Bugs1 - The League of Ordinary Gentlemen

Yoshi: Just played a great set of turns
Bede: Up
Bugsy: On Deck
Scout:
Gengis:

Will get it played tonight.

Still playing but here's an update

We have Hoover's and peace with Arabia after taking Mecca. The peace deal wasn't worth much, but it will give us a second silks.

The girls are still scrapping amongst themselves and Cleopatra is at war with Xerxes.

We have all the money (hoovered Joan's treasury with Atomic Theory and Electronics one turn before Hoover finished), are making more and are leading in tech. We need Combustion and MT and Flight to make the Modern Age.

Moved the palace to NY, using Sherman after Hoover's, hoping to get to a pure 100spt. Still need to find four more, though.

I think we're going to have to go :hammer: on X-man just for being a snot.

Could somebody post a decent, recent map of Persia? I have an idea...

Oh, god help us all.:crazyeye:

[edit- I'll post a map after I finish VS1, if noone beats me to it.]

Bede takes the usual peregrination around the cities, towns and villages to find all is in order. Wake up a few workers and set them to railroading and hire a few taxmen in places that are threatenting to riot, then go back to Dottie and order an increase in the entertainment budget and fire the USO elsewhere and put 'em back to work in the fields.

Buy a ticket on our new, to me, railroads and \start paying callson the other Prime Ministers and Presidents.

Rome has 12g and lacks Nationalism and Steam Power but has Medicine. Trade maps for 5g to us.

Germany has only 4g and lacks Electricity, Industrialization and Nationalism.

Persia is at war with Mongols and Spain allied with the Arabs against Mongolia.

Mongols will spend 2g for our map.

Abu is backward and poor and really has nothing to offer for peace. Since the fair Joan is at war with him decide to keep the pressure on. Two reasons: 1) I don't want Joan to get more than a foothold on that island; 2) There is one more takeable mulberry orchard to the south of Damascus.

Medina is held only by a crippled French cavalry unit. If Abu counterattacks and wins the city could be ours.

Call on France reveals she has 9263 in the bank and three techs on us: Communism, Refining, and Replaceable Parts. Sell her the maps for 6g. She's at war with Abu and having another spat with Isabella and Cleopatra. Joan is most attractive, if a little mannish, in her tunic.

Cleopatra has 1026g in her coffers and Communism. Sell her our map for 5g. She looks like A character out of Oklahoma in her bonnet.

Isabella, ah the fair Isabella, is stunning in her Empire gown with that single, oh so elegant string of pearls encircling her swanlike neck. She fixes her piercing gaze, heightened by those eyebrows, on me and says, I have her attention. She has 67g in her treasury and silks for her dressmaker and knows Communism. She gives us 11g for our maps, murmurs "You make me so happy" and bats her eyelashes at me.

Go back to everybody and peddle the maps again for some small change.

Gallop a cav out of Medina to keep an eye on Medina and the plains to the SW. Move pikes and cannon into the hills to provide cover for the approaches to Damascus

France sucks Rome into the spat with Spain and the war with Arabia

Bugs01_1330AD004.jpg

T1 1335
Kufah is now French.
Resistance is over in Damascus, rush the library.
Add native worker to New York and rail the floodplains and work the mined mountains. Shaves a turn off Hoover's Dam.
Isabella is heading her cavalry towards Persia. she's a big girl now and doesn't need our help.
Swap Cleveland to a Galleon and Hyannis to a Frigate.

NSA analysis suggests that France paid 1000g for the alliances with Rome and that Julius spent most of the money upgrading his troops.

Cleopatra is at war with France so no trades are possible with Joan, so I conclude it is safe to offer the doe-eyed lady in the bonnet Atomic theory as she will drain her treasury for it. We get Communism (Police Stations), 236gpt and 1276.

France drops off cavalry and a guerilla at Vittoria.

Medina changes hands twice and France ships in Infantry. Abu loses a bowman to Franch cavalry in the mountains east of Damascus

T2 1340
Start assembling TF Arabia2 with a frigate out of Hyannis and a galleon from Cleveland.
TF Damascus shifts its focus to Mecca and moves cavalry and pikes out on a mission to pillage Abu's horses. An Elite cav kills an Arab longbow on the plain but fails his promotion boards.

Diplomatic and Trade News:
Persia has Refining
Economic News

Spain -47

Send a cavalryman down to watch the battle at Vitoria

This cable arrives from Paris

Bugs01_1330AD004.jpg

Joan has spent 1000g and trashed her reputation!!!

