I understand, but that's not how it is in Civ IV or Civ V. The "F" command means Fortify for military units that can Fortify, but it means Sleep for those that can't.In Civ 3, if I remember correctly, these were 2 different commands with different effects (sleeping units woke up if enemy unit appeared). This could be the same, so workers could both sleep and fortify?

That's possible, but in that case I would expect all land units to have it after a certain age. There are a lot of post-1AD shots in which some units don't have it.Could it be related to embarkation? Isn't the unit indicator that shape when embarked?
It's not a status icon, it's in the list of promotions and attributes.Could the shield icon mean that the unit is inside the player's Zone of Control? In other words, that icon appears when the unit is not on the front lines, not in immediate danger of getting attacked?
