Atlantic Treaty Organization-TWTUD Subthread

((Sorry for Double post))

The Republic of South Africa believes that Jet Engines will be the best to do first. Computing machines should come after.

The votes are made. Jet Engines will be researched this round.

OOC: The member list has been updated.

IC: USA Abstains from voting on the inclusion of Romania in ATO. They have just ended a rather vicious internal conflict that was exacerbated by outside forces. We feel that they should perhaps get their political affairs in order before applying for membership.

With Jet Engines nearing completion, the USA feels that our next target should be Transport Planes for next year.

The USA is also a bit concerned by the construction of the canal in Nicaragua and the implications that it may be expanded to rival our Canal in Panama. Were this to happen it would put Nicaragua in direct economic competition with America and we would consider it to be an attack on our business in the Caribbean. We do not deny that we have a monopoly on the transoceanic trade in the region, but it is for the simple reason that the majority of shipping through the Panama Canal is US trade. This Nicaraguan canal is a means for the American Accord to attempt to undercut us economically. If this construction continues, the USA will be ending the trade pact with the AA and urge ATO to do so as well. If Nicaragua actually has the canal go between the Pacific and the Atlantic, we would ask that ATO enact an embargo against the American Accord.

We are also rather disturbed to see that the American Accord is trading with the Muslims and feel that ATO should be watchful of such activities in the future.

IC: Germany votes Yea for Romanian admission, internal conflict and all. German soldiers will do their best to restore peace and order to the land, as well as assist the new Republic in stabilizing itself. This is a new nation, freed from Soviet rule; why must we punish them by not protecting them?

Germany can agree on the subject of Transport Planes, but thinks Military Rockets would serve us better. If the ATO nations choose to research Military Rockets on Jet Engines completion, it will provide us with a militaristic edge.

However, seeing as how Germany got her way last year, we'll cede the following research line:

Jet Engines
Transport Planes
Military Rockets (the AA have this; and we DO want to protect ourselves from them; but moreso than that, it will lend great military boosts)
Computing Machines (?)

As an added bonus, Germany will begin lending 2 IC per round to the research fund.

Finally, concerning the Nicaraguan Canal project and the AA trade with the Muslims, Germany is indeed concerned. Obviously the AA is attempting to undercut American economic hegemony, which has been beneficial to all the ATO nations (even indirectly the AA). Germany will not remove trade agreements, however, but will levy some tariffs if and only if the canal is completed.

As for the Muslims, naturally that disturbs us profoundly. But again, it is unreasonable to convince the AA to stop trading with them as European affairs aren't SUPPOSED to be theirs, and we can respect them in part for that.

UCS votes Nay on Romanian admittance, becuase of internal strife.

Concerning the AA stituation, UCS will cut all trade with the AA nations except Brazil, we need the rubber from Brazil, upon completion of their canal.

Italy votes AYE on admitting Romania into the ATO.

We also agree with Germany's proposal on the research line.

Italy would also like to note that poison defense, though old, has not been learned by a great many of ATO's members, Italy included. As such we ask that ATO members which this knowledge share it with other members.

lurker's comment: I'd just like to point out that the canal isnt a plot against you, I had no idea it even would start to exist until I read the update.

There is no conspiracy in the AA to defeat the ATO. That would be A) madness and b) pointless. The AA is an alliance striving to better South America and dedicate ourselves to peace, not war against the ATO. This paranoia is very....paranoid.

This Nicaraguan canal is a means for the American Accord to attempt to undercut us economically

Maybe for Nicaragua to do so. It has nothing to do with the AA.

we would ask that ATO enact an embargo against the American Accord.

Even if it was a method of doing the above, an embargo? ending our trade pact maybe, but an embargo would serve to unite us against you, nothing else. It might make us get close with... IDK... the muslims, asians, and communists?

We are also rather disturbed to see that the American Accord is trading with the Muslims and feel that ATO should be watchful of such activities in the future.

Trading with muslims is a crime nowadays? the ATO has blatantly rejected our trade offers. Do we not go to the next person down the list with the same offers?. According to the US we should stick to our part of the world, and in our part of the world the Muslims have done nothing wrong. Why not trade with them?

Military Rockets (the AA have this; and we DO want to protect ourselves from them)

This can only serve to start a cold war. Getting a tech because someone else has it is not a very good reason in the least. the protection comment shows that you are worried about the prospect of war, which would be incurred by you evidently, not us as I can assure you we have no intention of war with the ATO, only trade and peaceful co-existence with our neighbours to the north, west and across the ocean.

As for the Muslims, naturally that disturbs us profoundly. But again, it is unreasonable to convince the AA to stop trading with them as European affairs aren't SUPPOSED to be theirs, and we can respect them in part for that.

Thank you germany, you are starting to get this. We have been told to stay out of european affairs...by you. (note that america meddled in south american affairs for no reason, but we shall ignore this from now on. this is to prove a point, not because I am mad or want revenge or anything. this will be the last mention of this unless the US literally forces me to use it [read brings up a certain event that supposedly caused this].) So what exactly is wrong with trading with them? You are not at war with them, so there is just a rivalry stopping you from this, not any actual real reasons that cause you fear from us trading with them.

