I've figured this out and it's nothing new. Basically the AI is weighing the effect of civics 'iPopulationgrowthratepercentage' too heavily early on, because it weights it higher when it's current growth is already very slow. In the prehistoric era growth IS very very slow due to low food incomes relative to growth requirements (and also the fact that you ACTUALLY get a lot of your food from hunting which the AI doesn't 'see' in this calculation), so any penalty to 'iPopulationgrowthratepercentage' drags the evalaution of a civic down lots.

Maybe you can program a switch depending on how late in the game you are. The current formula may work if, say you entered the ancient era, or discovered agriculture or after game turn 500 or so.

For the early stage of the game a different formula, e.g. without consideration of 'iPopulationgrowthratepercentage', may work better. The whole strategy may be different, taking in account that you acquire food in a different way.

Just pushed a bunch of queued up changes I had beeen working on in the freeze to SVN:

• Reworked the plot group system (trade networks) to use less memory. Also reduces the size of save games somewhat and (in most circumstances) runs a bit faster
• Modified settler AI to make sure settlers get escorts more promptly, so you shouldn't se them sitting around in AI cities for ages before being used to found in most cases any more
• Tweaked the normalization of AI evaluation of city civic modifiers to city growth rate. Should mean the AI doesn't get 'stuck' on Anarchism for far too long any more
• Auto-fixed incorrect animal AI types on asset load (with a warning assertion in the debug version)
• Fixed a couple of minor assertion failure issue (not major sources of bugs)
• Ported Afforess' recen AND changes over (better AI airforce building, better AI nuke building, couple of end-game CTDs)
• Slightly tweaked the priority of critical unit building in the city AI (will build units for minimal defense and to escort settlers it already has now as higher priority than economic buildings in most cases)

Just pushed to SVN:

• Rebuild that at least appears to cure what looks to have just been a broken build, that was causing the CTDs in the outcome system
• Changes to loading of yield graphic symbols to make it on-demand. This basically means that if you don't turn on the map yield display (so that every tile shows its yield icons) then you won't consume the memory they would otherwsie take (about 35M on a fully revealed gigantic map)

If some people find the dynamic loading of yield icons is too slow for them (it means toggling yield display on and off causes a slight pause) I **may** need to make this behaviour dependent on a runtime switch (global define or something). Please provide feedback on how it behaves for you (and of course bugs)

Works for me for us to use it (in fact I think it's a good idea), but it needs to be a shared decision of the team. Also, before we start adding entries to it it would be a good idea for us to think in advance about what set of categories we want for bugs/feature requests - for example we might want bug categories for UI, AI, crashes&hangs, automations, etc.

When I persuaded the team to take up use of SVN, I wanted to take it one step at a time, because apart from AIAndy (I think, right??) and myself, nobody else on the team is a professional software developer, so their experience with tools of this type was limitted. Now that the source control aspect has sunk in, I'm all for continuing on the same path by adopting a bug tracking system (and no reason not to use the sourceforge one).

So, what do the other contributors think...?

I am fine with the idea. BTW I was a professional software developer, my speciality is the interface between data models and business solutions that are generic, ie can be used by many different parts of the business.
