Just jumpin' on the band wagon folks

Ask away :)

- Accidently bumping the intercom while having a dicussion with my co-pilot about my marriage
- No, not really

How much do you actually fly the plane, as opposed to sitting there in case something needs to be done if the computers screw up ?

I'd rather assumed that, for the main transatlantic routes at least, you guys were there as a saftey net (and a much appreciated one..;)), rather than having to intervene much in the minute by minute flying of the plane.

We often hear jokingly in the media that pilots like to have a few before they get on board, is this accurate or do we really not have anything to worry about? In comparisson in this country a train driver has to remain at least one day clear of alcohol before he drives a train in my country. They tend to blood test them alot.

Have you ever been concerned by the actions of a passenger, you know drunk, potential terrorist, the usual.

Yes, that is actually true, i often drank before flights, but never over my limit, or the legal limit. But on the other hand, i do know some people who have flown while they were blind drunk!

What is the legal limit for commercial pilots?

It varies between nations and carriers.

questions: are you gonna answer all questions are only some?

which planes can you fly? if you can fly an airliner, can you does it mean you can also fly the old cargo planes of say ww2, like maybe a DC-3?

what else? could you fly a fighter? like say maybe an old one like a mig-21?
would you like to?

What kind of planes do you fly?
How long have you been a pilot?
Have you ever been tempted to do a barrel roll while flying a passenger plane?
What would your bosses do if you did?

i was trained as a commerical pilot, can fly DC-10s, 737s, 757s, L1011s and others similar, as well as light planes.

I've never flown a fighter jet before though theoritically i think i could get the hang of the basics, but i'd probably accidently eject myself or something, or launch missiles accidently at a civilian target.

I'll try to answer all questions, unless they are extremely personal. :)

I have being a pilot for 30 years.

I actually thought about what would happen if i did that, it wouldn't be pretty, the meal/drinks carts and unrestrained baggage would become flying shrapnel, and so would unrestrained passengers. People would be thrown about the cabin, a few necks would probably be broken, as well as a lot of serious injuries. Worst of all, the airframe would probably fail, sending the aircraft out of control.

I've flown for Eastern Airlines, Pan Am, TWA and American.

no, yeah, i know there are alot of gadgets in fighters that need special training to be used correctly, i just wanted to know if you could fly the thing.

cool.

is it true that airliner pilots get paid very little? if its true it sounds really crap, me i wouldnt want that kind of responsibility for all the money in the world, and if someone does, they should get paid more than doctors and surgeons.

life is full of big sacrifices for a little bit of fun ;)

btw, its past christmas. we need new years hats on our smilies.

yeah, pilots get pretty shite pay, so do stewardesses. i mean its nothing to strike over imo, but it could be better :)

i know it's past christmas. stay on topic.

Ouch....3 out of 4 ain't bad. ;) You work in an industry with an unusual business model. Capital intensive, unions and volatile variable costs. You'll be happy to know I received some American Air gift certs for Xmas though.

That leads to my question. It seems the industry is in for another round of consolidation.
How is seniority determined when your companies have been acquired?
With 30 years under your belt are younger pilots in front of you when flying the big planes?
