Born of Fire: Discussion and Development Thread

So this is what you're up to now! :)
I know how you feel, so much to do, same thing with my mod, havent even finished the first age and i've been working on it for ages. My advise, dont try to plan that far ahead, make short to medium term goals, in my case I'll release a preview version when I finish the first era, it will be completely playable, just stop having new content when players reach the 2nd era :)

I wonder if you manage to defeat the invading spanish forces though at the end of your scenerio Red..does a huge natural disaster happen and say, you have done events that were not fated to take place, you will now be erased....

GAME OVER....
Don't tell anyone! The "spaceship" victory is a 13 AHAU 4 UAYEB thing. You have to conquer the Spanish capital to get access to a unique strategic resource in time to build the whole thing by the last turn (2012 AD).

Yeah, you need the crystal skull resource, the moai resource from Easter Island, & the Santo Cáliz de Valencia from the Spaniards in order to build the three parts of the calendar (like the three quarks "top", "bottom", & "strange") then the world decays & disintegrates.

This reminds me of old magazine adds for the old game Rise of Nations, one of the adds said: "What if the Nubians were the first to land on the mood? What if the Aztecs had invaded Spain diring the 1500s? What if Al Gore had invented the internet? What if you ruled the world?"

I'd be glad to help with some tech icons if I can find the time but don't want to dip into what Blue Monkey has planned...

I gratefully accept your offer! :)

Sounds like good advice to me.
Even if it's still a long way off, I can't wait to play your mod.

I'm wondering if your having the mayans in their own group, does that mean they will have their own city style? Interesting. Are they different enough to warrant another style though?

Yes, and yes. Absolutely. I could get away with giving them all the same city style just as one could get away with giving east asia one city style. But I decided I really want to go all out with the graphics, and I think it makes sense to differentiate given that I have the opportunity to do so with a regionally focused mod.
There are variations throughout Mesoamerica in architectural style, but none greater than with the Maya, who were comparitavely unique architecturally or otherwise. It's something that you or I or most people wouldn't really notice because we're so culturally removed from those people. For example, I bet that the first era of my new city set is just as different from 'real' Mesoamerican cities as a set of fantasy European cities would be from an historical European city set. But with the European ones, that difference is obvious; with the mesoamericans, not so much.
By the way, would you have any suggestions about the culture groups I detailed a few posts up? I guess we can assume the Spanish are in.

Maybe some crystal skulls appear as a resource, and the starship actually is interdiamensional, not interplanetary, in nature, like a certain recent Dreamworks/Lucusfilm joint venture.....

Can't, hardcoded.

Spoiler :
:D

Added a preview of the third era tech tree and updated the tech list.

I've been thinking about agression levels and have come up with this:

5 - Aztecs, Inca, Mixtecs, Moche
4 - Chimor, Huari, Tarascans, Teotihuacan
3 - Chachapoya, Chibchan, Pipil, Toltecs
2 - Huastecs, Mapuche, Maya, Tiwanaku
1 - Chavin, Olmecs, Nazca, Zapotecs

I think I'd stop the game before the spanish arrival...be nice to have mesoamerica without europeans..but thats just me...;)

Here is something that might be more useful than advise: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7742067#post7742067

Well, I appreciate you saying so, but including the period of European contact is important to me. :)

Credit goes to M2TW from which I had this screenshot waiting for just this sort of thing. It may be a mod too, I don't recall.

Download here.

I prefer to do packs... but nobody knows that since I've never completely finished any of them. :undecide: :)

Just FYI, I've been a little busy lately and so have not had a chance to be on the forums much. I should be back in full force next week.

That's perfect, againsttheflow, thank you so very much! I look forward to any further tech icons.

Could you please have Norte Chico as a civ?

______________________________________________________________________________

I have city lists for other Andean civs as well (Wari, Tiwanaku, Chachapoya, Chavin, Moche, Nazca). I made them for an Andean mod which I never finished

Also, could you call the Aztecs the Triple Alliance for long and the Mexica for short? The Inca could be Tawantinsuyu for long and either the Inka or the Runa Simi (depending on your preference) for short. The Olmecs could be the La Venta Culture for long and the Olmecs (for lack of a better name) for short. The Triple Alliance's leader could be Tlatoani Motecuhzoma I (M. II was definitely not as good), the Maya's leader could be Pakal, and their city list could be

Kaan
Mutal
B'aakal
Chichen Itza
Waka'
Saal
Yaxchilan
Piedras Negras
Bonampak
Siaan K'aan
Oxwitza'
Xpuhil
Sacul
Ucanal
El Mirador
Motul
Seibal
Maasal
Rio Azul
Cancuen
Aguateca
Lamanai
Becan
Rio Bec
Mayapan
Uxmal
Dzibilchaltun

The La Venta Culture's city list could be

San Lorenzo
La Venta
Tres Zapotes
Laguna de los Cerros
San Andres
Tenochtitlan
Potrero Neuvo
El Azuzul
El Manati
Las Limas
Cascajal
San Martin Papajan
Cobata

That's all my suggestions.

EDIT: Also, how do you change the traits?

Hi, HC.

Norte Chico won't be included because that civilization for the most part predates the time period of this mod. It would really be out of place because of that, and considering that it came and went before any of the other civs included.

I will probably call all the civs by their common modern names, and not by their native ones. For a lot of the civs, we don't know their native names, and I don't want to be inconsistent in giving some civs native names and others modern ones. I could however mention native names where possible in the civilopedia.

Thank you for the city lists, though! I'll see what I can incorporate; some of the civs have very short lists at the moment. :)

Havent been on here lately, but how is everything going with this and how are you doing Red?

Me neither! :D ;)

I have been working through my checklist of building graphics lately. Here's some previews:

First are some pyramids with temples. The top is Aztec architecture and the bottom, Mayan. From left to right, the temples are: Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, Huitzilopochtli, and for a post-contact twist, Christ. Each temple requires the pyramid building to be built, each offers the city different benefits, and they are set up in the same way as power plants in vanilla civ - that is, only one per city at a time. As for the graphics, I did them several months ago now and I admit they aren't perfect, they're kind of blocky and lacking in detail in some parts and I'm open to working on them a bit more in the future. But anyway, that's the concept.

Here are some buildings I made more recently. Starting at the left they are: Weapons Maker, Tribute Collector, Barracks, Ball Court, and Noble's House. They are meant to be generic for mesoamerican civs (I don't want to make seperate graphics for Aztec / Mayan for all of the buildings). I think I did a better job with these buildings, and I'm pretty happy with them the way they are, but I'll still listen to suggestions for them too.

Whoa Red! Awesome! Those will fit nicely with my request just the other day ;)

Thanks, Madeira! I have many more buildings to come, and I think I'll release sets of them as I go along, since you (and others I hope) will find uses for them quickly.

Oh im sure I will ;)
Btw, since you did a Ball Court, maybe you could do your own version of the Sacrificial Altar too. In my mod the Atlanteans will do ritual sacrifices, the other American civs got it from them ;)

EDIT: Also, how do you change the traits?

Sorry, I missed this last time.

Answer: you can't really. :(
But you can rename them in "labels.txt". That's what I'm doing here.

Oh im sure I will ;)

Yes, I will be doing a sacrificial altar. I hope it will suit your needs as well. :)
