[Beyond the Sword] History In The Making

Two bugs, one of which is noted:

TALIBAN_EVENT (which is a barbarian uprising event, apparently. The text is nonexistant.

One of the functions of the great general gives all units "FREE UPGRADE", which doesn't seem to do anything, and is noted in the Civopedia as a placeholder. :D

The event is something Grave just added, I'll have a look at it.

The free Upgrade actually comes from building an armoury, which is a GG function, U need Monarchy to be able to do this. Units built in this city, then get free upgrades for the whole game (but lose the xp down to the next lowest lvl)

got a question about automated workers they seem to really like to build fortreses alot instead of something usefull like cottages :) are they supposed to build fortresses all over the place

They do when u adopt Monarchy, forts provide bonuses under Monarchy, check the ingame info screens.

ah ok was wondering about that if i leave them un supervised all they build is fortreses :)

So is there a solution to get the ranged bombardment to work fully or no?

Sorry not one I have myself at present (I didnt design the mod as I said) just trying to help for the present....

Have u tried a WB test, e.g. similar to the one I did? I personaly think it some kind of anomaly in DCM, but no-one else seems to have it...

So

TO EVERYONE USING HiTM: can u range Bombard (with Trebs or better), yes or no would help, thanks..

Yes, i can range bombard with trebs and cannons (just tested it in my game, it was a good thing to have all my sieging force on a near-border city, when the enemies arrived, i just picked them with range bombards to "weaken", while they foolishly tried to bring my walls down (10 free-damage turns while i got units to counter them) and saved my 3-holy city (that's a bug? i got 3 religions in the same city IN A ROW :3).

So, theres that. Range Bombard works, im using 1.54 and 3.13 BTS.

Ok... so it won't work with a normal catapult, but it will with Treb or higher.

Hi Grave!

Thx again for this mod. Just finished a Prince-level game on 1.51, played Augustus Caesar. It was great and the aztecs a really tough rival. And even Gandhi was hard (normally he offers to be vour vassal just after researching vassalage).

The (unspectacular) unit I appreciated most in this game was the Air Transport which makes troop movements on this large map I played more easy and realistic.
Air transport via airports does only work in own or vassal cities, but now I can use my good friends with an open-borders-treaty as concentration area for my troops quite quickly and I do not have to send large amounts of infantry via fleets to other shores when I have already researched stealth bombers and fusion.

Zoid, looking forward to another great game in 1.54 as Zara Yakob

Anyone offer some help? I keep getting a memory allocation error crash. used to only happen sometimes when I was trying to load but have had it occur in middle of turn too.

Any suggestions?

Great mode by the way, thanks

Hi ruffriders23

I don't know what you mean by Ranged Bombard, if you mean the icon you click to get the marker you use to select the target then I enabled it for Catapults.

Open CIV4UnitInfos.xml, look for:

<UnitInfo>
<Class>UNITCLASS_CATAPULT</Class>
<Type>UNIT_CATAPULT</Type>
.
.
.

scroll to the end of this unit and add two lines just before:
</UnitInfo>

The lines are:

<iDCMBombRange>1</iDCMBombRange>
<iDCMBombAccuracy>50</iDCMBombAccuracy>

So it looks like this:
<iDCMBombRange>1</iDCMBombRange>
<iDCMBombAccuracy>50</iDCMBombAccuracy>
</UnitInfo>

The first line enables it, while the second line is for percent
of accuracy, 50 is the same as for TREBUCHET.

I played a few turns to get to trebs. The ranged bombardment graphic is there [white grid] then the treb bombards units in the field. Every time though there was no damage done. I never managed to harm anyone in five or six turns. Also when I bombarded units in the city the treb "did no damage"

So the function works for me, but no very effectively. I dont know if it's bugged or just balanced.

It's working all right for me .

Trebs are specialized siege tools with city bonuses.

As field artillery, they were pretty lame because they have a slow rate of fire take and take a long time to zero in, therefore nearly useless against moving targets.

I think the game reflects that pretty well.

I've had my share of MAF crashes this year. I eventually fixed them before installing HitM.

One problem was my HP laptop gets pretty hot running graphics, so I need a coolpad to go more than 45-60 minutes..

Drew might be able to help you with tweeking your settings.

Can you post your RAM and virtual memory?

I got 2 G of Ram and 2 G of virtual.

it might be that I was playing planetary map size though honestly *grin*

Planetary maps (I assume logically) use an awful lot of RAM, even though 2gig is quite a lot. I'd personally say to set your VM to a max 4 or 5 Gig, might help MAF related crashes.

Haven't personally had time to look at anything CIV related today, will try to fix some of the bugs mentioned earlier at the weekend.

And it looks like Ranged Bombard is working as intended after all, thanks for replies :) If anyone feels that the siege units "miss" too often, then its best to take that up with Dale, as its his mod....

Laters..........

Ok, maybe I'm not understanding. The "Free Upgrade" upgrade doesn't do anything according to the 'Pedia.

What are you saying it does?

@Duuk: It gives you the 'ability' to upgrade a unit for 'free'. When you have discovered Monarchy, and have a Great General, you will have an option to build an armory with that great general in one of your cities if you wish. If you choose to build the armory in a city, then units which are trained in 'that' city will be tagged with a free upgrade symbol. throughout the game you may upgrade that unit without paying gold. If you have a warrior with free upgrades, you can upgrade him to an axeman or swordsman for free. Chariots can upgrade to horsemen and so on.

Can we talk about strategy for a second?

Grave passed on the Carter Planetary Earth map for me to 'upgrade' it to HiTM stuff, and I feel like I should play at least ONE epic game all the way through to learn how all the different resources fit into the game ecology.

However, I'm having a heckuva time getting any substantial 'winning' game going even on Noble! I used to play C3C on Emperor from time to time, and beat Monarch games a lot. I was pretty proud of myself when I took the step up to Prince on BTS a few weeks back . . . but with this mod I cannot seem to get into the early middle ages in the top tier, let alone in the lead!

I must have started half-dozen games now, initially as planetary size Terra2, but since I realized I couldn't cut the mustard, I've been trying Standard size a bit more. In short, the AI clearly understands this new ecology better than I do.

Can anybody offer some synthetic strategy points that will give me a point of departure for understanding how HiTM differs from vanilla BTS?

Also, I started working on that map, using my own approach, and I've sent a note to Grave seeking feedback, but I guess maybe he is busy. I cannot locate the WB.save file, where are those at?
