How many Ram a 32 bit Os can handle?
I want to maximize my laptop performance

As much as you can afford. Only caveat to that is vista only recognizes 3 gigs, but that doesn't mean you can't put more in, vista just won't list it as more than 3. What you really should be looking at is how much the motherboard can handle. What is the make and model of your laptop?

I posted a link to a detailed explanation of this in the rom forum thread about this, but Afforess is right. A bit over 3 gigs is the most a 32-bit OS will handle, it's pointless to have 6 gigs of ram and a 32 bit OS.

The 3 gig limit only matters for Windows Vista as far as I know, I haven't really had the pleasure of trying different configurations out with 7 yet, and I'm not a big fan of Unix or Mac's, but I had 4 gigs in an XP machine that I think was 32 bit and it registered every last drop.

It's all 32 bit OS's, look in the rom forum thread I mentioned for the link to a detailed explanation of why. There IS a 64 bit XP, but it sucks cuz you need 64 bit drivers for everything... and there's almost no support/drivers.

It may have been a 64 bit version then, that computer was many moons ago, before I started to really learn about them.

BTW, I am not seeing that link anywhere.

I've been using XP Pro 64bit OS since March on all forms of RoM and some of Afforess ModMods as well as Vincents. I'm using 8GB of DDR2 1066 Ram and Dual Core Wolfshead E7400 chipset on a Gigabyte MoBo. I've had 1 CTD since March and no MAFs. The basic 64 bit drivers are out there and not hard to find. So I don't know where you come up with the last part of your statement Blackflag. It's actually ill informed.

I'll stick with this 64 bit system till I get more reviews on Win7 64 bit.

I get that last part because having only BASIC drivers is to me, little/no drivers. Vista is crap, but I'll probably end up going with win7 when they release a sp for it. I've installed xp 64 bit a couple times and every time it's been missing drivers I needed for the system to be retail-worthy, so ended up reformatting and going with xp 32 bit instead.

Maybe in the last year that's changed drastically and I wasn't aware, but I don't see why that would change with win7 already here and xp being a legacy OS. I never said XP 64 wouldn't work, or that you couldn't find any drivers, but why go to all that trouble for a legacy OS when all reports are win7 works great? (I refer to it as legacy cuz the only way to legally acquire winxp is by purchasing vista and "downgrading" to XP).

It's works flawlessly. Been using it since RC. I have pro edition. Thank you cheap college bookstore... ;)

how much? because I need one for school but it is a high school so no discounts, if it is a good bit cheaper I may send you the money (+ a little extra ;)) so you can send a copy for me

It's like $40 for Pro Upgrade Student Edition. Upgrade edition pretty much covers any PC built in the last decade, so that's all you need. You sure your school doesn't have some MSDAANA? I bet if you "befriended" your computer tech's, you could get a copy for free. I got my copy free from the computer science department at my college. ;)

A lot of high schools (my old one including) had a membership to MSDNAA. How do you think they payed for all those copies of MS Office? The Alliance sells bulk copies, much cheaper than usual. Even if you aren't buying bulk copies, if your school has an alliance, you should be able to get them cheaper.

I should add

I go to a charter school

I've already asked tech for a cheap copy of XP/W7 and they basically tried to obfuscate the answer meaning they can't/wont give me a copy

my school is insane, we have over 400 computers and 1 1/2 tech people

It's for my MacBook

Yeah, my high school was like that too. 4/5 teachers sucked at using technology, it was pretty funny.

I suppose you can always wait 2 years, then get a copy dirt cheap at college. W7 will still be there.

actually... I'm planning to join the Canadian military so college could be a while,

how much money should I send you again?

Acer Apire 4530
I don't know what my Motherboard is
I use Xp Sp 2
So if i use 4 gb ram, my laptop will not be able to use 512 mb of it, because it can only recognize 3.5 gb.
Is it how it worked?

Yeah, with 32 bit anyway.
