BTS Roleplaying Challenge: Brennus

I have one worker on the stone already, which is helpful. I want to get those clams hooked up next, pausing to grab Stonehenge before taking the whole lot. Who knows? Maybe I can get Peter on side with a little trading.

Round Three: 2760BC

First trial of the day was to make sure our settler and wounded scout survived to make it to the city one position.

A quick little promotion for a heal and a boost, to add to the scout's natural bonus against animals and defense boost in the forests, and then end turn.

The combat has begun!

And as you can see, our scout has emerged victorious and has guided our settler to a new settlement spot.

Meanwhile, our other scout is exploring to the north, while we work on a workboat. The Quarry finishes quickly, and once the workboat is produced, we begin work on Stonehenge...

...But not before constructing a Dun, as per our rules. However, there's another development soon:

Yep, we have two neighbours. Our scout bumped into Kublai's land while exploring up north.

For now? Peace. And exploration, so we can gauge Kublai's land.

A turn or two later, our warrior finishes in Vienne. To try to get some land, we immediately begin building a Monument:

And finally, we finish off the Dun and begin on Stonehenge, but bad luck strikes again! Floods wipe out our route to the quarry - and since we have no gold, we can't afford to rebuild it instantly, so we lose the road. We'll have to repair it quickly. At least we didn't lose the quarry as well.

Plans:
  • City 3 could go on the marked forest/plains/hills nw of the copper, right next to Peter's borders. However, this might stretch the economy somewhat, and is a little risky - after all, Peter has established culture, we won't, thus the city might be vulnerable to flipping. However, it would snag us some copper, as well as getting us a fairly decent city location, and possibly a base of operations should Peter turn sour. It would most definitely irritate him, on the other hand, and the war might cost us.
  • Stonehenge will complete soon, sooner if I can hook up the stone again in a couple of turns. That might be our answer to the problems of culture pushing on our third city, with a little luck.
  • We still have a weak military with only two warriors and two scouts between our two cities. Thus far this hasn't proved to be a problem, but we must address the issue quickly to avoid being seen as weak by the AI.
  • The Great Wall: Do we build it, or not? The early Great Spy could be VERY useful to us, especially since we don't have an early religion for the Great Prophet from Stonehenge to benefit in particular. However, the prophet may lightbulb us a religion if we are prudent, and this may prove more valuable. Thoughts?

first thought: peter's city has a lot of culture. it has not only the palace, it's holy, so that's +7 per turn. i don't think you'd flip easily since your city tile would be quite far from his city tile and that's a major factor in flipping. it's also good because once moscow is ours, both cities still have nice crosses *giggle*.

but my thinking is his culture would probably require concentrated effort to earn control of the tiles that are already his while he is still alive. doable, but if you're not going to wipe him out quick, i'm thinking the SH monument might not be enough to fight back. that city may need to make a library/temple/something quick in order to get some land to use, i can't tell from the map if you need the oasis (i assume it's already his from the territory line you've drawn). meantime, you'd do the military buildup in the other cities, and then city 3 can contribute to the military effort once we have culture infrastructure in place.

a picture hint: you can take screenshots without the cloud cover in the way. it's not an ingame option, your Civilization4.ini file has to include the lines

; Allow Camera Flying
AllowFlying = 1

the ; line is just a comment saying what it does, they all have that, you don't really need it. do a "find" for flying, the line may already be in there with "= 0", if so change it, if not just paste it in (i think i had to paste it but never trust me on computer stuff). then in game, you hit alt+ctrl+f and you can zoom out but the clouds don't show up. caution: the camera REALLY flies, and the angles change really fast. it actually makes me quite dizzy, so i adjust the angle to where i want it before i hit alt-ctrl-f and then i don't move the mouse, i just hit printscreen *giggle*. if you hate it don't worry about it, but if you do like it, it can lead to clearer pictures.

Hmm, I'll take a look at that .ini mod, Kmad, thanks for the heads-up.

As for the actual advice, I freely admit it's not the best idea for a city location, but it -does- deny him access to the copper (not much help if he already has some, though), and it gives me a toehold in the mainland.

I suspect he has at least two cities, one a couple of tiles from his capital - his culture isn't symmetrical, which suggests another city is deforming it somewhere. I haven't found a second city yet, though.

I'm heading off to my videogames class for the evening, and CFC is blocked from my college computers, so I'll check in around 8:45pm GMT and update by 10pm. See you then!

oh i wasn't saying it's a bad spot. i was giving advice for how to fight back if we go for it. i do think we can fight back against that culture ;). we just have to think about it and put a little effort into it at first and then we're fine, the infrastructure we build does the work for us after that. we go about our business and we do whatever we plan to with peter :mischief:. and now i see the cows on page 2 that we'll get after our border pop, that aren't on peter's side. cows are good, that city will be useable before we pull ahead in the culture fight. i'd still start the culture fight, but that's me *giggle*.

we would need to connect it to our other cities, looks like that'll be our only copper. once we have sailing i think a road to that river works from city 3 to city 2, as long as no barb cities pop up between which they won't if it's fogbusted. easier to make, and to fogbust/guard from barbs, than an actual land road would be, but of course requires research, bah. and then a road from city 2 to city 1 of course.

If you get stonehenge, I wouldn't worry about your city culture flipping to Peter.

Stonehenge is so cheap and comes so soon that you really have to hustle to get the stone hooked up for it to have any major impact on the construction time.

Since you've made a Dun, you may as well build a few archers to build up your power, and send them to protect your 3 cities.

The decision on building the Great Wall is one of opportunity costs -- what are you giving up in order to build it? Because you got the two bonus settlers, I say go for it. That's more great person points, and either a spy or prophet is useful.

A 20 turn update, and nice and quick since nothing much interesting went on. Plenty frustrating, but nothing interesting. The rest of Kublai's territory was pinned out on the map, and our scout turned his eye northwards. Meanwhile, our settler and newly built archer set off to the copper city spot - only to find themselves blocked by St.Petersburg two tiles away. Rats!

Our settler and archer returned home in low spirits, while I farmed the wheat and began a pasture on the cows. Horses were discovered in our territory, and Iron Working is now being worked upon. Stonehenge was successfully built, as was the Great Wall, and a second worker is being trained in Vienne.
