I'd like to use Steam, but considering that, again, with my crappy Canadian ISP, I can only download 20 gigs per month, I'm fairly limited. Consider yourself lucky if you can use Steam at will. No more "no we don't have that game yet" or "what the hell is Sins of a Solar Empire" when you go at the game store.

On the other hand, the whole concept of tying games to online services, through authentication or I don't know what, sort of scares me. It's just taking us even further away from the good old concept of owning our games. Soon we'll pay monthly fees to play all games. Maybe Steam will end up charging like 50$ per month to play any of their games at will... I'm not sure I find this cool, hehe.

This would be a huge complaint of mine, but I don't think it'll come to pass. There's really no reason for Valve to change the way they do things with Steam right now, and we still own the games. Hell, it's actually easier to use stuff since there's no issue of 'losing the box'; if you uninstall the game for whatever reason, you can just download it again off the Interwebz. My main complaint about Steam involves mod compatibility within Total War games, and the fact that it seems to crash or come near to it with some frequency. Neither of those is a fundamental problem, so they're okay in my book. :)

Is anyone else having trouble getting to their steam homepage and/or CFC's Steam group page?

Edit: Nmd, just saw on their announcements that their servers were down.

Although The Orange Box had to be bought :p

Worth it for Portal alone, regardless of the price. TF2 was a nice bonus though :p

I see, so I guess it wont hurt to buy L4D (along with HL:S) via steam. To be honest, I dont want more boxes stacked around the bookshelf (or the floor). May have to do that.

I've never been keen on paying and downloading games online, but Steam has certainly gone a long way to changing that opinion :)

Not sure where else t put this, but since it has to do with steam and games I'll put it here

Anyone here bought the X-Com games off of steam? I'm thinking of doing it but I want to know how well they run on newer computers, and how much optimizing I would need to do to get them to run well

Steam bundles each X-Com game with a preconfigured DOSBox, making it all but certain that you can run it on a modern machine. At least UFO-EN and TFTD run perfectly fine without DOSBox on XP/2K, anyway. There is no DRM and you are free to edit the game files at your leisure.

I personally run them in the DOSBox, but changed the config file to use the XCOMUtil modded version of the game, and to run in window mode. If you are interested, i can post the config file (even though it is not hard to edit it yourself).

I finally realized that Ironmode isn't actually much harder and mostly just boosts your Audiosurf score. (Having never remembered to check the box at the bottom of the screen...you know how it is.) It's like that Celebrity Jeopardy! category from SNL, "Automatic Points".

I got it for Portal AND Half life...

although now I regret the decision, I was blissfully unaware of the fun in Half life and wasn't waiting fruitlessly for episode 3

I'll be there but the gaming mic's on the fritz, so I'm afraid you'll be denied the luscious velvety texture of my voice.

That server is unbelievably great. It's ridiculous and preposterous. I'm gonna try to play a lot more in the future.

Well that was fun. Hope more and more participate. I was [KAN] Rubrum. If you get scattergunned in the face by a scout, chances are it's me.

As scouts, I hate demomen, am mildly annoyed by pyros, but apart from that, it's not too bad. Demomen just need to click to kill me, pyros too but at least it's avoidable. The hard-coded counter to scouts are engineers, I don't mind them so much, I mean, if I get killed by a sentry it's my own damn fault.
