If you have room I'd like to join! I'm not sure if you are full or not. Ottomans sound good to me. I just finished Epic 29 so I've got recent 5CC experience too!
I'll stay. I'm sorry about the last 10 from me in Eastern Uproar. I was having a very busy week and didn't have time to think over my moves carefully. I hope I'm up to this.
EDIT: I understand your concerns, and if you think that a very difficult ten turns is coming up, feel free to skip me.
I don't like the idea of a large map even if it is 80% water and continents.
I think we should stick with a standard sized pangea map. I think we only want one coastal city because of the lack of shields in coastal cities. A non-pangea map will probably require more than one coastal city.
I am fine either way. I usually don't attempt LArge map games on my own due to the time commitment, but it might be fine for a SG. Whatever you all decide is fine with me!
Standard Pangaea definitely. 80% Water archipelagos are good for avoiding war, but your land tends to be monothematic. Look at Sullla's Epic 18 Game B for an example. According to Sirian, that island used to be ALL desert. We DON'T want to play a 5CC on similar conditions, and we have a better chance of a good start with a Pangaea.
And I don't know whether or not Civ3 has this error included, but Pangaea is spelled with that a there. Just my nit-picky future-author side talking there .
I will update the first post to reflect that. I guess that settles everything. Does anyone want to start a game with these conditions and post a pic? Otherwise, I can do it when I reach home tonight in about 5-6 hours.
I'll do it. Got nothing else to do.
EDIT: Wait a second. What about climate and geology settings? What should they be? Random or Normal? Or will we do something wild and crazy like wet/cold?
Yes. You first, Earp. I will maintain the roster in the first post of this thread always. Once Tsuke puts up a map and a game you are welcome to go ahead and play your turns.
Some thoughts:
This is good. We have growth potential, we're on not one but TWO rivers , we have a LOT of shields capability, and we don't even need to move the settler. The all-mighty RNG has been kind to us . We are in the equatorial zone, so it very might be a cold game, but not a hot one. Wetness seems to be normal - wet. Age is young, going by the mountains. So I think that the settings are either (in order of likelihood):
Normal/Normal/Young
Cold/Normal/Young
Cold/Wet/Young
Go for it Earp !
EDIT (I seem to make a habit of this ):
I can't believe I forgot this. I would advise moving worker onto mountain, just to make sure we're not missing anything better. I hope we're not. And are you going to build a granary in our capital to pump our four settlers out of?
I disagree about moving the worker to the mountain. If we do find something better that way, it will be 3-4 turns walk for our settler (that is if what we see is farther away than what we will see by moving the worker one square to the NE). I propose moving the worker one square to the NE and then deciding. If nothing outstanding shows up (cow or wheat) then plop the settler. If there is something really nice on the other side of the mountain we can grab it with the second settler.
My reasoning is this: I agree you should always move the worker first, to do a little scouting. However, we would lose a full 2 worker turns if we do that, delaying our 1st settler by at least that much even if we keep our capitol where it is. We will see whats right to the East of us anyway without moving the worker to the mountain.
Actually, I guess we would only use up one woker turn. I guess it's kind of a toss up. I do think that anything we see out that way can be grabbed by a second settler.
That's just my opinion. I can understand your reasoning too. I just hate to delay the growth curve at the beginning any more than necessary. Maybe for a 5CC waiting a few turns to settle in an optimum spot would be better.
I'm making a big deal over nothing. Good luck! (P.S. Granary right away is a good idea, but wee will only build 4 settlers, so not as important as a normal game. I still think it's worth it though).
Pangea I am an engineer so I am not a very good speler, but I think it can be spelled with or without an a.
I like the initial spot for our first city. I think I will move the worker to the BG to the NE and then settle on the initial spot. Anyone who hasnt read Crackers Improving Your Opening Play Skills should check it out. Its very informative and has improved my opening play significantly.
The Ottomans start with Masonry and Bronze Working, right? I am not sure if we want to research Pottery initially in order to build a granary. I think we want to research Iron Working and The Wheel to see where the iron and horses are in order to know where to found our cities. We only have to build 4 settlers ever. Does playing a 5CC delay our need for an early granary? I think our research order(all @ min science?) should be Iron Working, The Wheel, and then Pottery.
Normally Pottery is always always first to get the Granary. Granarys are so powerful it's unbelieveable. That power is somewhat diminished in a 5CC, but my vote would be pottery at max science, right now.
I also don't usually go min science for everything - I usually do one or two at least just in case we have no close neighbors. Pottery at max for sure would be my vote.
Earp, how's it going? If you aren't done, just give us a status report and mebbe a teaser image or two .
@ all:
Earp posed some very good points about city placement for resource claiming, so I propose a research plan as follows which should take us through at least 1 rotation:
Pottery @ max
Wheel and IW at just below max/max
This is so we can see the all-important iron and horses. And here's where we have some choices:
Standard beeline to Republic, with maybe a detour to get Lit
OR
Going up the CB and WC->Polytheism->Monarchy (because the AI never goes there right away and we can get some good techs in trade. It worked in LK44)
OR
Beelining for Currency (partially because markets will be key in this game, partially because AI doesn't go that way)
All of the latter three @ min/near min sci.
What say ye all?
I think after the first three techs if we switch to min science we should try to get ones the AI won't research and then trade them. The only problem: On Emperor will we actually get ANYTHING before the AI if we go min sci?
