I do worry with independent's that they will find it hard to stand up to Tory cuts without the backing of a political party.
Lib Dems didn't win a single PCC.
Turny out was so low across the country it wouldn't surprise me if Labour won the next election that they scrap the PCC's anyway. Semms like most people who did vote didn't even want one anyway!
The Cumbrian election was always going to be a weird one as its mostly rural with a city at the very north of the county and a very large town at the very south of county.
The Tory from Carlisle won which is good for me since I live in the large town but bad for the rural types.
A Tory won in my region, too. Labour won on the first preference but with fewer than 50% of the 16.01% votes cast, they counted the second preference, so the Tory won.
It's curious that the Tories thought we the public would be able to handle preference voting in this poorly publicised election, but that we were too thick to handle similar systems back when AV was being put forward.
Looks like the kind of typical well thought-out policy we've come to know and love from the Tories to me.
But in general, on the worth of PCC's:
Prime Minister David Cameron denied the low number of voters meant the role lacked a popular mandate and predicted the public would become more interested when PCCs began their work.
