Blood on the Field of Lilies

The Empire of Taliese has two major colleges: Besangueux and Champilême. Both have been around for several centuries (though Champilême will be quick to remind that it is several hundred years older). As seats of significant magical power, both colleges have naturally become politically powerful and have influenced Taliesean history greatly. Their decision to put aside their rivalry to support the Hero was a significant turning point in the rebellion and contributed greatly to his victory.

Education has been standardized to an extent; students generally enter in their late teens to early twenties. They pursue a three-year course of study and at the end of their education, graduates are expected to participate in The Grand Prix. In times of peace, it is an event that brings together all of the colleges of Magnolia to have students participate in team and individual competitions of magic. Top finishers in events are awarded medals, an honor of great distinction in the wizarding world.

Students are also expected to play Tourmort. A proud tradition of Colleges throughout Magnolia, schools put together teams of anywhere between twenty and a hundred mounted riders (team size is agreed to prior to the game), armed with a long mallet and are aiming for a small ball in an attempt to hit the ball through the goal for a point. The first team to ten points wins. Other than that, there are few other rules or limitations, though most schools include a rule penalizing the intentional killing of a player. It is a popular, beloved sport that can draw large crowds, and playing the sport is considered to be incredibly prestigious. In fact, it is so beloved, that even the Tyrant did not ban the sport during his rule, being an avid fan.

The social event of the year is the annual match between Champilême and Besangueux held in Clermont, coming on their 388th match; Champilême won the last match, which has given it the overall lead of 144-143.

Collège du Champilême
Champilême was established during the Age of Towers, making it one of the oldest universities in Eastern Magnolia and the oldest in Taliese today. It is a college dedicated to the revival of lost and ancient magic, to rediscover, in their words, humanity’s lost heritage and what lies at its heart: the First Magic.

To do so, Champilême believes that one must first understand the fundamentals of magic, believing them to be the longest standing traditions in the field and necessary to further plunging into the secrets of the past. They will then push students to master the deep traditions of their field, including a specialization, and how to probe the secrets of the ancient past. Students graduate with their skills well-polished, both magically and socially. It is a rather elitist, rigorous school, but one cannot deny the skill of a Champilême graduate.

Proud school traditions include “The Running” for first years, where the day they are allowed to ride horses, they are required to run from the Great Hall to the stables, where waiting third years riding horses attack them with sticks; “The Combat”, which is where other students watch the fights between second years for their final,; and “The Raid” where the girls and boys attempt to break into one another’s dorms and throw all of the clothes they can find into the lake. Other traditions include decorating the school for the Savior’s Day, and Founder’s Day celebrations where the students participate in a scavenger hunt and then throw an unsuspecting professor into the lake. The school also encourages the development of mentor relationships; older female students give younger male students sweets and protection from the older boys, in exchange for the boys doing their chores, carrying their books, and tidying their rooms. There are other traditions at the school too of course, but those remain to be discovered by the students who go there.

Entrance Exams consist of three written exams, covering Magical History, Magical Theory, and fundamentals of their magical discipline, two long form essays, including a personal essay on what inspired them to choose Champilême, one practical examination in their magical discipline, and a dinner with the headmistress, faculty, and other prospective students (to ensure they are of proper upbringing).

First Years primarily focus on Linguistics, Classics, Magical Theory, Theology, History, Fundamentals, Physical Fitness, and, after their first semester, Horsemanship. First years are rarely found outside of class, chores, the dorms, or the library, and are generally barred from extracurriculars except under unusual circumstances. At the end of the year, they will take finals, mostly in long form essay.

Second Years move on into Translation for Magical Texts, Advanced Magic in their discipline, Advanced Magical Theory, and Magical Combat as their main courses. The school attempts to ensure they have a good mix of practical schools but also that they are prepared to further the cause of rediscovering ancient magic. Many look forward to the tournament at the end of the year where they get to fight with their peers in front of the school, but their other finals include a mock translation of an advanced ancient work, in preperation for their Third Year.

Third Years are expected to rediscover a “lost” magic. At the start of the year, they are given a text, dating back to at least the Age of Glories, that has never before been translated into a modern language. They are responsible for, by the end of the year, translating that work, and performing the magic written on it, thereby reintroducing it to the modern world. They will also be taking classes in advanced magical combat and, as part of a final, are expected to last thirty minutes in a duel with a professor.

Like all students throughout Magnolia, students are required to participate in “The Grand Prix”. Graduating with at least one medal earns a degree “with honors”, and graduating with three medals, including one gold, earns a degree “cum laude”, a major point of pride. To put in perspective, since the Age of Eagles, every Grand Secretary of State(except for one), Cardinal, and Chief Judge has been a graduate of Champilême, all of whom earned their degree cum laude, and that same distinction can be bestowed on half of the Marshals of Taliese.

Académie de Besangueux

The Académie de Besangueux was founded in the middle of the Age of Swords by the legendary headmaster Birague. Birague had traveled extensively throughout Magnolia and even to the edges of the eastern continent and found most colleges to be backward-looking, only focused on finding “The First Magic”. He thought it odd; had not magic advanced significantly? Was magic not greater now than it had been five hundred years ago? He believed that magic’s applications had only scratched the surface and that the way to improve society was with forwarding thinking magical research: a heresy to all other colleges.

The school was quite successful though in its innovations and soon became world-renowned for the techniques and discoveries pouring out from its walls. But the wizards of Besangueux have always strived for ever greater discoveries, which sometimes runs them afoul of other authorities, and the school was nearly shut down after an incident with an attempt at human transmutation. Besangueux sees itself as a chivalric order of education, and in its mission, they are very open and egalitarian among its members.

Proud school traditions include the “Festival of Colors”, where students engage in a turf paint war, the ”Festival of Flowers” where students attempt to create large floral sculptures, and “The Grand Fair”, which includes a display of a variety of magical techniques, items, and then a large melee between students. All three are a source of pride for locals when no incidents of great magnitude occur. Less...prideful is that of the Bacchanal, a wild party of feasting, drinking, and a giant bonfire, around which the environment is rife with...mingling. There are other traditions at the school too of course, but those remain to be discovered by the students who go there.

Entrance Exams consist of a series of magical challenges where there is no initially obvious answer. An instructor and a student sit in a room, one on one, and the tests are administered in rapid succession; the instructor is testing not only their creative thinking skills but also their ability to think on their feet.

Courses generally involve expanding one’s mind when it comes to magical usage, having students think in creative ways of how to use magic. Fundamentals are generally ignored and professors are very hands on in their instruction. Existing magic is of course taught, but then students are encouraged to think of various applications for those spells, and practice. Second years are introduced to a variety of different electives and are expected to devote themselves to a major in their third year.

First Year Finals involve being stranded for three months in an isolated environment, using nothing but magic to survive. Past examinations have taken place in mountain ranges, forests, ruins, and other deserted locations. Mortality and failure rate is, relatively, low.

