Thinking the old Russian flag under the Romanovs, which was Green.

You mean this Romanov flag? That's where the yellow comes in, but there's no green, and there never was for Russia. Btw, the coat of arms is also on a red background. And one interpretation of the Russian flag (the current one and the one for the empire) is that the red was for Russia itself (while white is for Belorussia, and blue for Ukraine).

The Russian Army wore green for a long time, such as during the Napoleonic Wars... but I don't know the "history" behind wearing green.

Hmm, well I guess while we're still on the topic, if colors do happen to be an issue (and it's been a while since I played, so I don't remember all the colors currently in use), here's a suggestion:

The civs would have dibs some form of red are:

-Russia
-Japan
-Ottoman Empire
-England
-China
-Poland
-Vietnam
-Byzantine Empire? (as brought up)

Also, imo, there are three really distinct shades of red: light red, red, and dark red (maroon), so that can help as well.

So here's what I'd think:

-Russia: Russia deserves pure red the most, for reasons I've mentioned before.

-Turkey: The Ottomans and Turkey have always been associated with red as well (sometimes green because of the caliphate), and as the Ottoman flag is darker red, a shade of red slightly darker than pure red (as in the Ottoman flag) would work.

-Poland: Poland can have deep dark red.

-China: Yellow. Although red is the color of the Han Chinese (I was wrong before), yellow was the color of the Qing Empire (not a good representation since it was a Manchu dynasty, but still...), also a symbol of the emperor, and is the other color of the Chinese flag.

-Vietnam: Light yellow

-Japan: Pink. To avoid the whole red/white/yellow struggle, pink would be a good color to represent Japan because of their strong national symbolic association with the cherry blossom.

-England: Light red. Red is often associated with England/Britain because of the Redcoats and St. George's Cross. The lighter shade of red also brings it closer to its second main color, white.

Though that kind of leaves white open (the two strongest contenders for that would be England and Japan), but that can be tossed around I guess. if it's possible, Byzantium could be gold then, if it's so important.

Peter I started that trend. He didn't like the garish colors worn by contemporary armies, calling them "dressed up dolls." He also disliked parade-ground formations or soldiers who "play fencing master with their muskets and march as if they were dancing."
He was a very pragmatic man. :D

Austria should have white since that was their classic uniform color.

Austria should be white for sure, and Russia green would be fine too, they spent very little of their history communist. Same for the Chinese, yellow is much better, they also spent a miniscule portion of their history communist. As for England, white or red is fine with me, both are on the flag. Of course red is the color of redcoats (well duh) but if red is in demand, white is fine by me.

Going by a countries Napoleonic-era uniform color- you can't really go wrong with that (if they existed in that time)

I think Russia should be red.Well they might have been communist only for a small time but this was the time when Russia was at its strongest point in history because during the Tsars Russia never really advanced(except Peter I or Catherine) and got often defeated in wars, only the Russian winter and the knowledge of winter combat saved them from Napoleon but during WWI even the winter didn't save Russia. So RED is the colour of the Mother Russia.

Green just doesn't match with Russia. Red extends beyond communism and into the Russian Empire, as Art mentioned.

For China, yellow isn't much better. Like I said, red's not just communism, but the color of the Han people as well, and it is a revered color in the Chinese culture with huge symbolism. The only reason yellow works is because it also has some history and symbolism in China as well, but definitely not because it's a better color for the Chinese than red. So it actually has an alternate color that works when other civs really, really want red.

I totally agree with you, that Red is more than just a communist colour.Actually the chinese pre communist flag was red aswell.

Well, you guys can debate about colors... I have other priorities...

Sweet, it looks like General Matt's finished up the courbet. And wouldn't you know it I just finished up a game as napoleon. Ah well I guess this gives me a reason, at last, to play De Gaulle. Excellent work.

Wolf I got one last question about the Byzantines.Well the question is are the byzantine heavy infantry supposed to look like normal mace man or isn't their model changed yet?

Is that ship a New York-class dreadnought?

That ship is sweet looking but I know nothing of naval history so I have no idea what it is.

Wolf: What are your thoughts on using something like Zervers "Modern Roman Legion" units? I find it a bit odd that Rome just kind of becomes Italy in the modern age (same for alot of different ancient civs)
