CBob04 Achtung Panzer!

Oh, now that is too funny.

We gift the former Iroquois capital to the Vikings.
We gift the former Viking capital to the Iroqouois.

It's a great plan.

:D

Six swords seems a bit light to attack with but only because I forget that those six are the initial six; we'll be making swords for a while.

Tad, are you ready?

hi guys im back... my internet would not work for a whole week.... I just fixed it so im going to catch up on whats happening

Glad you are back! Don't feel that you have to rush in and play your turns. Take your time.

:bump:

Tad, are you still around?

I think Tad has gone missing.

Roster:
TheOverseer714 - just played
Tad Empire_0_o - skipped
ThinkTank - UP!
Cerenkov - on deck
Sasquatch - lurking
CommandoBob - warming up

I'm currently in between computers and won't be able to play civ until the next weekend or so. If you want to skip me that's fine, otherwise you'll have to wait until May 16-ish.

That has to hurt!

Cerenkov are you ready?

EDIT:
Cereknov was last active in March of this year. :(

I might be able to get a Preflight Analysis done by this weekend. Saturday is an Election Day in Tarrant County and I'm an Election Judge. I'll be busy from 6am to 9pm or so; I don't plan on playing Civ on Election Days.

We are kind of hurting for a team right now, with so many can't plays, AWOLs and other things. I wonder should we advertise for a little help to add a team member or 2? This game is going to go a long way, so a big team wouldn't hurt.

I think it is the time of the year; finals, spring fever, getting ready for summer vacation and similar things. Some other SGs I'm in have slowed down, too, so I don't think it just this game.

(It could be me! but I hope not. :D)

In the Post #1 this game is still listed as Open. I've updated the roster a bit, indicating who is lurking and away.

I plan to get a Strategy post together tonight.

Compared to the Despotic Mongols we are average.

Luxuries
03 Wine is connected to Berlin.
01 Spices are connected to Berlin.

Resources
02 Iron are connnected to Berlin.

All cities are connected to Berlin.

Settlers (1)
Our lone settler is 2SE of Munich. It is headed (I think) due South onto a hill and will make a city there in 2 turns.

Workers (13)
The 2 workers NW of Cologne just finished clearing something and revealed a BG. Will mine and road this tile.
Most of the rest are busy working on multi-turn tasks.
One priority would be connecting our new city, but that won't complete until next turnset.

Mid Term Strategy
Build more Swords; kill Iroquois; get more luxuries.
No one (yet) is building The Statue of Zeus. Well, we need the Iroquois Ivory anyway, Zeus or no Zeus.

Short Term Strategy
Gather forces in Hannover; Swords and Catapults.
Try to speed up learning Republic.

Next City Builds
Berlin: setler in 1 -> vSword.
Leipzig: vSword in 3 -> vSword.

No fine tuning to do; just hit Enter.

Bad news; a barbarian appears 1S of our settler, on the hill we wanted to build on.

Berlin settler -> vSword in 5.

1 0530 BC

Worker NE of Hamburg starts mine; finish in 6.
vSword N of Hannover heads east to help our settler.
New Settler in Berlin heads generally south, towards Hannover.
Worker pair 2NW of Cologne start mine; finish in 3.
We move our exposed settler 1N, back across the river.

I check MapStat. For what it is worth, we are the most cultured people on this little island. We have 297 cp, +17 cpt. Iroquois are slightly behind us, with 267 cp and +5 cpt.
Barbarina on our hill attacks a nearby Iroquois Warrior and dies.

Hamburg vSword -> vSword in 8.
Konigsberg catapult -> catapult in 5.
Nuremberg rGalley -> library in 8.

We have 2 Mongol warriors NE and E of Hannover.

New Settler arrives in Frankfurt.
Worker pair SW of Frankfurt irrigate; finish in 2.
Our other settler moves S to the tile he once was in.
The vSword joins him.
Worker pair 2SE of Heidelburg start moving to the grassland 2NW of the city, to irrigate and road. Two turns of walking.
Worker par in the forest 2W of Heidelburg move to S-SE of Berlin and irrigate, planning to bring irrigatiion to Konigsberg.
The rGalley Graf Spee, new in Nuremberg, sails counterclockwise, to remap Mongol cities and see who is on the tundra island to the NW of the Mongols.
Wake the rWarrior in Frankfurt and have him guard the workers outside the city gates, in case the nearby Mongols have any wrong ideas.
New vSword in Hamburg moves to Hannover.

According to MapStat, the Iroqouis have just now connected their 4 Ivory to Salamanca for trading.
[IBT]
MOngols warriors split up trespass even more.
Iroquois warrior moves onto our hill.

Leipzig vSword -> vSword in 4.
Cologne vSword -> vSword in 6.

3 0490 BC

New Sword in Leipzig heads to Hannover.
Moved the worker W of Leipzig S, across the river, by accident. The Leipzig Sword had to cross a river, but I hit the South key twice, which forced this worker's move. My bad.
Worker pair arrive at 2NW of Heidelburg.
New Settler arrives in Hannover.
Settler and Sword just stand on the flood plain, hoping the Iroquois warrior will go away.
New Sword in Cologne heads to Hannover.
Worker S of Nuremberg begins to mine, finish in 6.

Bad News
BC_470_MongolDoWTrimmed.jpg

Mongols DoW us.
We both have 10 cities.
But we will take some early losses, like 4 workers.