Second Year Finals are a group examination. Students are put in a team with those who use different types of magic and are given a task to accomplish, usually dangerous and always quite difficult. Success is not necessarily the goal in the examinations. Five years ago, students were sent to reach the capital of the Emperor in the East and report back on what they found; they have yet to return. In the past few years, students attempted to tame a griffin and another they attempted to traverse a ruin guarded by a manticore, both of which ended with a disastrously high mortality rate. Undeterred, Headmaster Darcy desperately wants to bring back the final he took some twenty years ago, the one where his entire class, except for himself, perished: attempting to bring back a dragon egg.

Third Year Finals and indeed, third-year courses, are non-structured. The only requirement a student has is that they must come up with a feat of magic that is as of yet unseen. This can be a new spell, a new elixir, an advancement in beastial studies, anything that furthers the study of magic! They will perform for the Headmaster and the assembled faculty, who will either accept or reject the feat. If accepted, they will be awarded a degree!

Like all students throughout Magnolia, students are required to participate in “The Grand Prix”. Unlike Champilême, Besangueux does not offer degree advancements based on performance, but students who perform particularly well have been known to receive a parting gift from the staff. After the Grand Prix, students are encouraged to leave to experience the world, for at least a few years, and are invited to return at any time thereafter to further the cause of discovering new fields of magic, equipped with the school’s extensive research facilities.

Most graduates of Besangueux often continue scholarly pursuits, but not all do; some have been quite successful in the military and in government, including the Besangueux graduate Montmorency who, as Grand Secretary, who ushered in the Taliesean Empire and the Age of Lilies.

Particularly knowledgeable and accomplished individuals past schooling age may be invited to the school for a sabbatical, to engage in research, teaching, and learning.

The Cruel Blood Oath

What kind of man launches himself into battle over and over again, risking his home and his life to face the evil knight?

I knew when we first met, that it would be a love that would last for eternity.
I know that you believe yourself to be just, but in my deepest heart, I wonder about the children of our enemies.

I hurt you when we were close, but being distant hurt you more.
Do they not believe themselves to be just as righteous? Do they not love their family and children just as much?

I've finally found a place I could call my own on this battlefield.
Our hearts were all given by God above. Perhaps only thing worth fighting for in this world is love.

A place where I can forever be for you, yet be eternally distant.

The Hero Emperor, Roland d'Autriche (M, 34)-Known these days only as “The Hero Emperor”, Roland is considered the first Hero in well over a millenia. Though his reign has been close to disastrous, the goodwill among the people for his victory over the Tyrant will never disappear. Uses Elemental Magic.

Princess Riliane d'Autriche (F, 9)-The daughter, allegedly, of the Hero Emperor Roland. To hear Lord von Ascania tell it, she was found on the streets of the Free Marches, living as a common street urchin. The story to many seems highly suspect, though many admit she does look quite similar to the Hero. Having her adjust to court life has been a...challenge. Uses Dark Magic, as her mother did...

Reinhard von Ascania (M, 27)-Warden of the South, Bourtaigne and Clermont, which leaves him with little to do due to its relative safety. Even before the rebellion Reinhard squired for the Hero. He is, with the Emperor’s decline in health, contender for one of the Kingdom’s two greatest knights, along with Gaston d’Ribe. He is legendary for his friendly demeanor that can quickly turn to wrath, his loyalty to the Hero, and his unparalleled skill with his dragon blade.

One of his greatest regrets is that he could not protect the Hero during the fight with the Tyrant, and took the Hero’s (alleged) command that he find his daughter to heart, going himself instead of sending a search team. He is slavishly devoted to the Hero’s daughter and his own liege, Riliane. Some fear though that Reinhard’s trusting nature and his overwhelming desire to find the Hero’s daughter may have been exploited though, and that the girl they see is nothing more than a trick designed to fool one of the Empire’s greatest knights.

Gaston d’Ribeau (M, 63)The greatest chevalier Pentherve has ever known, at least, on the field of battle. Gaston is a highly accomplished warrior, and his lineage is second to none. He was once an unwilling captain to a Tyrant he served only due to his feudal duties. He dueled the Hero Emperor and was the only man to defeat him in battle. However, he was so overwhelmed by the Hero’s passion and his cause, that he defected to fight for him. He has greatly mourned the decline of a man he saw as a son, and is determined to see Roland’s ideals to the end...no matter what it takes.

He is the Warden of the East, responsible for Pentherve and Nerlandais.

"Erza have painted the walls once more."

"I've noticed."

.....................................................................................................................................................

Conversations in the Lumiere household usually tends to start out like this. "Hello, dearest, have you noticed that somebody have done something noticeable today?"

And then someone either affirms or denies it, and ends the conversation there.

It is not a very exciting household, unfortunately.

.......................................................................................................................................................

"Hello father, will you be at home tonight, or will you be going out on yet another one of your many, many excursions to slaughter women and children of the mountain tribes?"

Mother starts to protest, breaking the tradition, but is quickly cut off by the father.

"I don't want any defense of these accursed raiders against my people in my household. But yes, I will be gone tonight."

Conversation ends there.

............................................................................................................................................................

Occasionally, conversations happen amidst action.

A family member walks in on another doing something remarkable, or perhaps they are doing something remarkable themselves. They converse for a short time. And then the conversation stops.

............................................................................................................................................................

"Victor, for the love of God, please remember to put up your damned guard. I don't want to hear that you lost a limb because you forgot to properly hold a sword. It would shame the family for generations."

"I see, father. I understand."

Conversation ends there, although training doesn't.

.................................................................................................................................................................

Not even children are safe from the lack of proper excitements.

It's somewhat wondrous that they grew up so well at all.

But then again, perhaps they didn't.

..................................................................................................................................................................

"I want to be a great, chivalrous, and honorable knight, like Emperor Roland!" a little girl proclaims.

"I'm sure you will, Allie."

And then the father goes back to reading and the little girl goes back to drawing on a stone floor.

....................................................................................................................................................................

When he was young, Gabriel was a great, chivalrous, and honorable knight.

But the war and the fighting never stopped even as his accomplishments grew. Nay, with every bit of fame came more challengers to his rule, attracted to his glory and seeking to make it their own.

So he took their heads off. The next challenger fled when he saw the display of his predecessors bodies.

An idea took root in the young knight's heart.

......................................................................................................................................................................

"Will you do something about it? The girl is becoming uncontrollable. I worry for her."

"No, let her do what she wants."

...........................................................................................................................................................................

What would they say, even if they were willing to be less laconic?

Hello dear, I know that I have murdered hundreds of family who loved each other very much, but I would like to let you know that I did it all for you and that I love you very much.

Oh, that's sweet, dear. Would you like some meat pie? The new chef complains endlessly that there is nothing to work with here in the mountains, but hopefully he will learn more recipes soon.

Hey father, I know you think you are doing me a favor by ignoring me when I do things like painting your study wall, but for once could you screw off with Montcastel and comment on what I'm doing?

No dear, I'm too socially awkward to admit that I'm too old fashioned to really understand your art and that I think that you'll make a few ladies-in-waiting faint from shock if you ever exhibited them to the riverland pansies. Actually, why don't you go do that. That sounds amazing.

Dear, don't give her any ideas.

Father, I know you think you are doing right with this image of fear, but sometimes I wonder what legacy I will be walking into in the future.

I'm sorry, I thought I knew what I was doing.

It's alright. I'll do what I can.

