BirdNES 2: Forge of Empires -- The Animas Valley

Divine Intervention

Its quite amazing really, how golden rings glint even when there is no light for them to refract off of. In a world of seemingly engulfed in darkness, a small boy of no more than 14 years named Ore walked down a path of quicksilver. His footsteps rippled the substance as if it were a river, but something this precious could not be mere water. For years it seemed he walked this path through nothingness, driven by some will for greatness or perhaps just meaning. Whatever the reason, he just kept walking, and walking, and walking.

Then, in the middle of this blind eternity was a small golden light, and as Ore walked towards it, it grew larger, and larger and larger. Ore began to jog towards it, and then run, and finally he entered an inhuman sprint towards it. Finally, the path reached this light source. It was a large oval of pure gold. The polish of this oval reflect Ore's features back upon himself. He wore tattered rags. He stared at himself for what seemed like an eternity, and disgusted by what he saw, he tore off him clothes and let them fall into the darkness, where they combusted in a blue fire and disappeared.

Now naked, Ore looked upon his body in the golden mirror. His undefined body, his undeveloped features, they all disgusted him. In Oplury the boy cried to the infinite "You are not me! I do not accept this!". This would not due. And so he stared into this reflection and willed in to change. His hair grew blond and lengtehned to his shoulders. His body grew half a foot. His arms began to bulge with muscle. His face was no longer gaunt like a peasants, but full like a Gods. His stomach now rippled with abs like nuggets of pure gold. His man-sword lengthened and grew. His legs became swifter than the tigers. Ore looked triumphantly upon himself.

And from then the fabric of the mirror stretched, as one large hand stretched through as grasped the boy. Ore was pulled through this mirror and awoke face down in a sea of golden coins. He looked up upon Wellth, the god of Wealth, Patronage and Precious metals. This giant sat upon a throne as large as a mountain, made of twisted silver and gold. He looked as a man does, but made out of fluid gold, his eyes like giant emeralds and his knuckles deadly rubies. His mouth was studded with pearls and his nose a sapphire of the purest blue. He held in his hand a mighty silver staff, made a spear by the diamond atop it. Ore was awed into silence and immobility by this god.

"Rise, human" Wellth spoke inside of Ore's head. As if lifted by magic, Ore did as commanded.

"Do you like what you see?"

Ore had no answer, no control over his body in the presence of such granduer

"Of course you do, your desire brought it upon you. But this is but a taste of my power. Clear your mind's eye and gaze upon this future."

Ore willfully compiled, and his back arched as his body floated into mid-air. His mind filled with images of a vast land of walled cities and grand Cathedrals. A land of wealth and splendor, of prosperity and wealth. The image began to zoom upon the grandest city of them all. In Oplury written with the Kanese Alphabet, a Grand Arch proclaimed this was "Luxur, Capital of the Luxete of Opulenth". Ore's mind eye flew into view of a great palace that was one of the most magnificient things he had ever seen.

But the spell broke, and Ore slumped and plummeted to the coin-strewn floor. Paralyzed in a prostrate position, the words of Wellth once more filled his head.

"If you pledge to worship me and my children, then all of this shall be yours and your successors. You shall be the wealthiest people of Inowe[1] and your name shall be remembered for ever."

Ore lay there, and fought a mental war against his awe. Finally, the silence of eternity was broken by a forceful pledge.

"I swear that Wellth and his children shall be my only Gods, and that i shall reap the rewards of your patronage, your holiness"

The pearls of Wellth opened to reveal a flash of diamond teeth.

"Excellent. Now we begin...."

To be Continued....

[1] Place of Men in the language of the Gods. In Oplury it would actually be Humenth or something like that, but Wellth revealed this secret to Ore and it stuck

All of this takes place before the update... and will be continued.

So wait a second..........

My stats say I have 1/7, but Alex said you said we have 5/7?

I'm almost done with orders, but that changes things....

Explaination from anyone?

I spent 6, with contingencys and waffle potentially raising it to 8

The available spending stat, 1/7, shows the number of EP generated by your economy (1) and the EP in your treasury (7). For this first turn, I gave everyone 4 additional EP to spend for the 100 year turn and to get things moving. In a shorter turn, 8 rather than 12 EP would have been available.

Because having EP in your treasury is important to stability, I have strongly recommended not over spending this first turn. Once people see the effects of some of their spending this turn, you will be better able to decide how to spend next time. If we have a shorter turn (in years) for the next update, there, most likely, will be no bonus EP. Any unspent EP of the 12 available this turn will be banked in your treasury.

