario.

I wouldn't be ready for a world war 3 or canada-wide riots or anything like that, though. I don't even have a bat. My neighbours are families and stuff though, older couples with or without kids. They'll be easy to take out, so that I can raid the things they've been saving up. I'm not saying I would, but what's important is that there'd be some options for me.. and when all hell breaks loose, sometimes you've got to do things you normally wouldn't even consider doing. (Not killing them, but maybe stealing their weapons and food or even car)

I consider obtaining a firearm in case of societal collapse.

I'm an apartment dweller in an inner city, so there isn't a ton I can do, but I do have a 72 hour kit, and keep enough food and water around so if the power goes out for a few days, I'll be fed just fine. It's come in handy during snow storms before.

Back when I had a car, I'd keep a similar 72 hour kit in my trunk.

I have a friend who has a cache of guns.. all legal of course, properly locked up, and so on.. and in Canada the rules for guns are fairly strict, so they're never ever in sight or anything like that. Either way, this friend is a bit obsessed with dinosaurs and zombies and seems to be ready for either the zombie apocalypse or a dinosaur invasion. If all hell starts breaking loose, I'm heading downtown, which is where lives. His house is in a bit of a castle-like structure too, his apartment being only accessible via a wooden staircase. It seems like it'd be a structure much easier to defend than my house. So I'd head there. He also brews his own beer and makes his own vodka, so we'd have stuff to drink, he has bottles of his brews lying around.

I have another friend about 100km away who has a giant "emergency" zombie backpack, including knives, a tent, pocketknives, tools, freeze dried food, etc. Every imaginable thing you can think of that you might need in a natural disaster, you might very well find it in that backpack. The guy never uses the stuff.. just has too much money for his own good, so he stocks up on stuff like this, for zombie emergencies. If I were to guess, he likely has a lot more than just that large backpack lying around.. probably a lot of equipment, boots, clothing, etc. that would come in very handy during general unrest.. It's mostly a means for him to escape north into the wild, in the case of whatever. He would be able to use things in the backpack to hunt, set up shelter, and so on. Oh and did I mention guns? Yeah, he's got some too. Also some really nice large knives.

So yeah. If crap goes down, I'm seeking out both of these friends. They would make excellent allies.

I don't think that dinosaur or zombie apocalypse stuff is likely to happen, to put it lightly. However, given the fragility of modern society, I wouldn't consider societal collapse due to financial meltdown to be ridiculous, even if it is highly unlikely.

I have about 20 gallons of water & a couple months worth of food. Nothing that will realistically make a whole lot of difference.

I'm in NYC so realistically in the event of any sudden collapse my chances of survival are low.

I do have the show "Doomsday Preppers" (I believe that's the name) downloaded on my PC but haven't got around to watching it yet.

I'm a member of the peakoil forums but haven't gotten pretty bored with them & don't post there much anymore.

You're ahead of 98% of people, I'd bet. All you'd need to do is stay indoors for a couple months, then head out once everyone's starved to death and steal whatever's left.

I use this logic to help motivate my fitness goals, I figure a strong healthy body is the most important asset when things go down. Other than that I have essentially nothing, but in the future I when can afford it I would like a gun plus some food/water.

Earthquake preparedness, yes.

Any other disaster? No.

I think it's a mistake, generally. I mean, there are a few outlier events that are likely enough that it's worth insuring against, but my opinion, prepping is taking assets out of circulation that could be better used just reducing the odds of the disaster even occurring in the first place.

Survivalists and preppers kinda unnerve me. They seem to want to become murder-hermits who just shoot anyone who comes close and who expect to survive the disaster on their own. If there's such a disaster, the real success will come from people banding together, not being hermits.
