Sigh, some people just don't read, do they? The problem isn't one, two, ten challenge threads - the problem is that he's wholly opposed to cooperation so that the competitive/non-competitive challenges could be coordinated. Makes the forum look sloppy.

Just because he is the creator of the project does not give him the right to be a jerk to those who wish to express their own creativity. This thread is not interfering in what he does for the community. But the key word here is COMMUNITY.

This thread is not here for bug reports. This thread is not here for suggesting new features. This thread is not here for the intent of trash talking. If you do not care to be a part of this thread, there is nothing forcing you to be a part of it. If the only words you have to give me are those of hostility, don't bother replying. You will not be getting one from me.

I am beyond grateful for the man's work on the project, but this here is ridiculous and just not needed. But, of course, perhaps I should go back to school and learn how to read, correct? Good day to you.

That's fine and dandy, but just because Funak wants to do it his way is no reason to argue over coordination and then proceed to question literacy when things don't go as you wish. He gave his opinion. We understand your opinion, but we disagree. It really is as simple as that. Let the guy do as he pleases. We're not sabotaging you.

Well to try to be constructive, i personnaly prefer this kind of challenge (i'm not a competitiv player, and bad luck i'm not in mood to play mongolian for no particular reason for now) but now i wont do it cuz i have only my old pc and im not able to play civ V on this one !

Well, G, if funak doesn't want to match the civ of the non-competitiv challenge(F's challenge) with the competitive's one (G's Challenge) why not from the next week let F choose the civ for the F's challenge, then you match the same civ + your conditions for the G's challenge ? It's just an idea like this there will be some coherence even if there is not a lot of cooperation...

Or for funak, you mentionned a project of your own, if i may be a little curious, can i ask for more info about it ?

Refusing to coordinate, even if Funak was to choose the civ per week for both challenges (a suggestion I made earlier) is not in the spirit of this community. Allowing someone to 'do as they please' in a manner inconsistent with the open, cooperative, communal nature of this subforum is where I have a problem. I don't care at all what people do, but I do have a problem with people that refuse to cooperate in a community project. If you cannot parse that from my many, many post on this subforum, then I do in fact think that you are making an argument that lacks merit or context in reality.

I also really don't care if you dislike me or my methods. I've managed classrooms for years, managing people that hate me is second nature at this point.

I made the suggestion of cooperation on civ selection earlier, but it was rebuffed. Thus, my vexation.

This is something I don't see mention of here. I could understand your disappointment if, even giving him first choice, he declined. However, I speak from what I know. I believe he declined coordination because HE wants to choose the civ, but if you're giving him that and he's still refusing, my stance is going to take a 180.

I'd also recommend that the civ in this thread match the competitive thread (or vice-versa), as the community is not active enough to support two separate weekly challenges with two different civs.

I remain steadfast in my conviction that there's no reason for the challenges to compete against each other – if using the same civ, we divide it into players that want a scoreboard v. players that just want to play. Fracturing the community for no discernible benefit seems petty.

I don't want to coordinate because I want to in charge of my own project. As soon as I'm not in charge of my own project I get bored of it and I don't like that.

So, this week I've actually played 10 games as the Aztecs on varying difficulties and with different strategies.

First of all, I actually got 3 wins, 2 on emperor and 1 on immortal, worth mentioning that I usually win a lot more than 30% of the games, especially on emperor.

The strategies I manage to finish the game with were Authority into piety into rationalism and Progress into Piety into Commerce.
Most of the other games I just eventually ended up getting completely out-teched and losing out like crazy. One game I got destroyed by a twopronged attack around Steel.

The only successful immortal game I played was one where I completely disregarded both the UA and the UU and just went for a solid Progress opening, translating it into a huge economic advantage later on, the idea was to try and actually make as much use out of the UB as possible by disregarding everything else about the civ, and the result was probably something that could have been done with absolutely any civ. The UB added a few points of extra food in every city, but that was about it, absolutely minimal impact.
In fact the main reason why I won that game was probably more a case of luck in map-generation and AI civs.

Other than this the only real way to make use out of the civ is to go all in for the synergy-timing between your UU and your UA, which is right at the start of the game, when you normally want to secure expansions or build wonders.
You also don't really have the opportunity to scout out your surrounding, you need to a have a weak neighbor located in the jungle/forest to be able to really do anything to him. Starting next to any civ with an early unique unit completely crushes your timing, Pictish warriors, Immortals, Hoplites even war chariots all completely destroy your jaguars. Same goes for any civ with a real combat-based UA like Japan, his warriors and spearmen are more than capable of dealing with your Jaguars.
Even if the stars align and you have a weak neighbor in favorable terrain you're still going to have problems bringing down a garrisoned capital with just Jaguars.

This, I think is the chief design-flaw with the Aztecs, pretty much all other warfare focused civs can stand on their own without their unique units and becomes unstoppable monsters once they actually reach them. The Aztecs needs their unique unit to get any benefit out of their unique ability, which then in turn isn't very powerful at all.


I think the main issue we're seeing here is that the Aztec uniques are just too damn bad. Most uniques in CBO is stronger than they are in vanilla, but when it comes down to the aztecs, most of theirs are actually weaker.

The Unique Ability generating faith and gold instead of culture is kind of a fair transition, although arguably culture generation in vanilla was quite rare so you probably got more out of this ability in vanilla.
Then again it gives you golden ages on peace-deals, so that's an improvement.

The Unique unit is pretty much the same thing, sure a normal warrior have slightly lower CS, but the point of the vanilla Jag wasn't fighting with it, it was keeping it alive to get longswords with all 3 unique jag promotions. In CBO it's both harder to keep the Jags alive, because the AI actually actively flanks and tries killing things off, and Jags also have the weaker upgrade-path of spear-pike. On paper it might look fine but in practice this unit is a lot weaker in CBO.

The unique building was one of the absolutely strongest buildings in all of vanilla, making lakes workable and increasing food in the city by a ton even if you didn't have any lakes. In CBO the building generates considerably less food even if you're settled strategically, and with how science and specialists work that extra food is worth a lot less than it was in vanilla.

The Aztecs weren't even seen as a top-tier civ in vanilla, and considering pretty much all other civs have been heavily buffed in CBO, it's not surprising that the CBO Aztecs are in such a sorry state.




Anyways this is really all I can be bothered writing about the Aztecs at this point, stay tuned for the new civ of the week thats being announced in about 3 hours.