Hey dad! You would never guess what I saw today from the castle rooftop.

Damnit Levy, I thought I told you not to go up there.

A gryphon! Nurse told me that it was a good omen.

It is indeed!

Hey dad, are you a hero?

...........................................................................................................................................................
"Why are we fighting? What's the point of this? They'll just keep coming! There is no end! There is no end!"

"I don't know, why don't you ask them?"
............................................................................................................................................................
A longer conversation with a person out of the household.

"So why are you fighting? I thought that you might refuse to get involved in this war."

"I don't know," Gabriel says after a while. "I guess because I like it."

"You... like what now?"

"The war. The fighting. Perhaps I just couldn't resist the thought of going into battle again in a proper war against my fellows."

"You... like this?"

"I can give you a thousand excuses. It is for the realm. It is for Montcastel. It is because of my duties. It is so that Victor does not have to. But in the end, I believe that the only reason why I keep doing it is because I want to. And if I want to, it must mean I enjoy it."

"That's a strange way to think about things. You almost sound as if you don't know what you are doing. Wouldn't you feel better if people sang praises of your victories, rather than criticize it?"

"If you say so, my lord. I wish you a thousand victories on the battlefield. May ten thousand bards sing of your name for generations."

.....................................................................................................................................

"I'm back."

"Welcome home."

Sometimes that's all the praise you need.

House of Croy (alt. House DeCroy)

House motto:
"Gold ennobles."

Dominant magic:
Alchemy
. DeCroy originate from a once prominent line of enchanted elixir and alloy makers that once stood for ennoblement, but failed to reach the requirements and since then had descended into obscurity.

Background:
Governor
. For several generations, DeCroy were small-time bureaucrats, stewards, and scribes, until the Imperial conquest of the Nerlandais from the Free Marches created the demand for capable administrators. This sudden propelled Gustave DeCroy to to a position of power, as he moved from one thankless administrative position to another, culminating with receiving a long-desired gentry status and receiving some personal land holdings in the land desired by no prestigious house of the Empire.

Starting location:
Nerlandais
.

Culture:
Theleiseanized Marcher
. A Thurian craftsman from the city of Crooy, Karles der Crooy was the founder of the house, however his name was edited out of the family history and the official story of DeCroy starts with his son Clotair, who moved to Clermont before the conquest of Nerlandais to work on a lucrative contract in a local tinmakers’ guild. It was he who altered his ways and manners (and, eventually, his family name) to better fit into the chauvinist Theleisean society, educating his children to speak Theleisean and act Theleisian. Today’s house of DeCroy has virtually no trace of its Thurian legacy, except the pale skin and fiery red hair of the most of the members of the Croy bloodline. This proved to be a blessing and a curse when Gustave DeCroy was assigned to his first position as a ducal steward in Nerlandais, as he was perceived by the locals either as the most Marcher of all Teleisean administrators - or as a turncoat and a cultural convert.

Gustave DeCroy (38 years old)
Well-educated and mathematically capable, Gustave DeCroy spent twenty years of his life serving the Imperial crown in various bureaucratic positions, eventually raising to a position of prominence that culminated in him receiving a hereditary gentry status with a land holding in Nerlandais. His childhood was full of abuse and trauma, as his mother, a widow since he could remember himself, was a drunken tyrant with a holier-than-thou attitude. Years of her tyranny left quite a few emotional scars on the capable boy, who developed a strong sense of disdain for the opposite gender and, some say, attraction for his own. Eventually, the mother passed away (people claim, not without his passive help, as Gustave failed to provide her with even most basic medical help and comfort during her period of sickness). In the early days of his career, Gustave got married to a girl from a respectable urban family, but she died four months later (he says she was bearing his child). After burying her, Gustave never married (or, in fact, was not even seen in a woman’s company again), but some claim that his image of a “grieving widower” was but an excuse to not share a bedroom with a woman ever again. With his career growth, a capable young message boy from his townhall became his protege and eventually was formally adopted into the family. Yet again, omnipresent rumors emerged that the young man is loved indeed - albeit, not as a son, but a lover. Whatever it means, to his subordinate and his suzerains, Marquise Gustave DeCroy is known as a highly capable financier and deal-maker with a quiet charisma and a can-do attitude.

Guy DeCroy (born Guy Batelle) (19 years old)
Guy DeCroy was born Guy Batelle in one of the slums of Clermont. In fact, his origin as a brothel’s kid makes it highly likely that Batelle was also not his true last name. Still, the boy was known for his sharp wits, quick hands and natural charm since he remembers himself, gradually finding his way into more legitimate professions. At 12, he became a message boy for the city’s townhall, eventually leading him to meet Gustave DeCroy at the age of 16. The mentor-protege relationship developed quite soon between the two, and some claim that their appreciation of each other surpassed even that. Either way, with Gustave’s assignment to Nerlandais, the two were supposed to be separated, but Gustave eagerly adopted the youngster and took him to the March. Despite the clear favoritism that brought young Guy to his unexpected position of lower nobility, he is known as a quite capable (and, all in all, just lovely) companion, whose socialite reputation does a lot to improve DeCroy reputation as a reserved and brooding bunch.

Estelle DeCroy (27 years old)
Estelle DeCroy was barely five years old when her mother died and still blames Gustave for her death. The irony is, having been shielded from the mother’s sadistic anger by Gustave himself, she merely took from the old lady her passionate (albeit, hypocritical) piety and her unruly temperament. In her early years, when Gustave was the main breadwinner for the family, Estelle was assigned as an understudy to a local monastery, where she learned the basics of theology and writing well beyond mere literacy. In fact, with her skills in poetry and calligraphy quite appreciated, Estelle considered becoming a nun for a while. Eventually, her brother’s assignment to Nerlandais put an end to these contemplations, and Estelle abandoned her vow of celibacy to, hopefully, extend the Croy bloodline into the next generation. Her suppressed disdain for her brother and his “sinful” ways paints every moment of their interaction - yet, blood is blood, and Estelle puts up with Gustave for the betterment of the House.

The Funeral

The entire mood of the camp was dour and downcast. Leonard's sacrifice had bought them time, but it had also deeply shaken morale. Of the major commanders of the rebellion, Leonard was the most beloved. He was good humored, finding what joy he could in the rough circumstances of their ramshackle campaign. He was kind to his soldiers but firm as well. And he was comfortable in his skin, completely at peace with himself and the choices he made. He carried himself without fear, for he did not doubt his cause. For the rebels, who had lived in a tyrannical system so long fear was a habit, it was very reassuring.

