Can't change custom avatar from mobile

I've been trying to change my avatar and uploading a new custom avatar using my mobile device (it's my only way to get online, sadly), but I keep getting upload failed errors and invalid file errors. I've used both a jpeg and png, and both versions are 100 x 100 and both are under 10 kb, and yet, I still can't upload. I tried both the direct upload and the upload-by-url methods, but still, same errors.

What's going on?

2009 motorola android. MB 300, I think.

As a web developer, I don't support, and can't recommend others to support sub-4.0 version of Android.

Doesn't work for me on an iPad either. Even if the file works when I change it on a computer, it never works on my iPad.

IIRC it's an iPad 2.

The only work around is uploading it to an image hosting site and link that image into your avatar profile.

I said in the OP that I already tried that; that the URL method didn't work.
