Murphy`s law. All morning monitoring for the save (well, after early morning surfing, of course) and when it finally comes It`s time to go out with the family...
I got it for tonight/tomorrow. Expect report tomorrow evening.
Re: sugar town vs sugar plantation ... I agree with Rex. In fact, I would farm the sugar instead, as it is less painful to change it into a plantation plus farm is always superior than cottage.
Roster
GreyFox – getting ready to jump that branch
Berserks01 – swung around Lucky with a swap
Rex Tyrannus – swung for sugar
Negyvenketto – swung already
Lucky 1972 – swinging now
Fox, I believe Rex was talking about the spices.... he got sugar via a trade using the spice plantation which he converted from a spice town.
I need to apologize to you all for posting a report without pictures. I played in my new laptop computer and assumed the screenshots would work the same, but they didnt. I have to figure out what happened. Fortunately, Ruffs mod did work.
Summary: Until turn 9 I thought this report would be very boring. On turn 10 Mao declared on us (after making peace with Mansa). We have money to upgrade at least 6 axes/swords to maces. Mao has a lot of catapults in his city near Banana Three and is sending a GG Cho-ko-nu along with 2 cats and a few more ground troops (screenshot missed they are 3 squares away from our borders near Banana Three).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Turn 170/460 (1100 AD) [09-Jul-2007 07:55:26] Tech learned: Code of Laws
I traded Construction + 70gold to Julius for Code of Laws
IBT:
Turn 171/460 (1110 AD) [09-Jul-2007 08:03:19] Champagne begins: Stable (3 turns)
More powerful Phants and some HA to come from here.
Tech learned: Paper
Begin Education (11). I thought about stopping middle way to wait for the GS, but then forgot about, now it is almost done.
I build a Granary in Banana Two and start a Missionary for the new city (before letting it complete the Market)
Turn 173/460 (1130 AD) [09-Jul-2007 08:37:21] Banana One begins: Hindu Monastery (3 turns)
Mainly for the science. Banana Three begins: Theatre (3 turns)
I like strong culture in borders cities (although now I think this will be an interior city soon).
IBT: Attitude Change: Mao Zedong(China) towards SpaceMonkies(Zululand), from 'Pleased' to 'Cautious'
I refuse another request from Mao to join in the war against Mansa. I still think it was a good decision. In fact, although we will probably get pillaged a little around Banana Three until we get more troops there, I feel this war will benefit us.
Turn 174/460 (1140 AD) [09-Jul-2007 08:47:14] Champagne begins: Longbowman (3 turns)
Did I think Longbowmans are mounted units or what? (must have been a misclick, but I did build a longbowman in our stable city)
Yue-Chi finishes its Library with the help of two chops (one out of BFC).
Turn 176/460 (1160 AD) [09-Jul-2007 08:59:33] Banana One begins: Aqueduct (5 turns)
It was already unhealthy.
Champagne begins: War Elephant (4 turns)
5 xp elephant coming up. Banana Three begins: Stable (4 turns)
Turn 177/460 (1170 AD) [09-Jul-2007 09:07:39] A Workshop was built near Yue-Chi
After the dubious (or maybe obviously bad) move of cottaging the spices, I build a workshop before guilds, state property and whatever else make them useful. I had to wait around until borders pop to improve the corn and the pigs, and I didnt see us working that plains tile for a while, so I built this for the (far) future. Banana Two finishes: Market
Turn 178/460 (1180 AD) [09-Jul-2007 09:12:34] Banana Three finishes: Stable
IBT: Mao Zedong(China) and Mansa Musa(Mali) have signed a peace treaty
Turn 179/460 (1190 AD) [09-Jul-2007 09:16:31] Champagne begins: Horse Archer (3 turns) Banana Three begins: Settler (6 turns)
We capture Bulgar with no losses. I start the settler for the other city Rex suggested.
Turn 180/460 (1200 AD) [09-Jul-2007 09:27:02] Mao Zedong(China) declares war on SpaceMonkies(Zululand)
I shift some troops, but let most of the decisions to the next player (fight the temptation to play a few extra turns to get the Pyramids but figure it wont be so few). I noticed our powergraph decay relative to the others in the middle of the turnset, but did not build many troops, that may have encouraged the declaration. I ran all turnset at 100% science, now I lowered this a bit as a suggestion. I did not check for war allies. I did make peace with Hannibal for 70 gold.