That's all until someone else brings up the AA.

It might make us get close with... IDK... the muslims, asians, and communists?
It would appear by your actions that you are already close with at least one of those groups

Trading with muslims is a crime nowadays?
Not a crime, but for ATO a concern considering that AA and the Muslims have significant borders with our alliance.

This can only serve to start a cold war. Getting a tech because someone else has it is not a very good reason in the least.
Oh yes, that would be terrible if we had the same techs as you. You have our sincerest apologies and solemn promise to never again attempt to usurp the American Accord's position as the premiere alliance system in the world. Please forgive our impudence and take these 50 virgins as a show of our servitude to Your Mightiness.

the protection comment shows that you are worried about the prospect of war
Of course we are worried about the prospect of war. Who wouldn't be?

Your ally has himself stated that this canal is meant to rival ours. We have up until this point been quite lenient as to who we allow to use our canal. That could change now that our generosity and open outlook on world trade has been scorned and demeaned...

ooc: Well perhaps its very reasonable IC to assume so regardless of OOC sentiments. As such your argument is really useless and undercuts the game

OOC: Was that directed at myself or j_eps?

ooc: either really, theres no need to argue with him in the first place

IC: The representative from Nicaragua would like to state that the canal and our many other projects(unmentioned in the update) are an attempt to a) Modernize and b) Comply with ATO demands to detach from their markets. Having thoroughly staked out North America and Europe as your theater of interest, the Nicaraguan government chose thusly to defer to you and diversify our interests elsewhere. This meant trading with Africa and the Muslims, as well as with the Asians. How does the American government propose we find different markets if we're not allowed to connect them via Allied territory. The Nicaraguan canal was only made necessary by the inclusion of South Africa in the alliance, thusly cutting off all feasible economic routes. We apologize if you feel slighted by the economic climate you created, and we would welcome American investment in the Canal project if you so choose. We also point out that this canal makes it more profitable for your merchants to ship from New York to the West Coast. It cuts off a day of the travel and saves millions in costs annually. But if the new American administration opposes freedom of commerce and free markets, we understand. Only know that we wish no belligerence in the construction of this canal, and we wish only for warmer relations with the U.S.A.

OOC: This being a game, In charater talk should be encouraged, not out of character threats and posturing. And it's 72 virgins, so the offer would be rejected in character;)

Also, where did i state it was meant to rival it. I see it only as an economic eventuality and complement to an increasingly inter-connected world.:)

The Representative from Italy would ask you to butt out, you're not an ATO member and not allowed to speak. We are not even going to read your message.

lurker's comment: actually, this is all public. any info you want to keep private, you either put [secret][/secret] tags around (which we obviously READ, but cant in any way reply or discuss), or PMing. As stated earlier in the thread, all confidential things go into PMs this is for public things.

And as a sidenote, directed at you now but others in the future, saying 'you arent supposed to post here so your arguments are invalid' is not a good idea, nor is it true to the world.

ooc: I know its public, but this is a private area of discussion. If he wants to reply he can do it in the main thread or open channels through the council of nations. And it is true to the real world, if Angola wished to speak at the G8 summit it couldn't and would have no way of doing so unless invited to speak, regardless if g8 policy is effecting their nation.

OOC: Sorry, for some reason i thought we had observer status. Will move to Council of Nations thread, sorry for the inconvenience.

Eire while appreciating the concern raised by America concerning the AA and the Muslims are in no rush to charge into an Embargo. We ask them to stay out of our affairs it is only reasonable we do the same unless it directly endangers our populations, just because America may be given some competition by this new canal is not a reason to get all worried about them attempting to 'attack' your economy.

Eire will take no part in any embargo's unless our people are directly threatened, we fight for a free world so lets not be hypocrites.

On the research side, we still think Computing Machines would be nigh on invaluable, though Transport Planes would be nice as well. We agree with Italy that not having Gas Defence is a tad worrying seeing as with say... Rocketry, someone could land a huge pile of gas in our cities if they so chose and we wouldnt have anything to stop them. If we're going to be paranoid lets be reasonable at least.

Spain Refuse to take part any embargo against any nation at this time, much less for such a flimsy reason. such a project as the Nicaragua have undertaken can only improve the Economic situation of the ATO, not hinder it. Yes, it will, in the short term, affect the USA's economy negitivly. but havening a second canal through which goods can flow from the Atlantic to the Pacific can only serve as a means to increase the trade in the long term.

With Computing Machines nearing completion, the USA feels ATO should pursue Transports.

Italy would like to ask ATO to aid it in economic sanctions on the nations of Greece and USSR after we have discovered large stockpiles of weapons from these nations within our border. These nations are in no doubt preparing to instigate a rebellion or coup within Italy and it is only our desire for peace which has kept an outright declaration of war.