Mongols attack Frankfort and lose. They pillage the Iron near Frankfurt. They ignore the 3 workers around Frankfurt.
Mongols capture the 2 workers 2NW of Cologne.

We are 1 of 2 in this war (one victory in two attacks).

Berlin vSword -> vSword in 4.

Palace Expansion.

Looks like the Mongols slaughtered our two workers near Cologne. They don't show up on the map.
The catapult in Hannover moves and misses the Mongol rWarrior on the hill NW of Frankfurt.
The second catapult in Hannover does better.
VSword vs. rWarrior 2/3, vSword wins (2 of 3).

Workers irrigate the Flood Plain S-SW of Frankfurt.
Worker S of Konigsberg makes road, finish in 3.
New Sword in Berlin heads to Cologne.

We build Bremen on the hill S-SW of Munich. Walls in 10, grows in 10.
Worker moves to connect Bremen via Flood Plain.

Now we have War Happiness, so we can boost Science back to 100% and Leipzig will not riot.
Republic drops from 8 to 7 turns.

We had not planned on a war with Mongols.

Hmm.

We can get the Vikings to MA vs. Mongols for 130 gold.
We can get the Iroquois to MA vs. Mongols for Wine and 132 gold OR 272 gold (no Wine).

Seems like a good time for input.

Mongol Forces in Germany, 450 BC
BC_450_CologneArea.jpg

We have only two Mongol units remaining in Germany.

I think we can defend Cologne quite well. The Mongol attack will be in waves of 1 and 2 units. We'll be okay.

Aside from Cologne, we can use this Mongol nuisance to weaken the Vikings and the Iroquois.

The Military Alliance with Scandanavia vs. Mongols looks like a good deal. They are closer than us and have some units in place right now to fight the Mongols. A little bit of gold and we have a buffer zone. I like that.

The MA with Iroquis is more expensive and may not be worth it. It would give us 20 turns to build up our forces before we attack the Iroquois, so that might make it worth while. My concern is about giving the Iroquois gold, they declare war and then their units stay at home. That would not help us any. When we attack, after the MA has expired, we want their cities to have minimal defenders. Ideally, we would then MA with Vikings and Mongols vs. Iroqouis, but we'll have to wait and see on that.

We have plenty of gold, we can afford both MAs if we want them.

Ah! The legendary CommandoBob quintuple post! :)

I cannot look at the save but here are my ideas. I think we should make both alliances (preferably for gpt) but for the Iroquois we tie it to a peace treaty. That will be our insurance for the Iroquois bailing out of this war. We fence off the Mongol attack, send a small stack North to fight the Mongols, but our main focus is building up the force to attack the Iroquois.

I like GPT for MA, especially for the Iroqouis. With the Vikings, I am concerned that the Mongols could block our trade route to Trondheim, which would cancel the MA/gpt deal and ruin our trading reputation.

I'll check on gpt costs later in the day.

With the Iroquois, we make peace part of the deal. When the MA is over, we then must declare war on the Iroquois. Otherwise, we agree to 20 turns of peace. If we attack them during those 20 turns, we ruin our trading reputation. Is this what you are thinking/planning/scheming?

I see it like this:

Possibility 1: the Iros do not make a serious contribution to the war. In this case they will probably get out of the war before the alliance expires. Because it is tied with a peace treaty, we get the war and war happiness since now they declare on us.

Possibility 2: the Iros do make a serious contribution to the war. They will likely still be at war in 20 turns. If we are ready to fight them, we will not renew the alliance after 20 turns, implying war, but their army will be far away. :D

So roughly, we either start the war with the Iros with war happiness or with their forces far away.

We are not able to get a Military Alliance with either Iroquois or Vikings for gold per turn. They get insulted.

We can bargain the Vikings down to 115 gold and that is fine. But offer to pay 20 gpt (400 gold total) and they get upset. Same with Iroquois.

First time I've seen a Lump Sum beat Gold-Per-Turn.

Yet our reputation is clean....weird! Could the AI calculate that the trade route could be broken easily? Or do we require an embassy for gpt deals? Also, are we connected to their capital by road or harbor? What all is necessary for a gpt deal? Anyway, I like ThinkTanks plan of tying the alliance to peace, we will inevitably be at war with the Iroquois at some point, so why not?

I don't see any road that connects us to Salamanca. We do not have a harbor in any city. But Hiawatha still wants Wine as part of the Military Alliance.

Not having a road to either capital would explain the refusal on a gpt deal.

It does not explain Iroquois asking for Wines.

Okay, let's say we agreed to their price on an MA, lump sum gold and Wines. They ask; we agree; and the deal is done. Except that since we are not connected to their capital, once the deal is done it is also broken and we are held responsible.

Not good.

I don't see any way to connect to Trondheim in the next five turns. The Viking terrain has a lot of hills, marshes and jungles; a real ugly start. There is an Iroquois worker NW of Mauch Chunk that is building a road. I'll let the road finish and then talk to Hiawatha about an MA on gpt terms.

Looks like I'll buy the Vikings into an MA this turn and try the Iroquois again in about 3 turns.

I'm going to hold off on playing the next five turns until tomorrow. This is odd enough that I don't want to rush it.

Iron
Even though the Mongols pillaged our Iron near Frankfurt, we have a second source connected due South of Munich. Good thinking, whoever got the road started. :goodjob:
