With all the drama going about in the Catholic Church, it makes me wonder if there's any Catholics here on CFC who're considering leaving or have left it, due to having been convinced that the Pope couldn't possibly be Jesus' substitute on Earth?

If there are any Catholics who aren't leaving it, please state why. Also, I'd like you to answer this question: Could the Pope do anything? Is there a line that can be crossed? Is there anything worse than covering up a child rape?

Note: Leaving the Church doesn't necessarily mean leaving Christianity.
Note 2: I'm fine with religion vs atheism debates occurring (those are pretty much inevitable), but try to stay to the topic at hand please. Thanks.

(BTW Mods, I'd appreciate it if you could add another poll option: I have never been Catholic)

Well, considering some personalities who were holding the papal seat through the history...

Given the RCC's stranglehold on education in Ireland I won't formally be leaving in case I need to get potential future kids into a particular school.
I am happy being lapsed.

Some people set up a website to help people leave.

Well, actually I am probably officially a Catholic given that I was baptised in a Catholic Church and had to do some of the religious stuff my mother wanted me to including the what's-its-name ritual which includes confession and the 1st eating of the piece of cracker that supposedly magically turns into Jesus' body (poor Jesus).

Up until recently, I haven't given it much thought - I don't believe in God, so why should I bother whether the Church thinks I do? But as this latest scandal is gaining momentum, I am thinking about visiting "my" priest and asking him to be removed from their list of followers or how they call it. I don't think I want to be even remotely associated with this organization any more. I think I haven't done it already only because of my mother.

I'm not Catholic, but from my experience, most Catholics I know - at least the liberal ones - are more attached to their faith than the actual hierarchy. One person I often talk about history, religion and even some politics with(she's actually quite old), once told me that if the Church ever changed its decrees in a sexist, racist, etc. manner, she probably would leave it. Then again, she's also a VERY firm feminazinist.

So I wouldn't be surprised if many people left the formal Catholic hierarchy, only to still believe in it.

Keep in mind Catholics are also diverse group, because there are people who when I ask why they're Catholic, their "proof" is: "I'm baptised." And I'm all: "... :shake:" There are also the Catholics who get offended when you call them Christians. This quickly turns into a circular logic debate, because I'll say: "So you don't believe in Jesus as the lord and savior?" "No, I do." "So you're Christian?" "No, I'm not." "So you don't believe in Jesus as the lord and savior?" annnnd so on... and eventually, they'll rant on about, "You're not Catholic, so you know nothing about us!!!"

I've noticed Mormons also seem to have this objection to being labeled Christian.

I think that'd be a good question to raise, actually, why some Christian groups hate the label of Christian.

Because their Faith is the One True Faith. The word Christian suggests that there are different denominations, and that they are just one of different, albeit equal, sub-religions.

austria is currently experiencing new heights in church leavings.
such waves usually occur everytime newspapers report a priest to have raped a child here, but this one could well become as big as the whole current scandal.

I left the church many years ago, before the child rape scandals became public. In part because of other things I felt church doctrine were wrong about.

I was baptised but never went to church and I didn't ever believe in God.

I read @Catholics as @Alcoholics.

I became quite confused upon opening the thread.

Whoah, so did I.

Interestingly, the one time I participated in the avatar swap, you took my avatar, and we are the only 2 players in the CivIV HoF to submit a cultural win with Boudica ;)

Never been a catholic.
