[BtS] Amra's Modpack v3 for Beyond the Sword

Err... not sure if you can fiddle with boot.ini in Vista. Check the Civ 4 bug report forum, the MAF "solution" thread. It's not so much a solution as it is beating your computer out of shape to fix a memory leak, but it works.

There is no sticky for that topic, and a search returns dozens of contradictory threads on the topic, none of which seem to be titled "maf solution", and few of which dealt with 32bit Vista. Are you talking about the "I Fixed The Maf Error... Here Is How!!" thread at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=224178 ?

Could you give me a pointer?

Yeah that's the one.... somewhere 'round here I posted near enough to the same stuff, but with instructions on how to back your bootstuff up on Vista. I don't use Vista though, was just repeating what I'd found. Should work just fine though, the backup step is only there in the odd chance that things go wrong.

Increasing my swap file size plus using "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072" solved the problem. The executable was already set to support addresses > 2GB, so I didn't need to use Explorer Suite to modify the header attributes.

Ok, I am not sure where to go for help... I just bought the game and expansion because my friends tried Amra's mod pack and liked it. I installed civ 4, patched it to 1.74, installed BTS, patched it 3.13, installed Amra's mod. However, with or without Amra's mod, I find my computer crashes to desktop every time I try to load a mod (any mod). I seem to be able to play BTS just fine. I did get an error when patching Civ 4 to 1.74, but it continued to play, etc.

Where do I look even to figure this out? I'm rather overwhelmed!

First of all you don't need to patch Civ4 to 1.74 before installing BTS. BTS will patch Civ4 for you. This however shouldn't cause a problem. I don't know how did you patch BTS to 3.13. If you did it through the updater within the game then it was reported to fail by many. Try to download the patch manually. It is available from CFC AFAIK and several other sites. Just google for it.

Thanks, I reinstalled again for something to do... and let BTS upgrade to 1.74, I think that went ok. I installed BTS 3.13 also. Still, when I tell it to load a mod, it just goes to the desktop.

I have:

Pent 4 - 3 ghz processor
1 gig ram
Radeon 9800 pro, 128 MB ram
Win XP Pro

The game itself seems to run ok, though I haven't done extensive testing. I'm really bummed, I have a few friends that wanted to start playing Amra's mod and are off playing it without me at this time. I can't even find anyone else (so far) that has had this particular problem. At this rate I'll be reinstalling Windows! :)

(doesn't that fix everything???)

@Carwyn

You definitely don't need to reinstall Windows if BTS itself is working. If you are sure that the 3.13 patch is installed properly then the problem may be that you installed mods incorrectly. The best method to install a mod is to extract the archive it comes within into a temporal folder. The extracted files will have a folder with the exact name of the mod. Make sure this folder includes another named Assets right under it. If you have another folder with the mod's name use it and ignore the one above it. Now move this folder to ..\Beyond the Sword\mods folder. To conclude make sure that the following path is always present mods\ModName\assets.

@erm4gh
I'm glad you got things running. Sorry, I didn't realize you were using Vista.

@carwyn
Perhaps as Kalimakhus suggests, you may just be installing mods incorrectly. It's not the exact same problem as you are having but I did answer someone else about getting my mod to run. In the post, I attached an image that showed correct & incorrect installations, perhaps it could help. Check this post: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=6615388&postcount=30

@Everyone
Sorry, I've been in & out (mostly out) the last couple days but I have been working diligently on Amra Advanced. I just spent the last day going over all the leaderheads & buttons and was able to reduce the uncompressed size of the mod by about 150MB by removing some unnecessary files and resaving the art files in the correct DDS format. Everything looks okay on my computer but let me know if any problems occur with the LHs after I post the modpack.

Speaking of which, I'm going to work on the modpack's documentation tonight, test it some more, then finish a couple small items, then test it some more, and then I will spend Saturday evening wrapping things up in (hopefully) a self installer so that maybe problems like carwyn's won't occur so often. :D

If everything goes smoothly (when does it ever?), I'll upload Amra Advanced on Sunday, US Time - don't confuse me with international date lines. :crazyeye: Chuggi?

Amra -

Thank you, but I have a more severe problem, NO mods will load at all, it just crashes to desktop. I haven't found anyone with the same problem, but there are many many posts I haven't been able to read them all. Otherwise things seem to be fine. I suspect I may have messed up my Windows registry trying to uninstall my messed up patches of 1.74. :) If I don't get my mods to work, I may have to reinstall windows xp - I dread that! Sides, my CD seems to have gone walkabout!! NOoooo!!!

Thanks - even the mods that come with the game don't run though and I double checked my installation of the Amra mod, it was fine. Because of the mess made when I first tried to patch Civ 4 to 1.74, I had to modify my registry to reinstall Civ 4, not impossible I messed up there. Hmmm I did back that up somewhere! Now I have to wonder if I can compare the back up to the registry I'm using now to see if something is missing?

I thought I told you guys not to confuse me with international date lines. :p

Well, if it helps, it is about 12:50am on Sunday here & I just posted the link for Amra Advanced in the first post. Here it is, also:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=2646

Please bear in mind that the Advanced version is a work in progress but I'm happy enough with what I've done so far to release it. Future plans include more techs, units & buildings as well as a 2nd UU & UB for each civ.

Sorry, I didn't get the self installer working. I'll putz around with that in the future, I'm tired now. :sleep:

Congratulations on the release
i have been putting off playing for a couple of weeks for your mod and it is much appreciated.
just wondering if it is possible to turn the mod component that has battles affect culture off in your mod.
i couldn't find any switches in the ini config files but i may just be stupid

and on another note i was having a quick fiddle with your mod and had a bear convert to my side. I am wondering if this is intended and also the werewolf animal unit aswell?
