Cats and Kittens

I've noticed this online people don't let them out. We generally do after a week or so of bonding. The neighbourhood is a big kitteh cat playground.

Outside the kitchen window. Lots of green, hedges, bushes.
It looks like a cat's paradise. Some of mine would have loved that. But now that I live in an apartment building that's basically surrounded by asphalt and concrete, not many trees, the green space is either on the other side of a fence or is regularly treated with pesticides to kill the dandelions, and the rules that say I'm not allowed to let my cat out anyway (the balcony is allowed, but given that it's located above the outdoor parkade on the sunny side of the building, with no shelter from the sun, rain, or wind and a fall would be fatal)... I keep Maddy indoors. As the years have passed, she's less inclined to try to get outside (out in the hallway is another issue; she doesn't get why I don't let her roam the building), so that's good. I do have perches available so she can look outside from any of the three rooms that have windows.

Yeah apartments never really caught on here. We've got them but it's not somewhere most people want to live long-term.

My suburb I think we have the traditional 1/4 acre section plus garden/trees ideal we have there. We have a plum tree the cats like. More like a plum bush now.

We used to allow Tiger (my orange cat, sadly now deceased) out on the balcony. But Pop-Tart (the black one) isn't allowed out there unsupervised because she keeps trying to jump on the railing and Sassy (black-and-white) just doesn't like it. They sometimes try to run out into the apartment hall when we come home through.

We let ours jump on the railing, they love it and it's convenient height for Pat's and head bops.
They may be spoilt.

Personal bean bag in front of heatpump plus sheepskin mat.

Throw blanket plus computer chair.

There's also a spare queen sized bed that gets the morning sun while her imperial highness will then migrate to her bean bean bag for afternoon sun if warm or heat pump if cold.

Or sunning themselves beside the plum tree with the added bonus of a spot to ambush neighbourhood kittehs or get Pat's from the postie or kids next door.

We have always had indoor/outdoor cats with a cat door so they can come and go as they please. In NC they had acres and acres to roam. In NM they mostly stay in our walled backyard* or hang out in the front to greet visitors and pedestrians.

*6 foot, usually block, walls around yards are the norm in NM city neighborhoods. They don't keep cats penned, but they do keep most dogs from being troublesome.

Years ago we let them out and didn't worry about them. But after a few neighbors bring you a couple found killed, you get a tad more protective.

Those days can be tough. :(

Especially if you have a young daughter. We had a dog that got away from her when she was walking him get hit by a car.

Mines just wants to plop his butt in front of my monitor and watch what I’m doing. Though I have to move him since he gets in the way when I’m trying to play OW or HotS.

Mine just brushes up against my leg and pleads for me to play with her. Quite noisy about it.

I wrap in the middle of the day, when they're in deep coma nap mode.

We've got some cats hanging around our apartment building, my wife and neighbors like to sneak out at night and give them treats.

Most the info in this video is likely known by most, but here goes:

Nice whiskers on that cat.
