Based on you last names, Where is your family from?

Germany
England

Based on my last name as it is spelled now, my family is from the mind of an illiterate immigration official on the New York/Canadian border.

Based on my last name as it used to be spelled, and on one of my uncle's research, my family (at least that part with the surname) is from France.

Last name: Irish.
Then some German and good ol' English...

Oldest known ancester of mine was in the 11th or 12th century where my ancestor was the (body)guard of the King of Poland. The ancestor also shares the same last name as me.

This is why my family has a family crest, and were probably rich throughout history.(until the Russians screwed us up anyway.)

On my mothers side, it's a French name, which makes sense as before becoming a plantation owner in Haiti, my family was from Marseilles or something. My Grandmother on my Mothers side is supposedly from Galicia in Spain, and has a Galician name and everything.

How does that work?

It works Great! Being descended from the two largest groups of the obviously superior people (the West Germanic people) it means I run this planet.

No I mean how does a surname have two origins?

Or is it like Goddwynn Hitler-Churchill? xD

OP said:
For me, my last name is Irish. My grandpa's is Norwegian, and and grandma's is German. I am a mutt. What about you?

Look at the OP. It's not just your surname.

Germany/Poland. It's one of those wierd hybrids from constantly getting conquered. My grandfather insists it was originialy polish but I'm not so sure.

well my father's family took the name of the family they were travelling with- so my last name doesn't mean anything.

Well what is it? (If you don't mind sharing)
Gersch. But it was German-ified. My grandfather insists it was Gerschevski or something like that originaly.

According to my familys surnames from both sides, my roots are in Savonia and Karelia. I'm a Savonian and proud of it.

If it was Polish, my best attempt at translating it would've been "Gerszewski" or something like that. It does sound like the name was butchered by the Germans though.

My middle name (from my mother) is Belgian (Flemish to be more precise).
My last name (from my father) is Spanish (Galician to be more precise).

Curiously, my dad is much more Italian than Spanish, but he has a Spanish last name. We only have one known Spanish ancestor, but we still carry his name even though the family is mostly Italian now.