French cavalry take Vitoria

Arab longbow kills exposed cav at Mecca

Persians come calling and wants to trade his WM for Atomic Theory. Tell him to improve the offer and I might consider it. He offers Refining 105g and 10gpt. That's better.

Arabs and Mongols sign a peace treaty

The palace gets a dome. Pay a visit to the Palace to admire the outstanding architectural details:

Bugs01_1330AD009.jpg

France and Spain fight a battle in our lands near Vitoria and the Franch lose a cav and a guerilla, Vitoria remains in French hands, though.

T3 1345
Manuevering at Mecca

Joan has learned Atomic Theory.

Persia has Replaceable Parts and must have peddled Atomic Theory to Joan

Mongols and Persia sign a peace treaty

Spain retakes Vitoria

T4 1350
Not much going on

Joan now has Combustion

Borders expand at Damascus and fireworks are ignited in the largest cities as the fine silks arrive on our shores

T5 1355
Ansar warrior killed at Damascus
Start pillaging at Mecca

Arab Ansar kills a musket outside of Mecca

T6 1360
Positioning for the Battle of Mecca

T7 1365
Battle of Mecca
Cannons roar on the plains and cripple the single musket defending Mecca and reveal a pike.
Defenders of the West open the ball by killing an elite pike. Four cavalry attacks eliminate the other defenders, with one retreat and one unit destroyed. Defenders of the West attack again and kill a crippled Ansar revealing a wounded pike. Cavalry swoop down form Damascus and take the city.

Abu comes to the peace table and the war is settled with a payment of four gold from his treasury.

With Hoover due in 1 and no more French scientific advances, hence no new SGL, take the risk and clean out Joan's treasury for Electronics. Leave Combustion and Replaceable Parts for later. She has been burning cash since the beginning of the round as it is only 50% of what it was.

Isabella gets a gift of steel.

Persia get Electronics for Replaceable Parts plus 35g and 10gpt

Cleo gets a gift of Replaceable Parts,

Spend down the cash rushing Stock Exchanges, Markets, Banks and Universities.

Cleo declares on Persia supported by the fairest of them all, Isabella. Persians start Hoover's.

New York finishes Hoover

T8 1370
If the palace moves to New York it stands a chance of hitting 100spt. Sherman moves to New York and rushes the construction

T9 1375
Most of the workers are now ganged (3 slaves or 2 native) so that rails are done in one and are moving to the SW and SE as the core is pretty well developed.

Trade Radio to Joan for Combustion, 210gpt and 31g.

There is a gold mountain at Annapoiis needing a mine and raiload

T10 1380
Continuing to gang workers and move them SE and SW one railed tile per turn per gang. Now that the grasslands are railed desert irrigation can be mined and some plains tiles can be mined as well. Any food bonus tile needs irrigation and bonus grasslands need mines. There are several mountains in addition to the gold hill at Annapolis that could use mines and rails but I've been avoiding them unitl the plains and grasslands are finished and properly trimmed up.

In my last parting gesture to the ladies make Isabella a gift of Replaceable Parts so she can better fend off her sisters.

Our science rate is still only .91:1 so we can still use universities in towns with the economy to support them. Flight is due in 5 turns at 100% at a cost of 1381gpt. We have six cities at net 50spt+ and one more 46spt so we can build 7 infantry every two turns and New York can build an army in 5. We need two more armies to build the Pentagon.

We are IMHO entering the most challenging part if the game. There is a great deal of econimic management to be done if we are going to get the Starship launched in a tmely fashion. Not to mention keeping the Queens happy with us. Now that Joan has spent most of her treasury (with us) her war-making capacity should be diminished. A gift of cash to the other two might be handy right now so they can upgrade their miltaries to convince Joan to back down, A nifty diplomatic goal would be peace among the sisters and allied against the X-man. This would only increase their dependence on our largesse to keep them technically current, yet still behind us. Take every opportunity to bleed cash from Joan and feed it to the other two.

Our military is woefully inadequate. We have 125 units, 99% of them obsolete. While we research into the Modern Era I would build infantry and airplanes and deploy them in the west. I don't know if it is feasible, but it might make sense to build a forward airbase in France, drop an infantry army there with a fleet of bombers and give some support to any conflicts among the Queens and the other brutes while minmizing our own casualties, A Kosovo solution if you will.

Persia, Germany and the Mongols are really squeezed right now and I anticipate some action from them. Rome and Arabia are no longer in the game.

Now that is the most @#$#@ed up palace I've ever seen!

