crap, I've been looking at the old thread and wondering why it hasn't been updated.

I've noticed that we are on the precipice of rank 900 as a team

I've had a couple server and workstation crises over the past few days (nuking a perfectly good Saturday, too) so my numbers are probably going to fade a bit. I've also pointed my Linux boxes (2 so far) at Team Ufie (www.userfriendly.org) as I re-happened on that comic strip recently and credit it with reigniting my interest in Linux, so it seems fair.

But, TeamCFC still gets the lion's share, at least until we break into the top 800 and I clear the 100K points line.

Generally, if a machine is left on just about all of the time (including at night), but does very little (ie at the max does word processing), should I leave the CPU percentage at? Do you think that it will hurt the machine/ reduce the lifespan if I leave it at 100% 24/7?

There are some mechanical parts that get worn by simply having the computer on, specifically fans and hard drives. A hard drive can power down when not in use so you could set them to do that. If the processor runs at 100% it will generate more heat and thus the fans will increase their speed which could cause them to wear out sooner.

Other than that I don't think anything is 'worn', but maybe I'm wrong..

edit - I'm not sure if the hard drives are actually spinning at all when they're not being accessed, if they aren't they're probably not worn either, just using some power.

Aside from an increased power bill, leaving your computer on 24/7 won't seriously affect it - if you have proper cooling. Laptops in particular aren't designed to be run at 100% all the time, but most desktops won't have a problem. Unless you start getting random reboots you should be ok at 100% all the time. That's what I do. By the time the physical parts wear out, your computer will likely be outdated enough it's not worth keeping up anymore.

Very good then, They will (with 2 new ones who will donate every once in a while) continue to slave away for the cause of Sid and the glory of the Thunderfall. As you said Taper, for my laptop I have had to turn down the percentage (once down to 50% what a difference in time till completion!), but since I now live in a much cooler house than previously, I have been able to bring that back up, I have one computer with a 10,000 frame WU (no joke!), so watch out IglooDude, You're going down! :p

    For another question:
Do you know if there is a way to use folding@home on a computer that doesn't have access to the internet (like maybe floppy disc)?

Yes! It's called the sneakernet(as in the shoes, because you run around). It's more work on your part, but doable.

According to OverClocking we should be ranked < 800 sometime on March 3rd or 4th depending on your time zone. I wonder how accurate that prediction will be.

On a side note, who is supposed to update the fold@home team site? Right now according to it we have a home page that is locked. Not a good way to welcome new people!

IglooDude is rapidly approaching 500 WUs. We need to think of an appropriate salute/prize/thingamajiggy for his milestone.

Well, if y'all want to chip in for a motherboard, processor, and RAM, I'll build a server around it, put it on a UPS, run it 24/7/365 in my basement, and use it purely for TeamCFC folding and CIVivor Pitboss game hosting for the OT regulars. :mischief:
