BOTM 73 - Final Spoiler

Lots of new players this xOTM, welcome all

I finished a while ago with a mid 1800-s space win.

Lack of happiness - wow - was that deliberate? I couldn't believe it as I explored more and more of the map looking for happiness and finding almost nothing. Hammurabi initially took the ivory/wine spot so I very quickly took that off him. Beyond that, I was desperate. I resolved to conquer Louis, even though he was way too far away for my taste, purely because he had a single silver (or was it a gem, I can't recall). I vassaled Louis, Gandhi and Justinian for no other reason than to give me an extra +1 happy for each vassal. I would have done the same to Bismarck if I'd thought of that trick early enough, but I'd already killed him when the idea occurred to me.

I even beelined optics so I could send a caravel to explore the edges and corners of the map just in case neilmeister had put some nice islands with resources there. Of course he hadn't, he'd put islands in the middle of the donut with lots of fish and no happiness  This game was definitely an exercise in refining your strategy to get every bit of happiness. But it worked in the end. By the end of the game I was generating over 6K science/turn (!) so researching a future tech every 1-2 turns. Maybe I should have just not built the ship but gone for the cow instead ;)

@DS: I faced the same problem so I stayed in HR and spammed Warriors to garrisson happiness into my cities. I had to gift metals in order to do so. I also managed to grab the Elephants from Hammy.

When everyone had Calendar I was able to trade for enough luxury resources to switch into Rep (Mids)

1864 space victory. Final score 89800

Beginning was wonder crazy. AI was slow to tech and build wonders.
Oracled metal casting in 1040 bc. Built GLH, mids, great wall, Temple of Artemis.
Libbed Communism at 1150 AD.

Started warring at 620 AD.
Hammurabi was 1st with trebs (capped at 1040 AD)
Saladin was next with trebs (capped at 1240 AD)

Next was Justinian with trebs. He was at war with Frederick and Gandhi, the war started well. He quickly made peace with Frederick and before I could cap him his stack wheeled around and slowed my war effort to a halt. I had to take a peace deal (1470 AD) to lick my wounds and get cannons. 10 turns later back at it. He was willing to capitulate but I waited 1 too many turns and he peace vassaled to DeGaulle. By this time I had infantry and soon Navy Seals. This was good since Justy had aluminum. So I made sure to take that. Finally capped both at 1750 AD. War weariness was excessive. This put me at 60% land.

This was a great map. The happiness resources were problematic. I popped silver in a mine early which helped somewhat. Mainly rep happiness and vassal happiness. Also rock and roll, broadway and Eiffel tower at the end. Saw the sushi islands and settled 3 of them to block AI getting them. Freddy took one site however.

Had a triple golden age at the end. Launched space ship with 7 turns of GA left. Not sure on when to start those up.

On seeing this tasty donut Homer decided to eat it all :D
After realising it's already eaten to some degree he decided to grab at least all of the sweet inner ring...
Attacked with cuirs by 1000AD. Guess I'm not used to monarch. Could have attacked with HAs from seeing the other games.
Gandhi peace vassaled. Later Freddy as well. So small part of inner ring wasn't eaten by Homer. I guess Freddy is Bart in my game. Tricked Homer like only he can
Conquest 1260 228k

I'm jealous ;) Usually I build quite a few cottages on most grassland hills in order to maximize science, but in this game I was deliberately mining as many hills as possible in the hope that I'd pop metal eventually, but no luck :(

I did notice during the late game that Saladin had popped a gold, and pondered about declaring war so I could capture it. Unfortunately by that point, my empire was already just below the domination limit, so I couldn't risk capturing any more land when I was going for space!

WastinTime, Challenger, Goal: fastest cultural victory. Result: 1380AD cultural victory.

I'm pretty happy with this result after my seemingly lackluster start here.

Any questions? :mischief:

Spoiler :
seriously, I'll post some details and comparisons using some of jesusin's standard metrics.

The strategy was so far from any of my past quick/Deity culture games that I can't compare to those.

Nice date!! Did you use espionage or the traditional method for attaining culture? I'm interested to hear how your stats compare to Jesusin's at various milestones in the game... :mischief:

No espionage. I hesitate to call it 'traditional' since it was quite far from my traditions, but ya, it's a valid culture victory.

1860AD space victory (turn 300). So I *just* beat TalladegaKnight but have I beaten DynamicSpirit? I had a completely different strategy to their warring...

I concentrated a lot on wonders and teching early on, as a consequence I was stuck with around 6 cities. However the locals wern't exactly teching well, and it didn't take much to build up axes & catapults and bash the Germans. I took up to Berlin which left me at 12 cities. They wouldn't capitulate but my forces were spent, and I had what I wanted which was more land, and it was free of cultural pressure too which wouldn't have been the case with the German's last 4 cities. The Germans peace-vassaled to the Indians, though later in the game they switched allegiance to me, which was nice.

The diplo situation was simple - myself, the Germans, Indians and Babylonians were one religion, and the others were another. Lots of angry rhetoric was exchanged, but other than a French -Indian war not long after my war with the Germans was over, there was no conflict. That war ended with no gains for either side.

From the moment Oxford Uni was built, my slider sat at 100% science for the entire game. This was due to a combination of building wealth, cheap courthouses everywhere, industrial-powered failgold and gold-generating specialists. As the game wore on, more and more of my cities switched from building wealth to building research as the gold wasn't needed. I still had 1613 gold left at the end of the game...

My capital built 17 world wonders, plus the National Epic and Oxford Uni. My other cities built 4 more world wonders (3 of which gave great artist points - didn't want them polluting my capital). I used the great artist from Music for a golden age, used 2 more great people for a golden age near the end, used 1 great scientist to part-bulb education and settled the other 21 great people :D

I would say the unique building (Mall) was unexpectedly helpful this game, as it gave an extra +3 :) in all my cities, which helped me not have to divert commerce to culture and meant I could stay in Caste System. I also popped silver in one of my mines.

And finally a composite screenshot of my wonders, science output, settled specialists etc.

Space loss to Saladin 1966AD.

What is up with the lack of oil on the map? Was this edited by the mapmaker or a freaky result? Of course I didn't realize there wasn't any oil, so going for tanks was a complete waste. If there had been oil, Saladin would have paid dearly for his treachery, instead of my having to rush to get Mech Inf to stop him.

Similarly did I miss something in the game announcement about the hidden kingdom of Aquaman in the center of the donut? I haven't seen anyone really reference it in their posts. With Sid's was it a powerhouse? Justinian was the one in my game who settled it.

I had Gandhi and Fred as vassals and had forgotten how worthless vassals are in BTS. This is an aspect that needs correcting. I should have just continued taking their cities until they were gone. Hammurabi was dealt with early.

I was number one in score, owned approx. one third of the map, and was going to vassal Degaulle and then Justinian. 90% of my army ~80 units was on the border preparing for the assault when Saladin who was at a +8 to +12 DOWs on me. Both Saladin and Justinian are ahead of me in tech and headed for space. Saladin took one city which was slowly being culturally absorbed and another nearby. It became a virtual standstill after that and he eventually settled for peace returning the better city and all his gold. I rebuilt my army to prepare once again for a quick capitulation of Degaulle then Justinian, when he attacks. I take one of his former barb cities SW of my territory but it is difficult to get to him as Saladin has closed borders and Justy is paying cat and mouse with his troops. At that point Saladin launches and I DOW on him to see if he might be weak enough to take out before his spaceship reaches AC. It is not to be and I go down to defeat.

1860AD space victory (turn 300). So I *just* beat TalladegaKnight but have I beaten DynamicSpirit?

I'm afraid not. I've just re-checked my victory date, which I lazily described as mid 1800's in my write-up. It was 1850AD. Very close though.

I mentioned it but only briefly, in a rather dismissive way.

Of course he hadn't, he'd put islands in the middle of the donut with lots of fish and no happiness

I personally couldn't see any use for settling there: Their only use would hypothetically be for food to bump up score. However, since getting the food required workboats and there was no production available with which to build the workboats...

after 1AD, I have only 1 religion!
So when I get a GProphet, I bulb Theo. I've never done that. Sadly Christianity is a 'stone' religion, so I plan to build only 3 temples + 1 cath in this religion (later I get stone from DeGaulle, so I quickly put out another 3+1)

I feel like the Theo bulb was a bit of a waste since I see I can conquer a few religions. But, since I did it, I figured I better build:
350 AD : The AP
375 AD : Hagia

While I'm wiping out Hammy, he bulbs Philo. Great! I get 3 religions from his cities AND I get him to give me part of Philo in trade for peace.

I capture a barb city way in the west and it gets a late judaism spread.

780 AD: very late Liberalism/Nationalism (I used to get this in the BC years IIRC) And even tho it's so late, I still choose not to go Free Speech just yet.

940 AD: Finally, since I've finished my missionaries, I choose FreeSpeech, Pacifism

1000 AD:

14 cities, 97 pop, only 7 workers.
6 religions! (I ignore judaism), so 5.
6 cathedrals
I've had 8 GP births plus the free Music artist.
I built 10 world wonders (Taj is coming soon) I captured Stonehenge, but that's meaningless.

The limited happiness resources was deliberate and I was glad to see the different strategies you employed to try and get some happiness, but the lack of oil wasn't deliberate. This is a result of the map script. The only oil that appears in the donut map is if the centre region is jungle (iirc).

The sid sushi islands are an easter egg I like to sometimes put in the BtS games I make.
The best utilisation would probbaly be to workshop every single tile, run lots of specialists and use sids for food. Workshops provide great production to build workboats DS ;)

You mean like popping Gold in capitole's BFC? :mischief:

- Yes, another game that I finish in the same date: exactly in 1.790 AD (I think it’s the third consecutive …). But while I try to understand what exactly I have to do to improve this date , I’m improving the score and the wars :p. But I’m feeling that my games need to be better if I want to win the higher levels !

- During the war with De Gaulle, almost all my forces (Cuirassiers) were at north. So Saladin declared, and I have to send some units to protect the south border :nono:. I was besides Paris, but I had to give up and make peace. It would be just more some turns and I would take the city, and certainly De Gaulle would be my vassal . After that I upgraded them all to Cavalries.

Find anything interesting?

Just for fun I went there (and to see if the score would be improved)!

- I settled four islands cities (the paradise of aquatic resources :crazyeye:) in the middle of the donut ocean . It was a pity that the work boats were so slowly to be built because the lack of hammers. If I could put them inside Galleons and transport them till there it was easier !!! In the end there was about six WorkBoats...

- Wars:
Hammurabi – 1 AD / 800 AD (Capitulation) - I know it was an eternity :blush::aargh:!
Frederick – 1330 / 1420 AD (Capitulation)
Gandhi – 1470 / 1500 (Capitulation)
De Gaulle – 1534 / 1595 AD (made peace)
Saladin declared against me – 1545/ 1615 AD (made peace)
De Gaulle – 1665 / 1665 AD (Capitulation)
Saladin – 1730 / 1785 AD (Capitulation)

-Thanks for one more game! I hope a medium result again :goodjob:
