Astrology of Yexal
The people of Veerixura have always been fascinated by the sky, and the great city of Yexal had always been a center of their worship and study. One of the most notable developments of the Kaskii astrologers was the first proper calendar (the Yexalante). It was divided up into 9 Sokiz (month-like periods of time), each representing one of the Nine Great Vorixiz (constellations). Exactly how the delineations between the Sokiz are made remains a contentious issue- some believe that the phases of the moons should determine the switch, while others believed that the stars alone would decide- and went as far as to build a great series of pinnacles on the roof of a stepped temple in Yexal, aligning with astral phenomena in particular times to precisely delineate the end of on Sok and the beginning of another.
The Sok were divided as such:
Jexeravuu (1st Sok), named for the constellation of the Great Cat. Jexeravuu is a relatively cool and particularly wet time. The wild Jexeev brings oversees the enrichment of the world. Associated with bravery, but also unfriendliness.
Biidaravuu (2nd Sok), named for the constellation of the Daughter. It begins when Biida tames the Jexeev. Biida sows the seeds of the future crops of the year, then passes on her mantle to Teka. Associated with kindness, but also naivety.
Tekaravuu (3rd Sok), named for the constellation of the River Fish. In this time Teka returns from his downstream home, and plays in the upriver streams and pools. Associated with humour, but also laziness.
Vetzaravuu (4th Sok), named for the constellation of the Plumed Bird. The climate warms and dries around this time. Vetza takes the mantle of Teka and reigns through the time when the birds put on their shows in the forest. Associated with beauty, but also vanity.
Katzelravuu (5th Sok), named for the constellation of the Hummingbird. Katzel takes over Vetza’s position, and brings peace back to the forests. Associated with wit, but also cruelty.
Cheekaravuu (6th Sok), named for the constellation of the Spear-Thrower. Cheeka forces out Katzel, and the climate begins to grow cool. Associated with strength, but also stupidity.
Leeravuu (7th Sok), named for the constellation of the Flower. Leeravuu rises to prominence around harvest time. Associated with loyalty, but also weakness.
Salkravuu (8th Sok), named for the constellation of the Snake. In this time, the climate becomes cooler still and the world is at its most barren. Associated with wisdom, but also greed.
Varavuu (9th Sok), named for the constellation of the Crown. Var casts out Salk, and announces the start of a new Ta. The world grows warmer and wetter. Associated with wealth, but also wastefulness.
As time would show, however, the development of this calendar would only be the first of many feats...