For Gaston the loss was more personal. Once the man had been a friend, when they both squires looking to earn their spurs. He remembered a golden haired older youth, generous with compliments, and intolerant of harassment, who even in his criticisms showed a faith that others could not help but try and live up to. They had been close then. Leonard had taken Gaston under his wing and resolved to show him the finer pleasures of being a chevalier. In addition to swordplay, Gaston learned the art of cards and dancing. Du Lac's reputation opened up invitations to parties from every corner of the capital, and he would find himself dancing with the finest ladies in the Empire. He had been Du Lac's second in his duel with his future wife's then fiance (It was quite the scandal, but since no one died and the families involved held no hard feelings, the matter was dropped, and the emperor's court sighed because it was so romantic, how expected from the descendants of Lancelot). Alas, Leonard had retreated from the court several years in his knighthood, choosing to spend his time in his estate. The last time they had spoken before the war, some three decades ago, his old friend had said, "The longer I stay in this court, the more cruelty I see, and the more I turn my eyes from. I fear one day looking in the mirror, and no longer seeing a man but a worm, blind to everything but comfort. The emperor will not listen to my entreaties on lowering his taxes? Very well then, I will head home and aid my people in surviving them"

Gaston shook his head to clear them of the memories. It was the living who needed him now, not the dead. He sees Tristan holding vigil over the makeshift grave marker created for Leonard Du Lac, and walks over to him.

"I'm sorry for your loss. Your father was a great man." he offers his condolences. The words are all wrong, too flat, too lifeless, too banal, but Gaston is not close to this young man. He is not a family friend. Even what little he offers might be overstepping his bounds.

For a moment he imagines his life, if he had chosen to maintain his friendship with Leonard, if he had been less tied to the emperor. It is too easy to imagine laughter and hunting in the gorgeous forests surrounding and teasing Leonard for being disgustingly taken with his wife more than a decade into their marriage. Gaston stops those thoughts before they can go further. The dead cannot carry the regrets of the living, nor can amends be made to them.

Tristan replies, "Don’t be. My father would not have been. He often said that a heroic death was its own reward.”

“And what do you think” Gaston asks pointedly.

Tristan falls silent, letting a morose and still moment pass between them before saying, “My father joined this rebellion because he believed the very act of fighting the tyrant mattered, even if victory wasn’t achieved, that the act of caring mattered. I don’t know about that, but I do believe this - my father deserves to be avenged. I will see this through til the end just so I can get one look in Valerien’s eyes before a sword is driven through his heart. I don’t care if vengeance is poison for the soul, right now it is the only thing that drives the engine of my heart.”

Gaston looks at him now, really looks at him, and he sees pieces of Leonard in the determination in his eyes, and in the anger as well. Except where Leonard chose to hold onto anything worth fighting for, Tristan is lost in his grief. And Gaston knows what he must do. He cannot change his relationship with Leonard now, but he can help his son, be a guide and a mentor. There is something in Tristan, a spark of something that can be called heroic, if only it was to be nurtured. Gaston would see it grow.

“I am creating a group of the best chevaliers to be a part of the Hero’s guard,” he says, and then continues, “I would like to see you a part of it.”

“Will this group be there when the Hero faces the emperor?”

“Almost certainly”

“Then I accept. My blade and my oath belong to the cause fully and without reserve. I have buried my father, now it is time to avenge him”.

House Name: Abbandonato
Magic: Light
Background: Agent
Perferred Location: Orlandy

The Abbandonato family is an ancient noble house, one of the Latirean families that were entrusted with land before the Taleisean conquest, and managed to keep some of their estate as it was incorporated into the growing empire. However, it was clear the land that the family was able to keep was only because it was absolutely undesirable for even the most pitiful Taleisean chevalier; utter, perhaps even literal, backwoods away from the main centers of farming and commerce. The rough, forested land meant the Abbandonato family lived closer to the peasants than they did to their foreign nobility, but they remained prideful in their noble status regardless.

The lack of opportunity in the court meant that the Abbandonato family relied on less savory jobs in order to survive. The family has had an on-and-off relationship with the crown, acting as spies for Clermont. Having refused to assimilate to Taleisean culture, the Abbandonatos were useful as eyes and ears in Latirean circles, whether that would be in Orlandy itself or in some of the free kingdoms to the west. However, the family fortunes would turn for the better when they sided with the Hero against the Tyrant, and was rewarded with a restoration of many of their ancestrial lands among those who stuck with the Tyrant to the end.

Romina Abbandonato (39, F)
Clever (2)
Wise (2)
Attractive (2)
Friendly (1)
Idealist (0)
Homosexual (-1)

Romina Abbandonato is the current head of the house, and the woman to have singlehandingly put the Abbandonato name on the map. The second child and first daughter of Fedele, she was always intended to simply be the child to marry off for some blood pact with another house. However, with Giovanni's sudden disappearance in her teenage years, she was suddenly placed in the awkward role of becoming the primary heir to the Abbandonato family. Romina, however, stepped up to the plate, and started to put her fate into her own hands

Romina elected to support the struggling family by offering her services to the crown as a spy. Romina, always people-smart and pleasing to the eye, found herself naturally excelling in the art of subterfuge. She was especially effective in charming the wives of the men she was supposed to spy on, a role she took with such an enthusiastic rigor that it would have likely been scandalous to Clermont if she already wasn't working under the table anyways. Sometimes, the lady would even catch onto her true intentions, which were always the best jobs to Romina. Otherwise, being a woman, it simply meant both lord and lady kept their guard down around her, which was all she needed.

Romina became one of the Tyrant's most relied upon agents in Orlandy, and she made well sure that any form of treason was put to an end before it fermented into a rebellion. However, the fatal mistake of the Tyrant was sending her on a mission to spy on the Hero. While Romina always knew that the King was no saint, the sneering nobles, the greedy burghers, the corrupt clergy; Romina thought they all got what they ultimately deserved. But the Hero was different. He wasn't rebelling because he wanted land, power, or money. No, he talked about lofty goals of freedom, of justice, of righting the great wrongs of society. And the Hero was a simple man; she knew this was no ruse, but what he genuinely believed.

After building a rapport with Roland, she confessed to him her true relationship with the Crown, about being a spy, about being asked to feed infomation about him and his troop movement to the Tyrant. However, she further confessed that she held no more loyalty to the Tyrant, and had been feeding him false information for a while. Roland sagely nodded at Romina's confession, and welcomed her aboard his revolution. Romina would remain in the shadows still, only now a double agent for the Hero.

Once the war concluded, Romina was rewarded for her services by having much of her family's old land restored back to their control. More specifically, placed under her control, quite explicitly so by Roland's decree, so that her recently uncovered elder brother couldn't claim it as his right being the firstborn son (not that she suspected that he would). Since this considerable land grant, the Abbandonato family has found itself on the forefront of Orlandian politics, which Romina's time as a spy uniquely prepared her to navigate through. However, rumors of her suspected trysts with ladies across the province, a rumor she never had the opportunity to deny in the past, have started to come back to bite her...

Giovanni Abbandonato (42, M)
Heroic (4)
Just (1)
Moral (0)
Cynic (0)
Distant (-1)
Rebellious (-2)

Romina's elder (and only) brother, by all accounts, he should have been the heir to the house, being the first-born and male. However, as a youth, Giovanni grew disillusioned with life in the Abbandonato estate. Perhaps it was over the chauvinistic attitude of his Taleisean counterparts that constantly belittled him, perhaps it was over an articulated hatred of the lifestyle of a spy, or perhaps it was just teenage angst, but, one day, after a large verbal fight with their father Fedele, Giovanni simply ran away from home, taking nothing with him but a horse and a sword. For fifteen years, no one in the Abbandonato family heard of him again, and he was simply presumed dead by everyone.