Orders Received:

OOC: I get this constant feeling that you're hurrying us! It's in our advantage to actually have a slower update so we can write more stories you know ;)

Just keeping you informed, Alex ;). I am quite busy with the orders I have received so far. I have to create all my files and the save structures, so many things will go faster after the first one. I am not in a hurry. This first one will be slow just because it is the first one and there are no cradle "themes" or meta-stories unfolding yet. ATM I am focused on the Manonash because they have so many orders in.

Everything in good time. :)

OOC: Did I also need to state that having Manonash go first gives us another bonus since we will know what effects people spending on stats will have? They're like our guinea pig and we reap their benefits ;)

I doubt the update will arrive before all orders for the whole NES are in... we will just get it a day or two earlier

Alex, IIRC, I have already done your stats for this update. :mischief:

My orders are coming, its just taking longer because as I work, I create more backstory and I get more excited by my culture.

I am gald so many of you are excited. I will do my best to live up to the challenge.

Alex, IIRC, I have already done your stats for this update. :mischief:

OOC: Splendid, in that case I will no longer have to mull over the difficult decision of what to spend my monies on then :mischief: For the greater good it shall be! :)

Out of curiosity, will the map change from the way it was in the original map when we expand into it?

So far I've only worked with the Manonash map and it will see some push back on the cloak, but not a lot. Mostly nations are expanding into areas already visible. Now upon re-reading your question, I am not sure I answered what you were asking.

Manonash Lurker: I believe Alex means will the map on page one change with the updates so we dont have to go back to the update to see an updated map.

If you all want another copy of the latest update map posted on page 1, I could do that.

Primer on the Gods of Materialism

In the beginning, there was only darkness. But with a bang, a shining gold light came into being. From this golden egg emerged the first God, the highest god and calling, Wellth

Wellth: God of Wealth, Patronage and Precious Metals. He resides inside his giant palace, the Sun. His floor is paved with gold coins, he sits upon a mountain sized throne of twisted gold and silver, and according to the Ore Epiphany, took the form of "a [giant] man....made out of fluid gold, his eyes like giant emeralds and his knuckles deadly rubies. His mouth was studded with pearls and his nose a sapphire of the purest blue. He held in his hand a mighty silver staff, made a spear by the diamond atop it."

Wellth inhabited the Universe, alone. For Wellth is all he needed. He grew lonely though, and he created Gold and Silver and the other precious metals. These fascinated him, gave him great happiness and for a millenia he lived, surrounded by his creations. But eventually he grew lonely once more. So he created 4 children out of only his power, for Wellth is all powerful and Wellth can do anything. The four children he created were beautiful. They were Vulva, Phalli, Neechee and Teste. Two Daughters and Two Sons, perfect symmetry and harmony.

Vulva:Goddess of Life and Fertility[see inserts for more info]

Phalli: God of War, Violence, Slavery[see inserts for more info]

Neechee: Goddess of Power, Will and Prestige[see inserts for more info]

Teste: God of Mining and Jewels[see inserts for more info]

At first, the children were small, and Wellth watched them with joy. They ran around his palace in joy and glee. But they began to grow older and restless, began to grow independent from Wellth and become people in their own right. For awhile, this adolescence amused and fascinated Wellth, but then they became adults. The Adult Gods became unruly and demanded someplace of their own. Wellth sought to ignore this problem. He was angered by the insolence of his children. In his anger, he began to wish they were dead. He hated them. He welled up power and irrationally thought to create a new child who would always be faithful. Wellth channeled his anger and brought his new child into being.

But what greeted Wellth was a hideous monstrosity. This child has grey and pockmarked skin and no nose, only a round mouth like a crater and black eyes. 'She' was clothed not in beautiful clothing like his other children, but in long black rags. 'She' has both male and female genitalia. 'Her' existence horrified and sickened Wellth. His anger quickly turned to disgust, and he cast out this outcast, whom he called Emo in the God language-meaning roughly the worst of the worst, not deserving of existence. Emo was banished from the palace, and spells were cast so she could never return. Wellth pushed her out of his memory and decided that he should refrain from telling his other children.

Emo:Goddess of Night, Disease and Death. 'She' is a hermaphrodite who makes her palace in the largest moon, known as Moon. 'She' is clothed in long black rags and has "grey and pockmarked skin and no nose, only a round mouth like a crater and black eyes."

As Wellth calmed down and collected himself, he decided that the best way to get his children out of his palace would be to give them their own, less grand palaces. So in space he created 4 palaces and his four children inhabited them. But Wellth was smart and devious, and he knew that he needed to keep some control over his children, lest they over throw him. So he created one final palace, the grandest of all. And in this palace, he vested great power, so that when they were there, his children would have power beyond their wildest dreams. This palace was Inowe...
