Beards improve combat effectivness

I'm sure it has already been mentioned that beards interfere with gas mask effectiveness. It's why we were told we couldn't grow them in the Navy (even out to sea).

Yup - you can't form an effective seal - but the real reason, in my opinion, is that keeping your face clean both serves to mark you out - even now I can spot a soldier from sixty paces, and one of the give-away features is the very clean shaving - and demands a certain level of discipline. The same discipline that allows you to shave every morning, even when you're so hungover you can barely walk straight, will also serve you well in the field when you have to sort your rifle out, sort your feet out, sort your kit out, get some food on, and then crash in your sleeping bag.
