C3C PBEM : Rise of Rome - scenario-based PBEM

If Rome has its back free from Macedon from the start I think the Carthaginian player needs to be considerably better than the Roman to win that all-important initial battle. This of course implies that both players are fully aware of the scenario beforehand (for instance, I'm playing a couple of other pbem scenarios for the first time, and learning as I go along which means a lot more mistakes - on the other hand I had played RoR before (as Rome) and knew Carthage had to be punched in the face early on or they would be a real pain in the ass). Akots played as Carthage in another pbem and beat Rome using an unorthodox strategy of naval blockade. Looking at the thread, however, it seemed that Rome was making a number of large blunders in that game, so I'm not sure how it would work against a better player. I'm quite certain I couldn't have pulled it off with RJ anyway.

Legions are definitely a major problem in the beginning, but the real problem is Caesar's legion army. That IS unstoppable, the only way to deal with it is war elephants. Until then, I don't have a solution - filling up Hannibal's army with Numidian mercenaries did not work at all :(

It's vital for Carthage to get those elephants as soon as possible - from my recollection it took me much too long, but I don't remember the research path, possibly I could have gotten it sooner through cooperation with Macedon rather than Persia (except in this game they had teamed up with the Romans so that was no use). Persia and I had another problem with research in that Macedon beat me to the Great Library and thus we had to be a little careful about making techs available to Macedon for free..

I would definitely advise on allying with Macedon rather than Persia if the two players are equally skilled since it appears Macedon is more powerful and, more importantly, can be the all-important threat to Rome if their war against Persia is going well.

In my solo game as Carthage I put swords in Hannibals Army ;) , of course
that was not against a human Rome :mischief: . What I hated about this
scenario was playing as Carthage, fighting Rome tooth and nail and
WATCHING 15-20 Macedonian galleys moving all over the map  ,
they never did ANYTHING  , but I was forced to keep them 'at war' , with Rome. Keeping the Celts at war with them was very
important also :D .

I find it amusing that I was the only one who didn't break any treaties or deals ...

Well, officially, Macedon also did not substantially break any deals. We did not have deals with Rome regarding passage of Carthaginian fleet.

And techs which were exchanged as not-tradeable were not traded by Macedon to Carthage but to Egypt and rather late in the game, after 20 turns or so iirc. But Republic... to Persia... this was rude...

Human nature is sneaky, especially it was in 300BC.

Overall, it was a rather honorable game IMO. Compared to other PBEMs.

hey finished reading the rest of this, good game to all, i hope someday in the future when i have conquests i'll run into u guys in a pbem myself ;)
