UPDATE XXXVII
1500 AD

1492 : The Greeks Discover America
Following the currents of luck, the greek explorers have arrived in a strange and alien land, they belived they had arrived in India, the land of ancient lagend. Thinking that they called the natives "Indians". The Greeks initially arrived in the cuban main island. later explorers would arrive in the island of Dominica. And an even third party arrived not in the americas, but still unknown territory in northern africa.
The Explorers arrived back to Athens, bringing exotic animals, spices, fruits, and of course gold!, lots of gold. This perhaps will encourage more exploration in the future for Greece.

1493 : Islam arrives in the new continent.
The mamluke adventurists arrived in the americas soon after their orthodox counterparts, at first they encountered problems from natives, being moslty woman warriors, they were named the amazons. After some weeks both sides worked togheter, making the area prime for colonisation.

1493 : French Land in Northern America
A third power arrived in the continent at the same time of the mamlukes, but instead of warm jungles, they found cooler climates. the local furs might as well provide economic incentives.

Ottomans and Byzantens start expansion
Both nations have started expansion w/ colonists moving to the already explored areas. In the ottoman empire the colony east of Jerusalem turned out to have an oasis and plenty to support a large population. Settlers rushed to it and had a working village before expected. however it has become somewhat un-ruly because of lack of a military presence.

Spain Gibraltar Goldmine
Spain has begun to suck the wealth of many mediterrenean nations, filling her coffers.
This however is not very welcomed by the ROP buyers......

DIPLO:

From Brandenburg:
To Bavaria:
We are planning an invasion to take some land out of Poland, would you like to allie and get the nearest southern portion for yourself?

***---IMPORTANT---***
Some have already sent explorers and had success.
If your explorers had success, a flag will appear in the map w/ your nations color, this means that piece of land is claimed territory and you can start to settle it by paying the colonist charter.
after you pay the colonist charter, migrants and colonisers will start to arrive, the borders of the new territory will be set, but you will not gain control or income of it until a village appears in it.
(also you can only give raw directions to the land explorers, sea explorers have absolutely no idea where they are heading )

Story:

"Exploration Log --

Day Unknown since leaving port: It has been years since we left port at Carthago Novo, since we passed through the Straits of Gibraltar. It has been years since we last saw any ships beside our own. We have lost count of the days, of the years, of possibly the decades. We’ve lost one of our ships and, with it, many good men during a storm just two weeks ago. We will be turning back, this search for Allah-forsaken land be damned, if we do not sight land within the next few days.

Day Unknown since leaving port: This will likely be the last entry I make describing our journey to this “new land”. We have seen nothing. Nothing at all. Tomorrow morning we will turn the ships around and head back to the Straits. If that is even possible anymore.

Day 1 since sighting land: Praise Allah! Just as we were preparing to alter our course, one of our deckhands yelled out, “Land ahead! Land dead ahead!” It is amazing how close we were to giving up, but we have made it! We made it across the ocean! The land appears to be several days’ journey away, but it is there. It is there!

Day 3: We landed upon the soils of this New World filled with riches and gazed upon the most expansive forest – if it could even be called a mere forest – we have ever seen. Never before had we imagined anything like it existing in the world! We placed the flag of the Mamluke Empire into the sands of the beach and immediately set up base camp at the edge of this forest. Our assignment is to map out a small portion of this land, scout out any resources, and possibly any natives. One final note; one of our seamen proclaimed the lands, in a sarcastic manner, to be New Phoenicia. Despite the context with which he spoke of it in, the name has stuck. Hopefully, Sultan Hasdrubal will find it a suitable name when we return to the empire.

Day 7: We’ve met natives. Their society appears to be dominated by the most aggressive women we have ever laid eyes on. They wear little clothing and appear to be very primitive, not to mention they still worship nature like our barbaric ancestors. They know not of Islam, and we see a great opportunity here. There were numerous problems at first contact, but we have managed to trade some items with them, and we have come to know one another to an extent. They call us “Mamloos”, their infantile minds apparently unable to put the entire name together, and they refer to themselves as “Amazons”. Despite their shortcomings, we may be able to be able to forge relations with them.

Day 12: We bid farewell to the Amazons. We take with us strange fruits and live animals, as well as animal furs. Plants of all sorts have been loaded on board, as well. We have restocked fully on fresh water and food, and we shall be shoving off. Large constructs have been built out of the sturdiest material we could find here, mostly wood, to help guide colonists to the location when they arrive. We also have mapped out the entire small section of this dense, thick forest and all of its resources. Prayer to Allah for a safe journey home has been made, and we shall begin our trek back to Carthago Novo. If Allah is with us, we shall arrive safely with our discoveries."

. . .upon arrival home, the explorers were treated as heroes. A whole New World lies across the ocean, and soon the Mamluke Empire would extend across it! Sultan Hasdrubal's sculpture was finally finished with the inscription "And these brave heroes made possible the glory that is New Phoenicia". . .

And now, the Age of Discovery for the Mamlukes has truly begun.