However, in actuality, Giovanni simply changed his name and rode out to the kingdoms of the west, where he eventually joined a mercenary company known as the Blue Falcons. He hid his noble lineage from the mercenaries, and joined simply as a recruit. Over the years, he became an accomplished fighter, and through his skill and a lot of luck, eventually found himself in command of the entire company. As its captain, he became legendary not only for his own personal skill on the battlefield, but by the rigorous set of morals that he followed. He abhorred the more vicious elements of war such as looting (even if he realized that it wasn't completely avoidable), and always fought with a sense of chivarlic honor that almost betrayed his noble heritage.

However, as much as he tried to better himself and not fall from moral grace as so many people he knew in the field have, it made him grew bitter about the state of the world as a whole. Good men died ugly, brutal deaths, while the scum of the earth grew rich off their corpses. The only thing that kept him going through these years was that realizing that home was frankly even worse: he wasn't cut out to be a spy, and at least people respected him out here, caring more about his merit than station at birth.

When word came back that Taleise was heading into a civil war, he wanted no part of it. Despite getting numerous offers for lucrative work, on both the sides of the Hero and the Tyrant, he remained steadfast on a refusal to return home. He would take much lower offers to remain in the west and the north, simply so that he didn't have to deal with dad or his sisters again. Of course, his lieutenants grew suspicious of him passing over what looked like to be the largest conflict in their lifetimes, and started to press him on the issue.

Fearing a mutiny over the issue, Giovanni eventually acquiesced to their demands and looked into joining the civil war, rather than admitting to them his past out of shame. While he on paper liked what the Hero was saying, he was far too jaded to believe that he actually meant what he said, and was actually almost ready to sign up for a noble siding with the Tyrant, who was offering the most money out of everyone. During these negotiations, he let out his prior noble heritage out to the lord he was in communication in, if only to secure some of the money would go to his ailing house. It was the least he could do in leiu of ever showing his face there again.

However, the right birds whispered, and gossip of a secret Orlandian noble-captain became the hot intrigue in the camps of both sides. To Romina's horror, she eventually realized it had to have been Giovanni. She hurridly tried to get in contact with him, to steer him into the side of the Hero, or at the very least, not to fight for the Tyrant. Giovanni very reluctantly agreed to meet with her informally. There, she admitted to him her secret loyalties to Roland, and desperately tried to get him to his side. However, to her horror, she found out that Giovanni already took the contract before even seeing her. Of course he didn't want to fight his sister, but his and his company's honor would be on the line if he suddenly switched sides so brazenly. However, Giovanni promised her he'd try to do what he could to get out of the contract, realizing that, regardless of his own feelings, he saw the faith his sister put into Roland, and that meant more than any amount of gold did to him.

Fortunately for the siblings, the war ended very soon afterwards. Giovanni participated in the final, sixteen day battle, where he, as his contract said, fought for the Tyrant. However, when his benefactor died partway into the battle, he used the excuse to disengage, since he argued he owed his loyalty to that particular liege and not the Tyrant's forces as a whole. That night, when everyone returned to the camp, Romina helped escort him and his men to the other side, and he started to fight under the Hero's colors the very next day, with a new contract to serve his sister in hand.

After the war, Giovanni retired from the Blue Falcons, deciding that now his family needed him more than ever, now that they suddenly had actual land and a need for a marshal. He tried to reconcile with Fedele, but both could tell it wasn't complete, and Giovanni still didn't feel entirely at home in Orlandy. Romina tried to give him space to recover from his self-imposed exile, but even five years, he seems as ready to open up as he was when he first returned...

Durante Nervetti (35, M)
Artistic (+1)
Amoral (0)
Tempermental (-1)
Addicted (-3)

Much like the Abbandonato, the Nervetti is another Latirean noble house that has existed in Orlandy since before the conquest. Unlike the Abbandonato, the Nervetti did not participate in the civil war meaningfully one way or the other, and thus remain largely obscure and irrelevant to this day. Durante was always the black sheep of his own family, having a major drinking problem, which occasionally got violent. Durante is largely isolated in his own world of painting; He's actually not bad at it, and possibly could have been a respectable artist in the Taleisean court if he wasn't too busy spending most of his time sober trying to get drunk.

Romina knew of him and his family for years; she was never really close with any of them, but they were in the same boat in terms of relative wealth and prestige, and they were nice enough. Durante in specific could get way too temperamental for her tastes, especially when drunk, but she could definitely see the passion in his eyes whenever he was able to talk about whatever project he was working on, which was adorable and endearing to her in its own way. More importantly, Romina could tell he honestly had no higher aspiration in life other than drinking and painting, which kind of made him a bit of a useful idiot for her.

Romina enjoyed her life as a bachelorette, and in a perfect world she would have preferred to stay as one. However, the pressure of becoming a Marquis, the need of a heir, and the unsavory rumors of her sexual orientation all conspired she on the surface married someone. Not only that, but to keep the land in her own family's name, she'd need to find someone willing to marry matrilinearly, which was not an easy task in itself. Luckily, not only was the Nervetti family now on a much lower social standing to the Abbandonato family, but Durante was already considered "unmarriable" by themselves anyways. Durante himself was convinced to go along with it over the promise of more funds for his booze and art supplies.

And so, Durante and Romina married shortly after the latter was made a Marquis. Due to the matrilinear nature of the marriage, Romina did not take his name (and a man taking his wife's name was simply unthinkable), and any kids they would have would be an Abbandonato. They consummated their marriage, but otherwise Romina leaves him to his own devices. Durante has expressed desire to have more kids (especially a son), a fact that somewhat unnerves Romina due to his tendencies to get violent when drunk. But so far, nothing has come out of it. Yet.

Luigia Abbandonato (4, F)
??? (IDK if children under the age of five even have traits)

The first and so far only child between Romina and Durante, Luigia is the presently assumed heir of the Abbandonato family, if something should happen to Romina. While Luigia is proof that Romina consummated her marriage (and was possibly conceived entirely for that purpose), Romina seems utterly disinterested in having more children, and it doesn't completely counteract the rumors of homosexuality on her part

Just to make it clear that I didn't miss something. Do we know when the orders are due, or is the game still in the signup/setup phase? Fine either way, I'm just being busy and paranoid.

UPDATED: Got my answers. Ignore the question. As a compensation for you reading this post, here's a fun fact from IRL:

The only wild herd of Dülmen ponies extant today is owned by the Dukes of Croÿ.

History: House Verniseul was once a house filled with collaborators and supporters of the Tyrant. Vivien was a hostage and kept under guard close to the Tyrant to secure his family's loyalty. As the Hero rose up and guard slackened, Vivien seized the opportunity to escape with the aid of his dark magic. He turned to aid the Hero (mostly due to personal animosity with the cruel Tyrant's lieutenants) and was ultimately rewarded with inheriting his family's land while the rest of his house was killed or exiled.

