So here's the skinny: you can pick 1 of 3 options: favored team wins and covers the spread; favored team wins but does not cover the spread; underdog wins outright. You get one point for picking the winner and one point for getting the spread right.
To speak in practical terms: tonight the Browns play the Ravens, and the Ravens are favored by 10
Let's say the Ravens win tonight by 14. The Favored team covers the spread.
If you took Baltimore wins and covers: you get 2 points
If you took Baltimore wins and does not cover: you get 1 point (1 for the winner, but 0 for the spread)
If you took Cleveland wins outright: you get 0 points
If the Ravens win by 7, or 3, or anything less than (but not equal to) 10:
If you took Baltimore wins and covers: you get 1 point
If you took Baltimore wins and does not cover: you get 2 points
If you took Cleveland wins outright: you get 0 points
If Cleveland wins:
If you took Baltimore wins and covers: you get 0 points
If you took Baltimore wins and does not cover: you get 0 points
If you took Cleveland wins outright: you get 2 points
So on the one hand there is benefit to taking the dog, sure, and usually the biggest point swings in this league happen when a bunch of dogs win in a week and somebody picked them all. But that also entails a fair amount of risk. If you're wrong on the dog, even by 1 point, you come away with nothing, whereas picking the favored team you usually have a decent shot at at least coming away with something. It's also worth noting that there are no pushes in this league, so one team being favored by 1 is in essence a straight pick'em. You get 2 points for picking the winner, or 0 for picking the loser, there is no in-between.

Panthers cover. Rest later.
Hey Owen, this is an interesting line:
"Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh by 7.5"
I know it's just the Browns, but that's pretty harsh.

Out of turn...Sorry, that was supposed to be for the New England game. Trying to give Sommer a leg up.![]()
