It's definitely not a virus. However, some people may have problems with the program - all programs can cause problems. Sometimes I disable it myself since I suspect it causes certain programs to be slightly less stable which can crash my rather shaky computer.

It is not any type of virus. So far there have been almost 500,000 individual contributors.

Did he say why he believes it is a virus? Did his anti-virus program incorrectly identify it?

Nope thats all he said, i know it isnt a virus ive had it running for months now but i've asked him to get back to me so when he does ill ask him about what is going on.

It's considerably less destabilizing to a PC than Civ4 is; it sounds like he doesn't know what a virus actually is.

On an unrelated note, what happened to Speedo?

I seem to remember from the Folding@Home Forum that there were some reports that some Antivirus software incorrectly identified it as a virus. This was from quite a while ago though, so unless it's old antivirus software he's running it should be OK.

Broadband's running nicely then IglooDude?

If your running F@H while running large applications, of course they (large applications) wont work.
I can run large applications all right with F@H running. Even Eclipse works with no more problems than usual and my computer is not anywhere near top of the line.
I suspect Alex's problem lies elsewhere.

I run it constantly and havnt seen any marked effects on me running games, he's still getting back to me on how he worked out it was a virus.

It depends on the program i guess. i had problems with it constantly minimizing a game, and also had a problem where it completely disappeared from the task bar when it was still running. I had restart my computer to fix that, since every time i tried to end the process in Task Manager, it kept coming back.

Is it okay I joined without telling anyone?

Of course, and welcome. :)

Just be sure to put 47958 as your team number in your configure > user menu so you get proper credit for your work.

Your name will show up on this list as soon as your first WU is finished and processed.

My little 'its a virus' friend has said that it isnt a virus now but that it when its running it wont allow large applications to load so i just told him that he could run it when hes doing little things and then turn it off for big things.

Good call.

anywhere from 10 hours to 4 days. depends on the size of the WU and the power of your computer.

I got 50000 frame WU's and I think I'm on day 7 on the current one, but they are worth a hella ton of points.
