Based on you last names, Where is your family from?

Bates. South Scottish or North English in origin.

Ruuuuule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!

Then again, my family is a melting pot like many Americans' - Chinese, French, Swedish, Native American - and so English isn't anything special. Genetically-speaking, we're from all over, rather than one specific place...

My father's last name Fernandez apparently has Spaniard roots.

As for my mother's, It's weird. Lemus. It apparently is either French or Spanish as well.

My last name is of English decent and from what I've dug up, my family on my father's side has been in America since near the beginning, either Jamestown or one of the early settlements in Pennsylvania.

My mothers side is pure Italian dating back to the Roman Republic.

So your mother's last name is Latin?

I just found out that my surname comes from Northern Castille, Spain. I knew my middle name came from Northern Italy, between Milan and Venice, and my first name was originally Latin.

So your mother's last name is Latin?
No, it was changed several times to match the language used in Italy. Originally it was Latin, but eventually it became Italianized much how English names are Romanized. However when they came to America in the late 1900s their last name was changed to Staudt because the customs officer on Ellis Island who brought them in couldn't pronounce their last name. My mother's side original Italian name was Mondanaro.

My last name is Italian (though those pesky customs officials corrupted it a little). If you trace it back far enough, it was originally "DiAnnunzio", or "of the Annunciation". On my mother's side, my mother's maiden name is derived from the German word for "bell", and my grandmother's maiden name comes from the French word "bayonet". So I consider myself Italian and Newfoundland-ish in heritage.

Irish. They're all. I'm also basing this on my place of birth, and on the place of birth of all of my living relatives. So, mostly Irish.

According to my dad, my last name was made up when my family immigrated here.

So you'll never know where I'm from!

OMG SAME:D Except my last name was Macedonian and was changed.

Ireland, specifically the North-West. I also have a bunch of ancestry from different parts of Ireland and along the West coast of Scotland, so generally a big old heap of Gaelic. Among other things, it gives me the choice of both Campbell and Morrison tartans, should I ever feel the needed to get the breeze between me bollocks.

Going by my last name, my father's family originated in the vicinity of York, England

Not sure about my father's name besides generally German, but my mother's name and family were Prussian when Prussia was a state. Supposedly, my ancestor was a draft dodger following German Unification...which I guess makes it German and not Prussian, but that's okay.

Interestingly, one of my father's students says she can trace her lineage to the 13th century, when her ancestor was a general in China who fought Ghengis Khan. Stayed behind to defend some city after the civilians, and his family, were evacuated.
