Meat hook dangling craze mystifies police

MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- Law enforcement officials in the Florida Keys are mystified by a bizarre new pastime -- young people dangling themselves from meat hooks on a popular sandbar.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said on Sunday that the Monroe County sheriff's office and Coast Guard were called on July 12 to the sandbar off Whale Harbor in Islamorada where locals say wild behavior is becoming a tradition.

They found that five young people had erected a bamboo tripod and hung meat hooks from it. A young woman, her feet brushing the surface of the shallow water, dangled from the frame, hooks embedded firmly in her shoulders.

According to a Coast Guard video, she did not seem to mind the hooks.

Lt. Tom Brazil of the Coast Guard told the Key West Citizen newspaper that a young man, who also had hooks embedded in his heavily pierced and tattooed skin, assured him the group was "just enjoying the afternoon."

A Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami said the group had clearly done this before and intended to post photos of themselves on a Web site dedicated to "body modification" -- the ritualistic piercing of the body.

"It looked like a daily routine for them," she said, adding that the hooks had been inserted in the skin in a professional manner and had drawn very little blood."

"As long as they weren't creating any kind of ruckus or riot within a crowd they really weren't breaking any laws."

The Coast Guard passed the video on to federal justice authorities but no further action will be taken.

They're harming nobody. I don't see a problem with this; I wouldn't do it, but I still think it's kinda cool.

They are stupid for doing stupid things, it isn't illegal, just stupid.

In a country of freedom you have to accept such things, i find it disgusting but it is their choice and as it says they aren't breaking the law so nothing can be done, i just hope nothing will go wrong....

Actually I've seen this before - the sensation of mild pain and "dangling" from the hooks produces all kinds of interesting endomorphins and suchlike, making it pleasurable.

Of course, the man who told me this had a pierced *eyelid*, so he might have been a little peculiar anyway.

This is simply human, similar rituals exist among many cultures - modern and ancient.

It is a way to explore the mind body dichotomy.

IIRC The film "A man called (or named) Horse" starring Richard Harris as an English gent in the Indian territories during 1800s USA. His character went through some sort of Indian ritual which involved hanging around on hooks.

If you've ever had piercings, especially in the tongue, lip or belly button, this doesn't come across as that disgusting.

A little peculiar, but thats all.

Im amazed there was "very little blood loss"

Am I to understand from this statement that the Coast Guard encountered a young woman, hanging from meat hooks imbedded in her body, and they did nothing? Thats not possible right? I must be misunderstanding something.

they probably said something to her over a loudspeaker, she replied "no, Im okay, I did this to myself".

Followed by a very interesting discussion for the coast guard.

Well documented native American rite of passage ritual.

Anyway, some people push spears through both cheeks. Surely far more extreme than hanging around admiring the view.

So my idea of the 3 cm thick nails piercing the skull front-back wasn't so far fetched after all :crazyeye:

She must be really convincing. How did they know the guy with her wasnt a psycho who abducted her or something? Would police walk away if they went to a home and encountered the same thing? Makes no sense to me:confused:

Can't say anything but that anyone can do anything he wants to his own body before I see the photos.

but if you or anyone else would like to see the photos
my favorite is this one (http://www.bmezine.com/ritual/A20829/high/g5egtgwc.jpg) but you can find hundreds more around www.bmezine.com
a friend of mine once saw a one point chest suspension, live. he said he also found pictures of three in tandem but I still haven't seen it.

That looks extremely unconfortable, but who am I to judge what others find relaxing, within reason. ;)
