Art of the Possible

Murder is also illegal, and has been for centuries. We still enforce it. The Confederacy has expanded the practice of chattel slavery to Nicaragua, Venezuela, and elsewhere. You accuse us of trying to put Koreans in chains, when you are literally intending to do so.

Then abolition of slavery in Korea will not impact CSA in any way.

It will have no impact on the CSA, but again, this is foreigners imposing their will on Korea.

These two diplomatic statements of the Confederate office of foreign affairs sound incredibly contradictory when put together.

How so? I don't understand that at all.

We are not seeking to enslave Koreans. We have never expanded chattel slavery, and I'm fact it is decreasing in the face of industrialization. HOWEVER, it remains a respected institution, and we remain committed to protecting it where it exists. It is the business of Koreans what happens to Koreans.

Russian Imperial Office of Foreign Affairs declares that it considers its recent exchange of opinions with Confederate diplomats to be complete. No further exchange regarding the matters of Korean international crisis will take place between Russia and CSA.

Seeing the recent decline of fuel prices across the market we are now offering 10 Fuel for 1 EP each, up to a limit of 1,000 units of Fuel.

A clarification on the slave trade: Technically only the British and French outlawed the slave trade, along with a number of other states. The slave trade is still legal within the Confederacy, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Slaves are actively still caught (albeit not often) in Liberia and sold to those three nations.

@Amesjay: Peru has no other true international commitments at this time.

In reference to ownership of Manchuria: The territory of Manchuria is de facto recognized to be part of the Russian Empire and is considered to be annexed directly by Western Powers. The government of China has not officially recognized Manchuria as part of Russia and still claims it to be part of the Chinese nation.

Brazil wishes to buy 100 units for 10 EP.

Venezuela confirms this deal with Brazil.

The slave trade should not still exist. It was outlawed long before the civil war, otl, and I really can't see the CSA reimplementing it. According to most sources, it was growing hugely unprofitable by the early 1800s.

OOC: This seems a bit odd considering that the constitution of the OTL CSA effectively outlawed the international slave trade:

Article I Section 9(1)
The importation of negroes of the African race from any foreign country, other than the slaveholding States or Territories of the United States of America, is hereby forbidden; and Congress is required to pass such laws as shall effectually prevent the same.

It would also be exceptionally backwards for the CSA to promulgate international slave trade in this universe where both Britain and France outlawed it. That would severely limit their diplomatic capital for no real reason, since America's internal slave economy was robust enough not to require further imports.

edit: however the same article and section has a clause (4) forbidding the outlawing of slavery, essentially protecting it permanently until an amendment is passed, so it's probably safe to say that institution is fairly invincible barring... unforeseen consequences.

Prussia is willing to purchase 20 Fuel for 2 EP. We are willing to lock this amount in for the next 5 years if this suits.

I'll buy the 300 of your supply for the same price.

Given how painful the diplomatic process is on a phone, I'll write and post the terms of the treaty for Korea and the invited parties can propose changes. From what I can see, Japan is the only party that might object. The CSA owing to its offensive conduct is not welcome to contribute, although I will take into due consideration its objections. The CSA may sign the final product, the terms of which will include a clause abrogating the Treaty of Richmond. The CSA can sit out in the cold if it wants - but it must know that the Treaty of Richmondn is dead and buried and that any attempt to overturn it by force will be met by force. I can't speak for the other powers, but I should like to think that the word of the British Empire counts for something. The resulting Treaty will then be delivered to the Korean Government for signing.

Edit: Something something dangers of unilateralism something something.

EQ, how strong is liberal/republican/communist/other non-royalist sentiment in Russia in this timeline? Russia has fought a three-sided civil war less than a century ago, and such things leave plenty of welts in national mentality.

If Britain wants us to support the treaty, they can present it to us privately first so that we can comment on the draft. We would likely be able to smooth over our objections with assurances.

Diplomacy by press release has been proven to be enormously unproductive, if very entertaining.

The process will be open.

France will continue working with the United Kingdom for a situation that resolves Korea in a matter that deescalates the current crisis, and encourages its partners in Richmond to sign the final product when it is completed
