Ask an Austrian

What about other Austrians? When I lived in Germany I seem to remember this sentiment in the culture that Germanness as a concept was something that was important to the German people.. and by Germanness I mean all the cultures that speak German or have ties to Germany.. you know.. mostly Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, but also all the other German speakers around the world.

they're foreigners who speak about our language. of course you feel closer to them than to italians.
but you know, the more similar you are, the more you have to accentuate the differences to stay a different entity.
this is the strongest mechanism in austrian nationalism.

And do you feel connections with, say Dutch or Scandinavians, based on that Germanness?

as close as the languages feel (especially dutch) i understand <snip> in the end.
so no.

Pan-Germanism (including Scandinavia and the Dutch) isn't cool to you then, rite?

What kind of food do you eat there?and those dialects, do you study diferent grammars in school, or its just tradition passed by people?

viennese cuisine is a mish-mash of bohemian, hungarian, balkanese and italian cuisine. also, newest addition turkish.

When you go to other countries, how to people generally react to your being an Austrian?

sometimres they do the nazi stuff.
often they start to think really hard about something famous from austria they can throw into the conversation.
often they fail.

I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether there is a link between Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as other ethnic German pockets elsewhere around Europe (I'm sure they exist) in terms of you guys thinking of yourselves as some sort of a Pan-Germanic "Volk"

It's been almost 100 years since the Hapsburgs were ousted after over 500 years. Do young Austrians (16 to 40) think much about that heritage or do they relate to Austria as the "modern neutral" it has been since 1945?

the latter. almost exclusively. finding a monarchist (especially of that age) is nigh impossible.

Are holocaust denial and Nazi symbols illegal in Austria like in Germany? I know it's obnoxious but I have to ask, what do Austrians think of The Sound of Music? Do they think it's really stupid? What about Arnold Schwarzeneggar (sp?)

same laws as in germany. (i think almost to the letter).

austrians hardly think anythining at all about the sound of music because they tend to not know what the hell that is. vrwcagent of this forum once taught me. i shuddered.

schwarzenegger is really popular (especially since people dont have to listen to the voice acting of his movies, but rather watch dubbed versions. thank god he doesnt dub himself, they guy ended up not being able to speak any language correctly and without atrocious accent.)
the football stadium in graz was named after him once, but when they found out that the governor of california signs death warrants form time to time they were shocked and renamed it again.
however, after the usa kind of threw him out in shame, we rallied around him and
at the moment THERE'S TALK OF HIM RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IN AUSTRIA!

we dont.

Do all Austrians have an aversion to capitalizing letters? :hmm:

that's just me, when i was a kid a capital letter touched me... down there...

käseleberkäse, meat stuff no one would eat otherwise grinded into a paste, filled with cheese and baked.
it's incredibly delicious.

nobody make that stuff himself. you buy it in supermarkets, usually a slice in a semmel.

Leberka%CC%88ssemmel.jpg

i translate you a recipe for normal leberkäse (there's none for the cheese version, i guess it's impossible to effectively put the cheese in without industrial machines):

ingredients:

pork:
60 percent meager pork
40 percent fat pork belly

spices for one kg of pork:
22 g pickling salt
3 g grated white pepper
0,5 g grated majoram
0,5 g grated thyme
0,5 g grated nutmeg
0,5 g grated ginger

300g of icecubs per kg meat

preparation:

1. cut meat and put it in the freezer. needs to be close to freezing.

2. put icecubes in food processor and grind them, take the resulting mash out.

3. put meat in food processor and grind for 1-2 minutes, then put the ice cube mash in and grind again until you got a chewy paste.

4. take a cake tin, lubricate the inside with a fat you can heat well, put meat paste in.

5. bake for 90 minutes at 160° (top/bottom heat)

voila.

what the dictionary came up with for grammeln.

those (you're so gonna like this) are the non-fat part of bacon fried very, very long until jit looks like this:

Will you pester us again when in a few years we start building a few more nuclear power plants? It wasn't funny the last time round and we've got kinda tired of that joke :)

I heard the reason why he doesn't dub himself is that in German, he sounds like a farmer.

Anyone want reunification with Hungary/Bohemia/Moravia/Slovenia/Silesia/Galicia? Anyone want the Tientsin concession back?

Is "Austrian Economics" well-known in Austria? Do they have a different name for it?

Fat chance. Austrians tend to look down at us now (well, what else is new), so I can't imagine any of them would actually want to be in the same country with us (the horror!).

You'll always have a better alternative ;)
