Russia supported Lukashenko verbally, but didn't do anything beyond that. Putin probably fed up with him too. From what I see, Tikhanovskaya is not hostile towards Russia and we can work with her pretty well should she came to power. Which is unlikely.I just wanted to ask what is a Russian perspective on the ongoing protests and discontent after Alexander Lukashenko reelection.
Belarus is very important strategic ally, of course Russia would like to keep good relations, continue close economic and military partnership. Can't blame them for that but does Russia still holds them as a satellite country ?
Very low. IMO the right strategy for Russia is to wait and see who prevails without intervention on either side. If Lukashenko stays in power, with his low popular support and EU/US condemnation, Russia will get additional influence on him. If opposition comes to power, Russia's neutrality will help to keep good relations. What are the chances of armed Russian intervention or a "proxy war" if this would escalate ?
Tikhanovskaya left the country, went to Lithuania.
She published a video where said she made this decision voluntarily and urged protesters to go home.