Nice turns bede, very good trading. Way to share our wealth around.

:rotfl: That is a GREAT palace!

Oklahoma, where Cleo comes sweeping down the plain.
Where the waving wheat can sure smell sweet
when the wind comes right behind the rain.

I'll have to pick up the game in the AM. Great set of turns for the monk from Cape Cod!

I think our palace is magificent. Almost as magnificent as... that reminds me Brother Bede - I noted you were admiring Isabellas... necklace. :p

Nice turns! Editout...

Nice turns! And the palace looks really interesting :)

I agree that we need a military modernization. With so many troops of the girls running around our place i would feel better when we have a modern army. Thankfully we have a bunch of productive cities.

@The League
Should my turn come up again between now and next Friday, please skip

Pre-flight – There is a French named Giza. I think I will try an place some units between Cleo and Joan.

Upgrade two vet knights to cav.

I offer Combustion to Cleo and she says 18gpt, 14G & WM. Sure, my dear.

No other deals are out there.

City check – We have got some seriously happy people.

Max food in NYC in order to grow. We’ll still get Wall Street in 3.

Change Boston to a hospital. Hurry the worker in Damascus.

Change Atlanta to the CIA, since it is only losing one shield to corruption and I don’t think the police station is worth it.

Adjust a total of three citizens out of all out cities. I like following Bede.

IBT – Joan steals one of Isabella’s cities.
X-man wants peace. OK you snot.

1. 1385 AD - Joan sends more units towards Spain. I close the chokepoint.

Demand that Abu remove his dude from Mecca, he mumbles something and moves the longbow.

Send several units towards the Egyptian/French Front.

Get 73G hawking our WM around. Give Isabella Refining so she can stay competitive.

Figuring we’re 14 turns from the Modern Age plus say another seven turns for Fission, that means 21 turns until we could build the UN. Joan would be our competition. Spokane can complete a palace in 15 turns.

IBT – Spain and Rome sign a peace treaty.

Isabella gets her city back.

2. 1390 AD – Start setting up a human wall on the northern side of Egypt.

Hurry a temple in Anchorage and a Library in Poughkeepsie.

Science drops 10%.

Start building some roads in Egypt so we can get to the front quicker.

IBT – Wall Street is built in New York. Very Appropriate.
The Palace gets funkier. I think this pad is going to be a babe magnet. Are we some wild and crazy guys or what!

2. 1395 AD – Spend about 1000G upgrading some units.

IBT – Spain and France sign a peace treaty. Finally some sanity.
Get a ROP with Mongolia to work the front.
3. 1400 AD – The front is crowded. It is hard to get our units in the way.

IBT – Joan pulls Bismark into her spat with Cleo.
Heliopolis barely stands a French assault.

Flight comes in. Mass Production in 5 at 90%.

4. 1405 AD – Spend another 500G or so on upgrades.
There is a human shield in front of Heliopolis.

IBT – Isabella would like us to fight the Persians for her. We gave Xerxes our word in a peace treaty. The dilemmas of a gentleman. We will defend you my dear. It just will not be in an official status.
The CIA is built in Atlanta.

5. 1410 AD – Sell Isabella rubber for her price of 22gpt, 7g & WM.

Complete the human wall on the Egyptian-French front. There are some units south of the wall, but hopefully Cleo can take care of those.

IBT – Cleo kills off some of the French Foreign Legion.

6. 1415 AD – Consolidate the wall. Science down by 10%.

Short rush several universities.

IBT – Major wave of pollution

7. 1420 AD -
IBT – Watch one Egyptian Infantryman hold off five French attacks.
8. 1425 AD - *yawn*

IBT – MP comes in. Motor Transport in 4 @ 100%.
Start Spokane on a UN pre-build.
9. 1430 AD -
10. 1435 AD - *yawn* *stretch*

After Action – I put the human wall north of Giza in hopes that Cleo can recapture that city. The rest of the units south of the wall have just been running interference on the French.

I just been building universities and infantry. Aircraft can start entering the mix.

If we want, we can go to war against X in 12 turns or so.

We need to decide whether we want a diplomatic victory or a Spaceship. Either way we need to build the UN just to keep someone else from calling a vote. If we do call a vote, it will be us against Joan. Isabella and Cleo will vote for us. Abu will definitely not. Temujin, Xerxes, and Bismark can probably be bought.

I guess it is up to whether we would like to impress the ladies with to quote Gengis “Our huge wonder,” or have them bestow kisses our way.

Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/Bugs1_-_1435_AD.zip

Well done. :)

I would vote for the space ship. Otherwise the game will be finished too fast. Also spaceship is IMO more impressive. Lets build the ship and bring the message of the gentlemen way of life to other planets ;)

I want to see Alpha C!!

Me too, and "Got it". I'll play this later today after re-reading Bugs' turnlog.

Pre-flight check

bugs1_ansar.jpg

Quick trip through the diplomacy screens shows that Cleo and Izzy both lack oil. We have one surplus oil, and 1 located 2 tiles west of Denver that isn't hooked up.

Izzy offers us WM+180g+120gpt for Atomic Theory. Since she can't immediately trade it to anyone, I take it. Treasury now at -48gpt. Izzy will definitely play Bede and me against each other if she get half a chance.

Joanie offers us WM+7gpt+770g for wines. That takes her from Annoyed to Polite. /love/ (Note to self - always be nice to Joanie when following Bugsy)

Caesar trades us dyes for Steam Power. What a buffoon.

Upgrade a couple of MDI and a pike for 640g
Upgrade 2 cats to arty for 480

Wake a Cav in Cincinatti to roam around on Egyptian rails and do a little reconnaissance. Nothing unusual is revealed, put him back.

Wake a forted Galleon and move it towards Anchorage for an upgrade.

City Check - hate to change build orders, but Anchorage is 60% corrupt. Change to Court and rush it. Crap, I just noted those workers...they're chopping... back to market

MM citizen in Ocala from irrigated desert to irrigated desert w/ oil.
Short rush 10 turns off Market build in Cincinatti.
MM a citizen in Kansas City to take 3 turns off Aqueduct build
A granary next turn in San Diego? Hmmm... bank is next down on the list, wonder if this was a mis-click... Bank now due in 3.
Chapel Hill has a Hospital due in 3, with 3 unimproved tiles, and 1 railroaded grassland that is not mined... need some worker turns here when that hospital is built...
Short rush the temple in Halle w/ a worker. Temple in 1 not 2 now.
Short rush a temple in Boston
Cleveland building a commercial dock... has a max of 4 coastal squares it can work, and none are being worked... change to transport for the moment. (Note - C-Docks work differently than "Port of Entry" in GOTM...)

MM a citizen in Poughkeepsie to shave 6 turns off Market build. Still get growth next turn.

New Bedford and Annapolis would be good cities for a commercial dock...

Spot a couple of older units forted outside southend. Seeing no threat, I wake 'em and upgrade 'em.
=====
IBT - French units scoot across our lands...I think my upgrades at southend were /smoke/ moves... sorry Bugsy...

LOTS of fighting in Egypt. Cleo is attacking French infantry in earnest, but is not having much luck. There is a French destroyer in Giza... didn't see a transport. I wonder if I can put together a naval blockade...

WLTKD breaks out in several cities.

Halle Temple>Infantry
Boston Temple>Infantry
Chicago Fighter>Airport (we'll need a place to upgrade fighters...)
=====
Turn 1/1440 AD

I see a French Infantryman and a Guerilla outside Hyannis. That's where the French troops came from... Hmm... lemme see what I can do with that...Organize a small blockade to keep their backs to the Spanish.

Put a fighter in Damascus for Aerial recon work
Work on a rail link between Damascus and Mecca
upgrade a galleon in Mecca, and one in Anchorage, rush the market in Anchorage
Some terrain improvements shave 8 turns off the Police Station build in Mexico City.
work on a little railroading around our Human Wall. Send a guerilla to relieve a cavalry. A conscript infantryman Defends Thebes.

Move some more workers into Egypt for rails.
Upgrade another Galleon in Anchorage
Position some transports in the sea-lane between Anchorage and Damascus

Joanie has taken Veii from the Romans, cutting off our supply of Dyes.
=====
Turn 4/1455
Diplo check
Mongols will trade us Dyes for Electricity... Bismarck is the only one he could trade it to...Bismarck is poor and stupid, and out of this one. We get the dyes +15g from Temujin, then we get another 15g+2gpt from Bismark.
X-man doesn't have coal! /rotfl/ He offers 14gpt+320g. I up the ante to 326+19gpt (His treasury). He's just as furious as he was a turn ago, but now he's broke! :-D

Do some pollution cleanup...
Shuffle some footsoldiers to the wall so I can bring the Cavalry against Abu in a couple of turns...
=====
IBT - Aerial recon indicates that X-man has a stack of Ironclads, and is pummeling Ipezi. Dang.
Cleo captures Giza! /love/ I think Joanie lost at least 2 destroyers when it was taken...