House Cuimilt
Magic:
Ritual
Background: Chevalier
Preferred Location: Seonville
Motto: All Debts Are Paid

Lord Naevus Cuimilt: (38, M)
Beloved (+4): Lord Cuimilt is famous across Montcastel for his selfless actions during the rebellion and has a great deal of sympathy from the peasantry for the deaths of almost his entire family at the hands of the Emperor's men. Since he's been at the aftermath of every raid and disaster in the marche, saving lives and helping rebuild in the aftermath.
Smart (+2): He's very well-read on a variety of topics and is a highly competent mage, though not to the extent of the Lady Cuimilt
Clever (+2): Quite good at manipulating people and a masterful orator
Patient (0): The slow route is always better.
Amoral (0): Baby? What baby? I'm quite sure there wasn't a baby here.
Cynic (0): His five long years fighitng the Emperor has given him a glimpse into humanity's true nature.
Dishonest (-1): Is perfectly willing and able to lie through his teeth to the gods themselves if he saw advantage in it

Lady Cecilia Cuimilt: (36, F)
Brilliant (+5): Lady Cecilia is one of the most brilliant ritualists of this generation and her knowledge of magic is unmatched in Montcastel.
Cynic (0): Her five long years in the Emperor's court has given her a glimpse into humanity's true nature.
Amoral (0): Seriously, there wasn't a baby so stop asking
Dishonest (-1): Is perfectly willing and able to lie through her teeth to the gods themselves if she saw advantage in it.
Obsessive (Dark Magic) (-2): Her time at the Emperor's court taught her that there was far more out there than she'd dreamt of in her studies. Also its all awful. She has to learn more.

Iseult Cuimilt: (12, F) (Niece)
Cursed (-2): Iseult is the victim of one of the Tyrant's curses, the details of which haven't left the family. She is prone to severe seizures and sometimes acts oddly, speaking in strange tongues or displaying knowledge far beyond her years.
Clever (+2): She is quite bright and very well-spoken, and would have been a worthy successor of her uncle before the Tyrant's curse took hold.

Corvus Cuimilt: (9, M) (Son)
Amoral (0): This is getting ridiculous. He's 9 years old, what would he even do with a baby?

House Cuimilt were amongst the noblest-in-spirit and loyalest vassals of the throne for nearly three centuries, their boundless generosity and willingness to put their lives on the line for the least of their subject earning them the undying loyalty of their peasants. When the Tyrant turned mad they did what they could to shield their people from his cruelty, trying to keep their corner of Montcastel, the marche of Vieilarbre, stable and safe. This ended when the Tyrant launched an unprovoked attack on Wellspring, the county capital and their ancestral home, which killed the Count and Countess, and kidnapped Lady Cecilia, wife of Lord Naevus, and several of the younger members of the family. Lord Naevus, now heir to the marche, who was in the field visiting the site of a dragon attack, returned to ashes. The entire county was inflamed by the slaughter, quickly spreading to the rest of Montcastel. His older brother marched on Clermont to demand an explanation and present his grievances to the Imperial Court. When his remains were paraded through Vieilarbre the entire peasantry rose up, enraged at the casual murders of their kind and just lords at the hands of the Tyrant. Lord Naevus vowed not to take his brother's title until he'd made the Tyrant answer for his crimes and rescued his wife and remaining family. Roland's nascent rebellion was still finding its footing and had little open support among the nobility. Lord Naevus's joining of the rebellion brought it not only the Cuimilt finances and a small army of militia and devoted peasants, but also some much-needed respect and noble connections. Not long after his joining of the rebellion he was met by an unexpected parcel, his newborn son Corvus. Lady Iseult had borne him to term while in the Emperor's vile clutches and managed to smuggle him to loyal retainers in the capital, who in turn snuck him to Naevus. The child was to remain with him for the remainder of the war, only leaving his side when Roland needed him in the thick of the fighting. This likely saved his life as his few remaining family members died one after the other during the five years of war. His remaining sister died during the Siege of Douv when, acting as the conduit for the artillery mages, the Tyrant broke the local leylines and she absorbed the brunt of the arcane rebound to protect the rebellion's few proper warmages. Two more cousins fell at the Battle of Brielle Hill, dying at the side of Leonard Du Lac in his desperate last charge. The last of his family, his estranged aunt, died during the climactic final battle of Clermont, when Roland's forces overwhelmed the Tyrant's demonic servants and struck him down. He reunited with Lady Cecilia and together they threw the first torch on the Tyrant's inner labs, purging the evils of the place with fire. Lady Cecilia had also managed to protect his older brother's daughter, Iseult, though the young lady had been afflicted by a horrible curse by the Tyrant. Lord Naevus, Lady Cecilia at his side, finally returned to Vieilarbre. There was little celebration, many of the young men of the marche lying dead on foreign fields and the family decimated, but there was satisfaction. Roland showered Lord Naevus with gifts, his offers of grander titles being rebuffed by the tired Marquis of Vieilarbre, most of which were then given to the people of the marche to help rebuild. The years since have been quiet as the marche recovered, the curse on Iseult steadily growing worse.

Bestiary of Montcastel
Spoiler :

Pegasi

First thing you must understand about the pegasi are that they are not horses with wings. Indeed, appearance does not denote relation or connection, no matter what the common folks think. I've dissected dozens of these creatures, and none of them ever had internal structures similar to any horse that I've seen.

First things first. These creatures are omnivorous where as horses are strict grazers. They'll eat flesh and vegetable matter alike with no significant complaints. Montcastel variety of these creatures seem to have specialized for predatory behavior. Their normally flat teeth have elongated into vicious fangs.

Their bone structure, unsurprisingly, are like that of birds, which I presume is how they are able to maintain flight.

I must confess, however, that I suspect that these creatures are not exactly natural by the strictest sense of that word. Their flight capability must be magically enhanced somehow. I find it hard to believe that these pegasi can maintain flight with a heavily armored knight on their back for hours without showing signs of strain otherwise.

An acquaintance of mine from Besangueux suggested that these creatures are capable of seeing and riding upon an unseen field of magic in the air, which descends from the skies above. It does explain why monsters with flight capabilities tend to lurk in high places around the world.

I have no means of confirming nor denying this theory, and thus leave it for your consideration.

The Lightseeker Moth

I'm not talking about any moth here. I'm talking of the Lightseekers.

These Moths are found generally, in the forest. It's usually difficult to spot them, let alone catch them. Best way to know their presence is if you hear soft wingbeats somewhere above you in the trees, where they grow so thick and sharp that you would be tempted to drop to a four just to get around. If you, around that moment, find something with your name carved upon it, you will know that a Moth have chosen to grace you with its presence.

While nobody has ever spotted these creatures, their form is known to us by their many, many carvings, which depict an insectoid creature with two human hands in place of their legs.

The local hill tribes and civilization that used to exist on this mountain worshipped these creatures. Legends depict them as guardians of places, using illusions and tricks of memories to deceive intruders away from secrets. They believed that these moths will help protect their own secrets with the right words of worship and the right incantations.

If you ask me, these creatures are just skittish, but considering the amount of broken moth carvings we still find in ruins and old cities that somehow evaded our attention for centuries, I have to admit that these pagans may know a thing or a two about these arcane creatures.

they are creatures of the dark, but they seek the light?

