So I finally joined 2009 and got an iPhone last week for work. I've amazed at how many amazing applications I can get for nothing (or almost nothing). I have a few great recipe apps, multiple good news applications, maps, the LDS cannon, a flashlight...they're all great.

I have about a 40 min public transportation ride to and from work every day, and my internet coverage is pretty poor on that trip. I'd really like a good game, and not Angry Birds, because Angry Birds sucks. A strategy/simcity type game would be best, but a puzzle or an entertaining action would be okay too.

What are you favorite mobile games or applications?

Here are some of the games I have/have had in the past on my Ipod -

Temple Run (seriously awesome game), Jetpack Joyride, Words With Friends, Doodle Jump (Though it costs money), FallDown, Robot Unicorn Attack , and PlagueInc. (Although I haven't had it it is very fun).

Well I have an android phone so these may not be on the iPhone but: Super Sudoku, Unblock Me and Temple Rush are the games I most commonly play.

Also make sure you get the app RealCalc. It's the best calculator app I've seen so far. (And Algeo Calculator is a good graphing calculator app)

Unrelated, but why have people not taken all this new touchscreen and smartphone technology and make a fricken super-calculator with tons of options that can double as a scientific and graphing calculator etc. all in one?

Dont' know if it's available on iPhone, but I really enjoyed Apparatus It's essentially a physics sandbox. You are given a few items - some planks, or beams, perhaps a motor, and your challenge is to get the ball into the goal. Sometimes it's easy - just make a seesaw. But other times you need to make a series of croquet-style pitches. I'm pretty sure it was free?

Err... Angry Birds Rio?

Plants vs. Zombies is decent enough.

I'm not sure if it's on the App Store, but there's a version of Freeciv for Android.

One thing to consider is that some games or apps require an internet connection. To test this, simply turn on "Airplane Mode". If the app still works fine, then it will work underground as well.

I use an app called Reddit Is Fun for viewing reddit threads. I can load an entire thread before the train goes underground, and then read through the whole thing. Pretty sweet. Of course, if I want to comment or upvote, I'm thwarted.

The only mobile game I've ever played for any length of time is Populus Romanus on my Android. Not sure if it exists for the iPhone.

Which ones work on iphones, and where do you find ROMs for them?

I have an Android, so I don't know. I just searched the store and found one. You can google the ROMs, they're everywhere. Of course, if you don't own the game, it's technically illegal to download them.

I've enjoyed playing a lot of SNES classics.

On a similar note, the 9gag app serves it's purpose.

I believe that you pick up infinity blade I for about $1. A lot of apps fluctuate in price. I would download something like appzapp and it will send you alerts about price drops for whatever apps interest you. You should see a lot of deals around Xmas. I've also like Sid Meier's Pirates.