SpaceMonkies(Zululand) and Hannibal(Carthage) have signed a peace treaty Banana Three begins: Longbowman (4 turns)
Another longbowman in a stable city, but no hammers invested. We do have some hammers invested in a settler here.
Spoiler:

I believed it's finally my turn to roar "O-ee-oo-ee-oooooo" again ...
Have a brief look at the save this morning before heading to work (since there is no pictures ).
Mao is funny ... he declared on us ... but seems to have a few stray workers one tile away from our borders (or are my frail eyes finally failing me)??? :hmmm: ... likely bribed by Han.
We could enlist Temujin's aid with all our techs, but I don't think I would do that.
We have 4 bananas, and I counted 6 cities ... we are close to the limit. Beijing would be nice (it has only 1 tree ... but I guess the 3 trees rule only apply to founded city, not captured city), with Pyramids, Hanging Gardens and Great Wall.
I wouldn't either, but we could check on the Romans if their help would be cheaper ...

- NEVER EVER fortifies workers. At least not before industrial age where all railroads, improvements, lumbermills are already built.
- We had obviously run out of space ... why one more settler being queued?
I re-negotiated some trades, gobbling up the extra gpt from Temujin and Caesar.
Also upgraded some axes to maces in anticipation of some Chinese forces ... and here they are:
Featuring a Warlord ChoKuNo. After killing our mace, the stack was eliminated by the rest of our defenders.
Thereafter, I made a slow push towards Nanjing, and finally, one turn before my last:
This also give us a new general (unmoved, leave it for next player. Suggest attaching to a warrior for free upgrade to mace).
Hmm ... Cao Cao? Isn't that a Chinese general? He must have prefered the swinging life and deflected.
In the other news, we got a prophet. The Hindu shrine is not available, so I assumed it is already built. Decided to settle him in capitol (since we can only build space parts in banana cities, we need the hammer in capital).
I had also push the research sliders up to 100% to get Education one turn earlier.
With that in, I pushed on for Liberalism ... but we had to decide what to take with it. If we want to maximize beakers, Astronomy is the best choice. But we need compass and optics then. Else, we could go for Nationalism and get ourselves the Taj Mahal.
I also made some trades:
Giving us the much needed +1 road movement and access to trebs.
The trade to JC is more of a because-paper-is-already-out kind.
Final turns, our forces are heading towards the prized city of Beijing.
Suggest suing for peace after capturing it ... or if cultural pressure on Beijing is great, go ahead and razed some more cities beyond Beijing ...
... but I am swinging way ahead of my branches. That's other monkies' businesses.
Well, Fox did a great job MM the cities, so there's nothing that needed changing (except for switching a citizen from a forested plains to a forested plains hill cuz city is at happiness cap in Champagne). Nope nothing at all.
I feared us not making it first to Lib if we go the Astro route, so I leave research as is. As expected, we were first to Lib and I got us Nationalism. Champagne having just finished it's whatever, started the Taj.
I attached the GG to a worker as Fox suggested as well ... though I wasn't sure why he suggested it, maybe workers can chop a forest in 1 turn or grow bananas from nothing :shrugs:
After several turns of bombardment, Beijin's defense is finally down to 0 and I start the attack. Suicided 4 pults, 2 died, 1 withdrawn, 1 killed a CG+Combat1 longbow at 1.4% odds, and we took Beijing with no further loss.
Of course, Mao went crazy trying to get it back. He sent the equivalent of a few modern armors at us and still have a couple of stacks outside Beijing at the end of my turnset. So ... good luck to the next player
Along the way we also learned
and
and are currently researching Astro.
I also have a stack outside another of his city very lightly defended that we can take easily.
Did we revolt to Representation when we got the Pyramids? It will be useful, as we are running a fair amount of specialists as I recall ... though some of bigger city may not be able to handle it ... (like capitol, which relies more on MP for happiness).
No, I did not revolt to Rep. I was too busy watching Mao throw unit after unit at Beijing trying to get it back. We're still holding on, but we're down by some units ourselves so Rex should handle it with care
Sorry, I need to correct this. I was under the impression that those workers spent my whole turnset idle because I did not noticed them but that`s not the case. I just looked at the save I handled Fox and remembered: they slept one turn waiting for the borders to pop for them to farm the corn. But then I forgot to order the farm to be built. Of course I should have pressed space, not put them to sleep (that way I wouldn`t have forgotten them). Thanks for pointing that out, GreyFox! (fortunately, we actualy didn`t lose any worker turns)