Herve’s Bestiary -
Library of the College de Champilême

Abeille:

Abeille are the smallest of birds. They are born from the bodies of oxen, or from the decaying flesh of slaughtered calves; worms form in the flesh and then turn into bees. Abeille live in community, choose the most noble among them as king, have wars, and make honey. Their laws are based on custom, but the king does not enforce the law; rather the lawbreakers punish themselves by stinging themselves to death. Abeille are afraid of smoke and are excited by noise. Each has its own duty: guarding the food supply, watching for rain, collecting dew to make honey, and making wax from flowers.

Aigle

The Aigle is the king of birds. When it is old it becomes young again in a very strange manner. When its eyes are darkened and its wings are heavy with age, it seeks out a fountain clear and pure, where the water bubbles up and shines in the clear sunlight. Above this fountain it rises high up into the air, and fixes its eyes upon the light of the sun and gazes upon it until the heat thereof sets on fire its eyes and wings. Then it descends down into the fountain where the water is clearest and brightest, and plunges and bathes three times, until it is fresh and renewed and healed of its old age. The Aigle has such keen vision, that if it is high up among the clouds, soaring through the air, it sees the fish swimming beneath it, in river or sea; then down it shoots upon the fish and seizes and drags it to the shore. Again, if unknown to the Aigle its eggs should be changed and others put into its nest, when the young are grown, before they fly away, it carries them up into the air when the sun is shining its brightest. Those which can look at the rays of the sun, without blinking, it loves and holds dear; those which cannot stand to look at the light, it abandons, as base-born, nor troubles itself henceforth concerning them.

Alerion:

The alerion is a bird like an eagle; it is lord over all other birds. It is the color of fire, is larger than an eagle, and its wings are as sharp as a razor. The is only one pair in the world. When she is sixty years old, the female lays two eggs, which take sixty days to hatch. When the young are born, the parents, accompanied by a retinue of other birds, fly to the sea, plunge in, and drown. The other birds return to the nest to care for the young alerion until they are old enough to fly

Amphisbaena

The amphisbaena is a two-headed lizard or serpent. It has one head in the normal position, and another at the end of its tail. It can therefore run in either direction. Its eyes shine like lamps, and has no fear of cold.

Bernace

Bernace (Barnacle Geese) come from trees that grow over water. These trees produce birds that look like small geese; the young birds hang from their beaks from the trees. When the birds are mature enough, they fall from the trees; any that fall into the water float and are safe, but those that fall on land die.

Bonnacon

The bonnacon is a beast with a head like a bull, but with horns that curl in towards each other. Because these horns are useless for defense, the bonnacon has another weapon. When pursued, the beast expels its dung which travels a great distance (as much as two acres), and burns anything it touches.

Caladrius

The caladrius is an all-white bird that lives in the king's house. If it looks into the face of a sick man, it means that he will live, but if the caladrius looks away, the sick man will die of his illness. To cure the sick man, the caladrius looks at him, and drawing the sickness into itself, the bird flies up toward the sun, where the disease is burned up and destroyed. The caladrius is an unclean bird which must not be eaten.

Castor

The Castor is hunted for its testicles, which are valued for making medicine. When the beaver sees that it cannot escape from the hunter, it bites off its testicles and throws them to the hunter, who then stops pursuing the beaver. If another hunter chases the beaver, it shows the hunter that it has already lost its testicles and so is spared.

Crocodile

The crocodile is a four-footed beast, about twenty cubits long, that is born in the Nile River. Its skin is very hard, so that it is not hurt when struck by stones. It spends the day on land and the night in the water. It is armed with cruel teeth and claws; it is the only animal that can move the upper part of its jaw while keeping the lower part still. Its dung can be used to enhance a person's beauty: the excrement (or the contents of the intestines) is smeared on the face and left there until sweat washes it off. Crocodiles always weep after eating a man. Despite the hardness of the crocodile's skin, there are two animals that can kill it. The sawfish (serra) can cut the crocodile's stomach, and the hydrus can crawl into the crocodile's mouth and kill it from the inside.

Dolphin

Dolphins are the swiftest creature in the sea. They can fly over ships that attack them. They follow the sound of human voices, and gather together in crowds to sing at the sound of music. When dolphins play and leap in strong waves they seem to forecast storms. There is a kind of dolphin in the river that has a serrated back, which kills crocodiles by cutting into the soft parts of the belly.

Grifon

The griffin is a winged, four-footed animal. It has the body of a lion, but the wings and head of an eagle. Griffins are the enemy of the horse. A griffin will tear a man to pieces or carry him to its nest to feed its young. Griffins are strong enough to carry away an entire live ox. They are also known for digging gold from mines.

Hedehog

The hedgehog has the appearance of a young pig, but is entirely covered with sharp spines or quills, which protect it from danger. When it is time for the harvest, the hedgehog goes into a vineyard, and climbing up a vine, shakes the grapes off onto the ground. It then rolls around on the fallen grapes to spear them with its quills, so it can carry the fruit home to feed its young. (Some say that the fruit the hedgehog carries away is the apple or fig.) A cooked hedgehog can be used to make medicine. When the hedgehog notices the approach of a man, it rolls itself into a ball so its spines protect it, and creaks like a cart to fool the man. Hedgehogs can detect the direction the wind is blowing from; when the wind comes from the north, the hedgehog closes the north hole of its lair.

Hyena

According to the law, hyenas must not be eaten because they are dirty. Hyenas can change their sex; sometimes they are male, other times female. They live near tombs and eat the dead bodies they find there. There is a stone in the hyena's eye (some say in the stomach of its young) that will give a person the ability to predict the future if the stone is placed under the person's tongue. Hyenas will circle a house at night, calling out words with the voice of a man; anyone who is deceived and goes out to investigate is eaten. A dog that crosses a hyena's shadow will lose its voice. The hyena's spine is rigid, so to turn it must move its entire body. The result of a mating between a hyena and a lioness is the beast called leucrota.

Ichneumon

The ichneumon is the enemy of the dragon. When it sees a dragon, the ichneuman covers itself with mud, and closing its nostrils with its tail, attacks and kills the dragon. Some say it is also the enemy of the crocodile and the asp, and attacks them in the same way. This may be a confusion with the hydrus, which has these same habits.

Kingfisher

At mid-winter, when the sea storms are strongest, the kingfisher lays its eggs in the sand on the shore. For seven days the kingfisher hatches the eggs, and for an additional seven days it nourishes them. During those fourteen days the sea remains calm, unnaturally for the season. Sailors know that during this time they will not be threatened by storms, and call this the "halcyon days" after the ancient name of the kingfisher, halcyon.

Leontophone

The Leontophone is a small animal that is deadly to lions. To kill a lion, the flesh of a leontophone is burned and its ashes are sprinkled on meat, which is placed at a crossroad; if a lion eats only a small amount it dies. Lions hate leontophones and hunt and kill them, tearing them apart with their claws rather than biting them.

Leucrocuta

The leucrota is a swift beast. It is a composite animal, the result of a mating between a hyena and a lioness, the same size as an ass, but with a horse's head, chest and legs like a lion, hind quarters like a stag, and cloven hoofs. It has an extremely wide mouth, that stretches from one ear to the other. It does not have individual teeth, but only a single bone where teeth should be. Like the hyena, the leucrota can make sounds that resemble human speech.

