:mischief:

though TLK should not take my post as anything, I'm not sending troops nor funds to either Spanish faction. :crazyeye:

I am bewildered by the strange actions of Peru. I also continue to maintain that I have no intention of starting another conflict, and I am willing to sign a treaty formally ending the war, but only if my administration is given a seat at the table that it is written at, and under the accepted condition that merely by negotiating a treaty we are not signing it, and if Vinland attempts to force her will, we will not sign and will defend ourselves.

edit: In other news, I am officially changing my name to Muammar Gaddafi, and shall from now on dress in the most flamboyant method imaginable.

To: the USA (Denver)
From: The Concord (by Peru, with the approval of Japan)

After seeking their confirmation today Japan has just greenlighted for Peru to continue working out the Concord's exact line in the sand for what will invoke the defensive agreement.
We of course agree that the USA is fully in charge of actual treaty negotiations with Washington, and is naturally at the head of the table.
We were and are merely negotiating with Vinland the minimum level of terms Washington must offer to Denver to avoid an invocation of the defensive pact, should the terms be rejected by Denver. It is of course fully up to Denver to negotiate and accept or reject any actual terms whether better or worse, and to call upon the Concord's full defense of its territory in the event that no fair and just proposal is made and an attack is launched. In other words we are guaranteeing a mutual defense of the USA up to where we find a suggested proposal to be fair and just if that proposal (or a proposal better or simply preferable to Denver of course) is subsequently offered by Washington.

I would like to formally announce that I have entered into negotiations with the Second Union to end this war. I still am not signing the Treaty of Detroit as it stands, as it ignores some grave realities that would actually harm the Union should it be signed.

We applaud the United States of Americas decision and wish you the best of results in your negotiations with the Second Union.

Vinland interprets the recent elections in the Second Union to be indicative of support of the present state of the Second Union, given that no candidates from openly separatist parties were elected in what we consider to be quite fair and open elections. Breaking up the reconstituted portions of the nation once again does not seem to be a good recipe for continuing peace, as it leaves each area with irredentist claims, and threatens to leave several small independent regions economically weak and militarily vulnerable, prone to foreign domination and annexation on what may be far less equitable terms.

To: Vinland,
From: The Concord (by Peru, with the approval of Japan)

As neither Denver nor Washington wish for freedom beyond that provided within their democratic frameworks and have opted to start negotiations we must close this discussion for now to wait on further news, as the principal participants come to terms or not. If they do not come to terms the Concord will need to reassess whether the terms offered to Denver were fair and just, and if they are deemed not to be we will defend Denver at their request from any attack.
We ask only that Vinland encourage Washington in the strongest terms to offer the proletarists a mutual cessation of the use of chemical warfare

We trust our merchant marine will remain unmolested throughout this ordeal. Many of its number do business in Spain on both sides.

I'll catch up on what's happening in a bit, but Christos: I played the Pontic Republic briefly (3 turns IIRC) and they hate Russia. It seems a bit of a heel face turn to try and sign a defense pact with them.

OOC: I dont really care about what the Pontians think. I care about the Geo- Political situation in the Area. Russia is a Great Power very near to us, so we need their protection. Also we want to scary the Turks so they wont try to invade Pontus to ''free'' the Turkish Minority.

You should care what the people of your nation think.

ooc: I care. But in matters of Foreign Policy, I dont care. Anyway, I dont think that they will be very angry. Maybe they will protest or something like that, but not something to worry.

To Germany
From the Confederation

You cannot expect us to take your inexplicit threats seriously.

To: The Confederation
From: Germany

Then don't.

OOC: To be fair to Cristos, weren't Occitania and and the Confederation mortal enemies until, what, five years ago? Occitania is probably the most schizophrenic country in the world at this stage; in 16 years, its gone from Spanish to British then back to Spanish and then now its French aligned.

And we laughed at Brandenburg. :p

OOC: Well, the operative factor was that they decided they hated you rather than me sometime a few years before the Great War (which I think is the real anomaly). Once they'd decided that, they were OK with me, but they preferred the British; they asked the British for alliance and the British said no, so they asked me.

OOC: I thought Occitania abandoned Spain because Spain was slowly drifting into cooperation with the Triple Alliance? It was kind of a case of "Well, if these guys aren't going to fight the French, I'll find someone who will." And Britain joined the Krakowians right about then, which was kind of the catalyst for Spanish-Triple Alliance cooperation, so the Occitanians went "Sweet, a new ally."

I can't possibly think of what Spain did to make the Occitanians angry enough to prefer the FBC over Spain. Then again, I had just gotten involved in European politics at the time, so what do I know. :p

Lord Iggy said:
'The Will of the People', carefully 'adjusted' so that the segments of the population who disagree with you are unable to express their democratic will. You are just as much like General Wallace of the Allied Territories of America as he had led us to believe, and our decision to cease recognition of your government is reinforced.

To: Vinland
From: The Empire of Spain

And were the monarchist parties or the Phoenixes allowed to participate in the Republican elections? We doubt it. The only 'democracy' tolerated by the Republicans is one where only traitors to Spain will win.

OOC: Yeah, it was a bit wierd. There were two things that made the Occitanians hate Spain more than the FBC; firstly, Spain neglected Occitania and there were a load of riots against Spanish businesses there; secondly and probably more importantly, Spain invaded Occitania in the Great War, whereas I was extremely careful not to.

OOC: Except that right afterwards, the Occitanians (played by Muurya, I think) came to me and asked for a defensive pact, which I accepted.

It was a deeply confusing time for all of us. :p

Incidentally, I'm thinking of writing a History of the Post-Great War world, to be released after the inevitable second world war :p, tying together the origins of the Transcontinental Alliance and the conclusion of the Italian wars, etc, etc. If there's anything somebody wants me to leave out, please PM me about it.

Ed: Also, I may end up asking some people some questions about stuff that happened 30 years ago in the game, so yeah. Anything I ask will be kept in strictest confidence, however.

OOC: Indeed. :p I think it's all settled down now though.

To be quite honest, I don't precisely think the Second World War is upon us yet, though. No-one's declared war on me.

Yeah, it won't be for a long while. I'm just writing it now in preparation, so I can reveal how brilliant and cunning I was when whoever I'm fighting falls to my mighty wrath.

I feel that gloating is the most important part of victory.

It appears to me the Occitanian people have maintained a relative distrust with both Spain and France, until recently, however the government has been pushed into its various corners by geopolitical happenstance.

I wouldn't say its schizophrenic, its international policy is just forced to play a different kind of game than most nations.

Of course, passing through three different players will have its anomalies.

I feel that gloating is the most important part of victory.

It always seems that way at first. Then you're standing at the top of a burning pile of The Rest of the World and the only thing that comes to mind is "What now?"
