I think that a new Camel resource would fit into the game very well:
- prereq for Camel Archer UU
- make some desert city locations more interesting
- could replace some current sheep resources
- I'm thinking of +1 health, no building
- more resource variety for arid regions

Animated art exists so that's not a problem. I'm opening this thread mostly to hear your suggestions about where to put Camel resources and where they should replace existing resources. For context, I think this should represent both Bactrian camels and dromedaries, but not American camelid species.

They should exist only in Islamic world mainly Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Mali. But is it necessary to add them? The resource seems to specific.

Sounds like a small little addition that brings more diversity to the game... so sounds fantastic to me.

Consider whether they could bring extra production (labor animals) or commerce (transport) instead of health. Apparently, their main use historically was as carrying animals, helping in agriculture, mining, construction, etc.

Why not make the Camel Archer available to everyone then?
We can do this later, along with a new Arabian UU. Camels are needed first.

I absolutely agree. Arabian UU is the perfect example of being able to do more with less. Because you are Arabs -- it is assumed you have already know a thing or two about Camels. And Oasis suppose to make Desert more interesting, if we add +1 :hummers: to it -- one can assume productivity has increased due to the nearby Camels who still need water once a year.

Resources in a Global Mod should represent Global Commodities, not not local essentials.

... fyi

Based on this map I found on Wikipedia, I propose the following locations:
Spoiler :
W76YTbi.jpg

- A camel replacing the sheep in Morocco, giving the Moors access to camels
- A camel near Timbuktu for Mali
- A camel near Tripolis to make it a more attractive city

Spoiler :
PNLCTIi.jpg

- A camel in Egypt (perhaps another resource should be moved/deleted to not make the land too productive)
- A camel replacing the sheep near Axum
- A camel in the Horn of Africa (maybe there should be even more here, as it holds the largest population of camels according to wikipedia)
- A camel replacing the desert sheep near Mecca
- A camel near Dubai to make it more attractive

Spoiler :

- A camel replacing the sheep in Mesapotamia
- A camel replacing the sheep in Persia

- And maybe a camel spawning later in Western Australia

This way all the civilizations that made military use of camels get access to camels, and some city spots become more viable, while still having camels in historical locations.

Also, I read that camels were mostly used as anti-cavalry units, as their smell disorients the horses. Perhaps if more camel units are added in the future they could get a bonus against cavalry?

Great post iMuffin.

I really like my sheep in Ethiopia, and the land is not too productive over there, so maybe turn one of the cows into sheep or (my personal preference so the ethiopians can still trade superfluous cows) place the camel resource on one of the sqares next (either orthogonally or diagonally) to the trunk-resource.

Maybe one more camel in Transoxania and one on the silk road between Mongolia and Tibet.

If at all the camel could spawn in Australia in the 19th century. But actually I would prefer to not have them spawn in Australia at all. (the population in Australia came into existence after Camels ceased being a resource (they were released upon the application of motorized transportation))

Instead have them in the Nubra valley in India (north of the sheep) (The camels in Australia were imported from Brittish India and Afghanistan)

General feedback on placement. The sheep resource is still superior to the camels resource and the cities with acces to desert sheep rarely excell in production(/commerce). For that reason alone I recommend adding the camel resoure wherever possible in stead of replacing the sheep. It is a shame to have a nice new resource but no attractive spot to exploit them. (poor camels, they should join the trade union)

On what information do you base that camels are superior to sheep?

I like the suggestion of iMuffin, but it seems every sheep resource (except 1 near Mecca) in the Arabian world is replaced by camels. I don't think that is a good idea. I also see the point Force made. A hybrid between both ideas is the best IMO.

I'm asking myself the same question. If it's because I didn't give yields in the OP, that's because I haven't come up with any yet.

Thanks for the map suggestions though, that's exactly what I was thinking of.

Sheep are plentiful in the middle east as well. Though there are a lot of desert spot that are useless now to put camels or other desert resources on, make it so the desert is a little more interesting.

Other very common thing missing is salt b.t.w.

Maybe too common?