Panther

The panther is a gentle beast; only the dragon is its enemy. It is a beautiful, multicolored animal; its coat is spotted with white or black disks. After the panther has feasted, it goes into a cave and sleeps for three days. When it wakes up it gives a loud roar, and while it is roaring a sweet odor comes out of its mouth. Any animal that hears the roar follows the sweet smell to reach the panther. Only the dragon stays away, hiding in a hole because it is afraid of the panther. The female panther can only give birth once, because the young in her womb tear at her with their claws, wounding her so that she can no longer conceive.

Reynard

The Reynard is a crafty and deceitful animal that never runs in a straight line, but only in circles. When it wants to catch birds to eat, the reynard rolls in red mud so that it appears to be covered in blood. It then lies apparently lifeless; birds, deceived by the appearance of blood and thinking the reynard to be dead, land on it and are immediately devoured.

Salamander

The salmander is a cold animal. It can live unharmed in a fire, and its coldness will extinguish the hottest flames. If it enters hot water, the water will become cold.

From the salamander comes a material that is unlike any other cloth; when it becomes dirty, it must be thrown into a fire, which will consume the dirt without harming the cloth. The salmander's poison is very strong, and can kill many at once. If it climbs an apple tree, the apples become poisonous; if it enters a well, the water becomes deadly.

Sawfish

The sawfish is a sea monster with enormous wings. When it sees a ship, it raises its wings so it can race against the ship. The sawfish tires after thirty or forty stadia and dives back into the water to devour fish. When it raises its wings they hold back the wind from ships; sailers do not like the sawfish because it causes ships to sink. This beast is also said to have a serrated crest that it uses to cut into ships.

Scitalis

The scitalis is a serpent with such marvelous markings on its back that its appearance stuns the viewer, slowing the person down so that they are caught. Its heat is so great that it sheds its skin even in the winter.

Scorpion

The scorpion is properly classified as a worm, not a snake, according to Helgen. It stings with its tail and so injects poison into the wound. A person who is stung becomes hydrophobic. A scorpion will not strike the palm of the hand.

Spoiler :

All of these are grabbed from OTL medieval bestiaries.

Age: 29
Background: The House L'Écuyer was once a proud and noble house that has been slowly brought to ruin by the obsessive antics of the young Achille L'Écuyer. His parents died young, leaving him to be raised by advisers and courtiers. Raised on tales of chivalry and justice, Achille fancied himself a knight, and he wasn't a particularly bad soldier either. However, as the years went by it became apparent that he was neither the brightest person around nor a particularly good ruler. This was amplified after the start of the rebellion when Achille became obsessed with the Hero. A chance meeting one day led to Achille falling almost literally head over heels for him, and it was tough to tell if this admiration was strictly platonic. He would write letters of poetry, details of his day, and other fanciful works but never receive a response. This never dissuaded him. Now, with the Hero growing increasingly ill, Achille has taken it upon himself to scour the land for a cure, or failing that, defend the honor and family of the Hero till the day Achille dies.

Élodie L'Écuyer (Cousin of Head of Household)
Traits:
Smart (+2), Trained in Business (+2), Diligent (+1), Patient (0), Distant (-1)
Age: 17
Background: A cousin of Achille and the de facto ruler of the House L'Écuyer. Where her cousin lacked brainpower she excelled in it, having attended the College of Champilême. With her cousin leaving on his obsessive journey Élodie finds herself running Duchy of Bourtaigne in his name. Time will tell if she will grow irritated over having to do this.

Bestiary:

Wisp: In swamps or in thickly forested areas, wisps can be found, tiny fairies of Light. Capricious beings, a traveller who trusts a wisp to guide them will only be lead astray, but they are beautiful nonetheless, especially in the Summer where they hold court and thousands gather to create an ethereal glow.

Wisps leading a young girl into the woods, never to be seen again

Nimue’s Grace: A peculiar type of lily that exclusively grows in Lake Mothira, it has a rich blue color and large drooping petals that give it a rather forlorn appearance. Blessed with medicinal properties, it is said that these flowers can even bring someone back from the brink of death. After Lake Mothira became a site of pilgrimage due to a saint performing a miracle there, the flowers have gained a new name - Saint’s Tears.

Weeping Bell: Named after it’s distinctive shape, the weeping bell is a carnivorous plant that lies in wait in the forests of Pentherve, pouncing on anything unfortunate enough to cross its path. Relying on the element of surprise, the weeping bell swallows its prey whole and then dissolves them into their constituent parts. Also known as the maneater, for its unique distinction of being the only plant in Taliese that eats people.

As I continue working on the update and finishing off the ruleset, I figured I'd post these backgrounds for the two heads of the Taliesean colleges.

Victoria Le Brun
(F, 55)

The headmistress of Champilême. A woman of great talent, Victoria Le Brun dedicated herself to the discovery of the “First Magic” and to bring back the ideal of what magic once was. She was horrified about what Emperor Valerian was doing in his quest for power, and she, along with many other mages of Champilême, sided with the Hero. Now, she is Headmistress of Champilême, and is dedicated to three things: teaching her students, maintaining traditions of the college, and researching the lost arts of the “First Magic”.

+Brilliant-You don’t become the headmaster of a major college by being anything less than one of the greatest wizards of your generation.
+Beloved-Universally liked by the students and professors.
+Educated-Obviously
+Attractive-Very much so
+Diligent-She is dedicated to her duties.
+Just-No one who has been punished did not deserve it
Patient-Rediscovering the First Magic will take time…
Idealist-Believes in a better world of magic
-Depraved-It’s better not to discuss this
-Cruel-It’s really best not to discuss this
-Addicted-She’s an academic, of course she’s a lush

Antoin Darcy (M, 39)

The headmaster of Besangueux, Antoin Darcy is considered one of the greatest mind of Taliese, and at thirty nine he has already authored two masterpieces on Dark magic. When the previous headmaster died during the rebellion some eight years ago, Darcy took over and led the college’s wizards in the fight against the Tyrant, being rewarded with generous amounts of funding and some interesting artifacts from the Tyrant’s personal collection were donated to the Academy. Though he considers his studies quite important, he deeply believes in the educational mission of Besangueux, and is as proud of his student’s accomplishments as he would be his own.

+Brilliant-You don’t become the headmaster of a major college by being anything less than one of the greatest wizards of your generation.
+Innovative-His two major works aside, he has turned out countless essays on other applications of Dark magic, and has been known to dabble in experiments that would not quite be considered safe.
+Educated-Obviously
+Hardy-A frailer man would likely have fallen by now.
+Handy-He greatly enjoys tinkering with things.
+Lucky-Twenty years ago, he and seventy-nine other students went to the Braslaw mountains to attempt to retrieve a dragon egg. Of those eighty students, only he survived.
Amoral-There is no room for morality in the pursuit of magical innovation
Idealist-Genuinely believes not only in the educational mission of the college, but also the future he is pursuing.
-Arrogant-It’s hard to stay humble when you’re this brilliant.
-Temperamental-He’s an academic, of course he’s moody!
-Obsessive-With his studies, with pushing magic’s boundaries, and lately...with these strange artifacts.
-Addicted-He’s an academic, of course he’s a lush.
