A Love Affair
“Love is the greatest danger to good moral young men and women. It leads them to stray from their paths set out by their parents and protectors. Such straying is dangerous for the stability of the society and the power of parents over their children. Duty and obligation are what is important in a marriage, not love.” –Kiet Srichapahn
They were both standing on the dock, in fact a private dock, awaiting the arrival of his father, the expected arrival of his father to all but him. Behind them were a notable number of attendants, bodyguards, courtiers and etc that came along with an Imperial presence. To be specific, a certain Imperial presence by the name of Princess Akara that had been plaguing him since that reception months ago he had really regretted going.
As much as he appreciated the presence of the lovely Princess as any young man would have, she was just unsettling. He had met her sorts in the colonies and outposts of the Empire, but he had never imagined in the heartland of the Empire, in the Imperial Family to boot! Headstrong, assertive and more then willing to throw her weight around, figuratively speaking of course, not literally.
With a single glance, she could silence even the most bureaucratic of the bureaucrats. He had seen her humble even Lord Dobias with a casual reference to her brother and mother. She wasn’t the archetypical Khmer young women of good family that men overseas had resigned themselves to in marriage, she was mesmerizing. He shook his head, no, that was tantamount to a death wish. The Imperial Family was in everything, while they may not be as visible as the Chinese Emperor, their influence permeated everywhere.
That brought him back to why he was here now. Waiting for his father in an unexpected trip to the Capital was surprising. His father hardly left their home in the Spice Isles, being dreadfully afraid of ships. It was strange if not downright amazing. An interesting question to pose to his father was to why he had come. Looking at Akara next to him, he failed to repress a shiver. She noticed and in a sly and coy voice asked a question.
“Don’t you know why your father is coming?” Her smile was an inviting, and dangerous one. It was the same one she would smile at someone who had offended her.
“Would it be incorrect to assume that your Highness knows why my father is coming?” He bit the bait.
“He received a marriage proposal about his son and came to negotiate the dealing of that said proposal, it is after all the prerogative of the father for his son’s familial businesses.” Was it just him or did he have a sudden queasy feeling in his stomach? He waited for her to continue and after a while she did.
“Well, you know my mother? She is really worried about my future marriage prospects, says my personality scares off tons of suitors even if I’m the daughter, sister and niece of Royalty. Since it seems like we hit off so well, she thought it would be a good idea for an appropriate union before anything else happens.” His stomach fell. Looking at the princess, his mind began wandering to certain inappropriate setting and areas. It must have shown as she smirked and tossed her hair. He gulped and she continued.
“You know, I really appreciate all the help you’ve given up in my less then savory actions. Your family’s connections have been very useful in building up the 公安. I admit, it’s likely I like you. You’re… a friendly person. I don’t think they’ll be any problems.”
“You’ve known about this all the while? And you’ve never told me?!?!?!”
“Marriage isn’t something that’s decided by the bride and groom Guntur. It’s the duty of the parents to choose a suitable spouse.” The words went in contrast as her eyes sparkled.
“I see there are certain exceptions to that rule obviously.”
“Of course, I am a member of the Imperial Khmer Family. You’ll be marrying into the Imperial Khmer Family of course, but as you have a younger brother it shouldn’t be an issue.”
As the ship slowly came to a stop, he braced himself. His father debarked in the gait of a self-confident Khmer noble dressed in all his finery and embraced his eldest son.
“What a lovely catch you’ve made. You make me proud,” were the words he whispered in his son’s ear. They came apart and his father bowed to Akara.
“Princess, it is always a pleasure to meet you.”
“You’re too kind Marquis, you can drop the Princess. I will soon be your daughter-in-law.”
“Of course, the Emperor’s will be done.”
