BOTM 01 Pre-Game Discussion

Not a free great person, but a free super specialist (so a settled great prophet, general or merchant in the city). It's random though and I wouldn't count on it occurring. The only significant event you can really influence is the slave revolt, which only occurs in slavery and is a way of balancing the civic a little better.

Ok, that clears things up and is also less significant then I thought it would be. At least it's a way to use settled great people, I think the only time I ever settled great people was when I had a great prophet and he couldn't research anything good and I didn't have anywhere to build the religious wonders.

Great news :D . Interestingly, I just finished a game as Zara. I'll take on challenger for the first time ever, just to make this game extra-special.

Erkon, count me in. Not that I've ever won an award or medal, but I won't let that stop me. :hammer:

Watch for A.I. building Apostolic Palace - hard to win if you build it, easier for A.I. to get the support to win... ;)
Watch for Forts to allow ships and planes to transit/base in when you think you have strategic access cut off... :(

In this particular game - no A.I. trading mandates a rethink of strategy... all bets are off if you don't get the Great Library, AND it takes ONE EXTRA research step to be able to get it than prior versions...

I've got many more... but don't want to give away too many secrets... :mischief:

Let it thus be known to everyone that I, me, Erkon will play the challenger setting for BOTM from now until end of 2008.

Yay! I might stand a chance of coming 5 turns ahead of you instead of 5 turns behind you for the spacerace.

(Definitely NOT playing challenger)

Dream on, baby :pat:

But I've only played BtS once, and it was very different from Vanilla/Warlords. The maintenance cost of overseas cities will make a domination game very different. I'll have to spend some time on the strategy forum to catch up those of you who have played BtS before. :mischief:

Regarding the game itself -- I'm contemplating wisdom of moving 1S to get extra hammer for early production, while keeping all revealed resources & possibly some additional sea one (scout could move there first to check & further evaluate). It would be a fairly hammer poor site (unless those tiles across bay have something) but that could be later fixed with Maori Statues.

I agree. The starting spot looks pretty good for early production but pretty bad for science etc. I'm thinking of moving the scout to check out the sea, probably settling 1S on the plains hill for the extra hammer, researching fishing, getting a workboat then worker out, then using the position to spam a few settlers and workers before taking out a nearby AI. Then as soon as I have the spare production to build a palace, moving my capital to somewhere more useful long-term.

But then I've never played a full BtS game - who knows what BtS differences might be lurking to turn what would've been a sensible strategy in warlords into something useless...?

First off im really exited that there's a BTS GOTM. I have a bug though, I don't know if it's related to this BSGOTM or BTS/HOF in general:

There's one square in my city raduis which stays shadowed, even if i move units on it. I can use it for city production though, and judging by the amount of hammers/food I can guess what kind of square it is and if it has a special resource or not. It's just very annoying. Anyone else had this bug?

Please use the "saves available" thread to discuss this.

:xmas:

I was kind of on the fence in civ4 and have only booted up bts a few times, so I will join Markus5 in the contender save, domination. Like MarkM says, I might switch to challenger if someday I win an award. I'll follow Harbourboy's route and just jump right in without any practice games. I'm with Erkon in thumbing through the strategy forum first though. I was kind of thinking of settling on the hill S to speed up a lighthouse, then the GL for a pre-emptive commerce boost before dominating since there is likely to be plenty of coast on this map, but I wouldn't take that idea as SirPleb quality...

Anyway, rather than cheapening the awards, I think it will only increase the glory for any challenger player who takes the fastest-finish award.

After reading the forum for a long time, I think it's time for me to join my first GotM. :) I'll take the challenger savegame and wonder why DaveMcW suggests settling on the Ivory? Is it for extra happiness in your capital without building roads? Or to plains phants grant an extra hammer in the city square as plains hills do?
Since I can't wait to start, I'll just ignore your suggestion ;)

Anyway, the capital looks like a good site for Maoi + Heroic Epic.

Edit: Ah, Worldbuilder just enlightened me about the extra hammer. Maybe I don't ignore your advice. :mischief:

Good one, Erkon :goodjob:

I'm not daring to join you, but looking at my global rank it's time to go back at GotM.

Then i will try the Mansa one, ready to submit a loss (i doubt) - the one where all the thing about XotMs started.
And after some more practice on BtS also this one - the start is nice, at least.

BTW, for the intercontinental thing, i've tried colonies, and they're useful.

I still can't manage to use espionage in the right way, i must improve.