Diplomacy:

None.

Diary of Josef Sharaf of the Eastern Lands:
(Dates unknown, as days are worth little in a desert.)
-Groan. Just as I finish my years on the construction party, two of my camels take ill. Now I will be destitute unless fate turns my way soon. The priest is a good man though, he has promised to pray for me.

-My neighbour has invited me to his celebration of the Pentecost. I have accepted. I hear that an Ottoman merchant will be there, perhaps he will have something that cures my camels?

-Just my luck. I've been drafted. The merchant had nothing to sell and my wife bickered with me over the loss of her ring. Later she found it under an urn. Typical of the stupid...

-Off to the military today. It's not a war being fought, which is good, but it's further out in the desert I'm being sent to. There isn't even a settlement there yet. On the better side, though, one of my neighbours was in a fight. An empty wineskin was slung over to my house, and he did not want it back.

-Oh, what a wonderful life. I'm sweating, the flies are out and today I'm carrying the anvil. On the better side, though, my commander got drunk. He got a reprimand from his superior and his remaining wineskins are to be shared among us.

The First Voyage

Three ships started from Athena. The goal of the expedition was to find new lands in Africa. Much money had been paid to found the expedition and the fate of the nation was linked with the results. The three ships were the Aquilina, the Nape and the Pontus. The leader of the expedition was Prokopios, a relative to the Queen. After the ships would have crossed Gibraltar, they would have sailed along the coast searching for new and fertile lands. But things went differently. Just after the expedition had crossed the strait of Gibraltar (after paying a barefaced customs) a destructive storm had scattered the Aquilina and the Nape from the Pontus. The Pontus managed to sail back to Lisbon and quickly repaired the damage they had gotten from the storm. Soon they were able to continue their journey along the African coast.

Meanwhile the two other ships had drifted over the Atlantic Ocean for several weeks. Prokopios, who had been onboard of the Nape when the storm scattered the fleet, hoped to arrive at the other end of the world (he was one of the great believers in a round world). However after one month on the open sea, the supplies were running out. The crew had already started to get mutinous and some leaders wanted to sail back, but Prokopios was convinced that he would soon arrive on the other end of the world. But another week passed without any land in sight. The captains tried to persuade Prokopios to turn around, but before they could decide what to do another storm scattered the two ships from each other. The Nape with Prokopios was drifted westwards and the Aquilina drifted southwards. At the next day the scout inside the lookout could see the contours of some small islands on the horizon. In the afternoon Prokopios and a small band of sailors landed at one of the small islands. They were greeted by some natives with exotic fruits, glittering pearls and colourful feathers. The people were only barley clothed and they believed in strange nature gods. Prokopios noted in his dairy that those people had to be converted to the one and only true god! The sailors stayed as guests on the island for one week. The land was claimed by the Greek crown and Prokopios called it “New Attica”. After the land had been claimed, the ship, guided by some natives, sailed south western. The natives (Who called themselves Taino) had told Prokopois that a bigger island was located nearby and he hoped to find gold and other treasures there. A few days later they arrived on this island. The Taino had a big chieftain there and he greeted the westerners with golden presents from his very own treasure. Prokopois was surprised from the friendliness of the Taino and he wanted to learn more about them. A small settlement was built on the island (which was called Cuba for some unknown reason) and in honour of the explorer it was names Prokoponople. One year later the great explorer sailed homewards again. With him he had a ship full of items of the new world.

Meanwhile the Aquilina had found a big Island, too. The Arawak who populated the island were pretty similar to the Taino (at least in the eyes of a European). The sailors claimed the land in the name of the Queen and called it New Crete, since the shape was roughly the same of the island, where most of the sailors of the Aquilina came from. (Stalin actually it is called Hispaniola. The Dom. Rep and Haiti share the island in the real world. It´s not “Dominica” ;) )

In Africa the Nape had established a small trading post and the African continent was ready to be explored by the Grecians. Already colonists were sent towards Africa and New Attica and the rumours of new unexplored lands in the west were told in every city in Greece. Truly a new age!

The Greeks had not payed the 2 PP they owed to the Spanish Crown! This must be remedied! They will NOT be allowed to rip off the Spanish King! King Ferdinand had seen the wealth that the Mamuluke explorers had returning from the "Americas" held plentiful supplies of gold, fur, and other rare items. The Spanish explorers sent had not yet returned, but it was hoped that they would come back with rare goods so that the Spanish Crown would prosper from it! The leader, Christopher Columbus, had requested from the Crown 3 ships. The Santa Marie, Pinta, and Carlos to explore the seas, he had not yet returned...

Meanwhile, the great King Ferdinand had decided to expand the navy so that no other nation would dare challenge Spain's claim to Gibraltar since the collaspe of the infidel Catalunyans! Spain was one of the oldest and remaining nations in the world, with England, Geneva, Austria and Greece. One of the powerful monarchs dwelled in this large nation, the Greek King, had decided not to pay Spain back....The King would allow them through this turn, but next turn he will not be so merciful...