Turn 5/1460 AD

Abu is down Theory of Gravity, Metallurgy, and Magnetism. In one more turn, he's gonna be down a lot more than that!

Other than cleaning up some pollution and shuffling some more units towards Arabia, the only gentlemanly thing I did this turn was help Cleo repair some rails around Giza.
=====
IBT - Joanie shuffles a few destroyers down the Egyptian coast.

Turn 6/1465 AD

Scout is looooong overdue to do something ungentlemanly. Hmmm...wonder what Abu is up to? /muah/

Remember the Alamo...er, um Medina!
Our first air strike against Basra takes 2hp off a vet pike, our second fails.
Our 3rd Vet cav kills a musket in Basra, our 4th repeats the performance
A few Cav later, and Basra is ours.

bugs1_basra.jpg

Start working on the next city. 3 Cav kill a musket, ratio continues through the next musket. No-Doze is the last Cav I have left, and he doesn't let me down. Najran is ours, and it has a market in place.

bugs1_najran.jpg

Get ready to shuffle a few tanks over to Amercian Arabia...
I open a gap in the wall. Hopefully no Egyptian cities can be threatened, but Cleo and Izzy will want to send troops to Germany... might be time to recall the troops along the DMZ, considering the fact that the ladies don't seem to want to DM the Z...

Hmmm...Rome is not looking very healthy these days...it seems someone's been sacking Roman cities...
=====
Turn 7/1470 AD
Upgrade a pike... Do the usual stuff with workers... pollution... I do pull our workers back from Bugsy's wall.
Bomb some Arabs...Defenders of the west take out a couple of Arab muskets like that Army was stacked with Cav instead of Swords..Send a regular Cav agains Khurasan, and the city is ours..

Not much to tell here. Clean up some pollution... send tanks agains Abu. Do a few bombing runs. I've got 4 tanks an an infantry ready to move against his (latest) capitol.

IBT - LOTS of Spanish and Egyptian troop movement towards Germany. I will be surprised if Bismarck holds out 10 more turns.

=====
Turn 9/1480 AD
Something ran out, because we're at -89gpt.
Egypt, down Flight, Mass Prod, Electronics, has 928g
Same for Izzy, but she's broke
Mongols, down SciMeth, Corp, replaceable parts
X-man, down Mass Prod, Radio
Joanie is down Mass Production, has 1803g, and will empty her treasury for Mass Production
Rome (not long for the world) has 10g, down communism, electricity, and Industrialization.
Rome is also down to, well, Rome.

I empty Joanie's treasury, then I empty Cleo's. Now we're at +194gpt
Then I empty X-man's paltry treasury, and gift Mass Production to Izzy. She gives me a peck on the cheek this time.

Our bombing runs in Bagdad reduce 3 muskets to 1hp. And I've got 4 tanks at their doorstep...

First tank kills a musket, promotes, attacks again but fails the promotion board. Next vet tank takes the city without a scratch. Baghdad is ours, and Arabia is a Middle Ages memory.

bugs1_baghdad_gone.jpg

This is funny... we're somehow 2 turns from Fission, and when the queue started we were 9 turns out, and that was 2 or 3 turns into this set... some of those builds are adding up, and I think we're hitting critical mass here...

Turn 10/1485 AD
Ratcheting science down costs us a turn on Fission, so I put it back on 90%.
I put some bombers in Poughkeepsie.
I manage to slip a frigate next to Ipezi, into X-man's favorite bombing spot.
Lots of little worker moves, position our transports to bring some troops home...

Save the game for the next better player...after action review to follow.

After Action Review:

We have beaten everybody to the Modern Era.

We got another Scientific Great Leader. I didn't really need him for anything, so he's just kicking back, smoking his pipe and lecturing miltary academy students in New York. We could use him to rush SETI, Internet, or do the "Age of Discovery" thing.

Next player: Fission is due next turn. Bugsy started a Palace pre-build for UN that's getting close. Be sure to switch this to UN when Fission comes in. Manhattan project might make a good SETI pre-build. New York is producing an obscene amount of shields. Almost 100/turn last time I looked.

Also for the next player - be prepared to be annoyed with a bunch of un-fortified units. I didn't fortify much of what I built on my turns. I didn't have a specific use for all those tanks, but I didn't want to fortify them someplace they'd be forgotten.

At some point in the next 20 turns, we may need to put some cities on wealth. We've got such a productive powerhouse that we might be able to produce a military we can't afford...which is a nice problem to have.
