I saw this movie tonight and I was just wondering if anybody on CFC has seen it, and what they think. I have to say if anyone is or has been a fan of the Civilization series they will probably love this film, It is both beautiful and disturbing at the same time, and since the only narrative thread is images and music it is a really good excercise in independent thought. Give it a look see.

I never thought about that aspect of it, Mulholland. Whenever I watch it I am immediatelly astounded by the beauty of our planet, and then dissapointed when I realize that we might lose it all, if we're not careful.

Actually, I do remember comparing humans to ants during parts of the movie, and thinking about it that way - which sort of relates back to ritual.

It's interesting how many layers you can have in a movie without a plot or characters.

I have the movie but i didn't watch it. Maybe i will... :)

BTW Baraka is from Mortal Kombat 2. You are probably confusing him with Blanka from Street Fighter.

I saw this film over the weekend and was very impressed. I thought it would be a bit like Koyaanisqatsi but it isn't at all. What's really interesting about this piece, aside from all the wonderful glimpses of the earth and humanity, is that is speaks in an altogether different cinematic language. As Mulholland says, this makes for a refreshingly alternative (and highly symbolic) filmic experience. Its deep, ancient message is one we'll hear more of in time I reckon.

More of the same please!

I've seen it a number of times, the first time was about 11 years ago.

There's a nice old cinema near me that plays it once a month. Wonderful film.

Just a side note. The creator of Baraka has another movie slated for release this year called Samsara and I can't wait to see it. I just hope they release it in my backwods part of the world.

Where in Quebec are you?

Mulholland is from the Estrie region, or Eastern Townships for the likes of you! :p ;)

On a side note, Baraka was in Mortal Kombat II, not Street Fighters. :)
Edit: The cat killer beat me to it.

Yup I live in a predominatly rural region in Quebec very close to Sherbrooke. I just don't see the City as cosmopolitan enough to support the release of a thought provoking film like Samasara. Maybe though, it will be shown by a bunch of hippies at Bishops University which is also really close by.

I first saw Baraka in London, Ontario, which is no more cosmopolitan than Sherbrooke.

Even then, if you really want to see Samsara, Montreal isn't that far.

baraka is from mortal combat,

blanka is from street fighter.
