Hey Civ Fanatics:

In a few weeks I'm hosting a big multiplayer Civ game with a few of my friends (between 4-8 players), and I want to make sure everything runs smoothly. To that end, I'm wondering if you can offer any setup advice, especially with respect to these questions:

-How long does an online-speed game take to finish? If we're all friends and most of us are in the same room, is it still worth using the dynamic turn timer or should we skip using the timer altogether?

-How do difficulty settings actually work in multiplayer? What difficulty level do people commonly play on?

-Are there other conventions (like balanced/legendary start locations) that I should consider?

Curious what other people's past Civ LAN party experiences have been like, happy for you to comment below with what works and what doesn't.

No need for the timer if you knew everyone and don’t have to worry about afk

If someone leaves the game for a turn that player will get the ai difficulty bonus for the rest of the game

Have remap condtions set before you start. If someone other then Russia has tundra is a remap or if someone does or does not want coast or desert. Decide on what cross talk and cooperation is allowed.

someone might kill another player right away so you may want to add an ai for them to take over if they want to keep playing or have mercy rule that the must send gold per turn for the rest of the game

4 players is a tiny map and 8 on small is a three to four hour game if played to a victory

Edit: someone is obviously ahead and will win by then
