Ask a Part-Time Pettyologist -- THE SECOND TRY

I've never been a concert by anyone in my life.

I don't even know what "throwing stones" means.

It's a reference to the New Testament part of the Bible, where Jesus finds a group of men about to kill a woman for adultery by stoning her (throwing rocks at her until they kill her). Jesus picks up a rock and says, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Not one of the men there can claim that he has never sinned, so nobody stones the woman.

In other words, I was advising Owen against being hypocritical - to not say you are not a true Tom Petty fan because you haven't been to one of his concerts if HE (Owen) has not been to a concert for his favorite musicians.

In still other words besides: Being able to attend a concert does not make a person any more of a true fan than someone who is not able to attend a concert.

Well I suppose I could pull a Margo T.* and hitchhike to a concert. But I don't think that'd work out real good.

* Margo T., if you hadn't read the article I posted earlier, was this weird fan who ran the official fanclub for some time in the 1970s. She did things like write multi-page letters to the Heartbreakers days apart and hitchhiked from California to N.Y. for a concert. As someone told me, she makes me look relatively normal. She also looked a bit scary.

Have you been to at least one live concert of your favorite musicians? If not, then don't throw stones.

Lots of people are true fans of artists even though they haven't been able to see them in person. Me, for instance - I consider myself a true fan of Roger Whittaker, but I've never had the opportunity to see him live in concert.

Yes, I have been to Grateful Dead concerts.

I'm pretty sure Jerry Garcia is what's known as "dead"

Technically I've seen Jerry live too :p

Im not even sure what youre talking about. Anyways I have a video of the Buffalo concert the Petty/Dylan part. Parts of it were telecast for Farm Aid if my memory is right. The video is pretty good although I'm not sure whats up with Petty's hat and cowboy boots.

 He's a great singer that I would've liked to have seen live. I bet quite a few of the younger CFC members have never heard of him tho. :(

I'm just saying, if you are a big fan of an artist and that artist is famous almost singly because of their live performances, then you can't really call yourself a true fan if you haven't seen them live.

This is getting pedantic. TP&HB are also known for their recorded works. In fact, Petty has said several years back that he wanted to quit big tours. (He didn't, obviously.)

Can I tell a true story?

Yes, do tell, aimee.

Well probably a few people know that a band called the Replacements were the opening act for TP&HB in 1989. Anyways for some reason the Replacements were pissed off about this and their performances were sloppy (according to what I've heard elsewhere), and Paul Westerburg and T.P. did not get along.
Anyways for some reason the Replacements started doing weird stuff to try to get booted from the opening slot. (I'm not exactly sure it's a good idea to antagonize the Heartbreakers.) And they did stuff like spraying Raid (bug spray) in T.P.'s pot.
Finally, T.P. told them that if they did anything like that again they were fired. So they broke into Tom's trailer, stole his wife's dresses, and performed on stage wearing them. The next show, there was a new opener.

Oh, and Jane (Tom's wife) told them that they looked better in her dresses than she did.

The Replacements did the opening for King of the Hill, which frequently had Tom Petty as a guest star. Wonder if there's any connection there.
